CABLiTV is a local business that recently launched with the aim of bringing American television channels to the Gulf. A couple of weeks ago they contacted me asking if I would be interested in trying out their service and I agreed. I’ve now been using their service on and off since then and here’s my thoughts on it.
First just a bit of simplified information on how their service works. CABLiTV get a cable and internet subscription in the States, they connect a Slingbox to their cable box and then stream the video feed online. You can then access the video stream in Kuwait and anywhere else in the world via a Slingbox player. It’s not a new service but theyโre the first oneโs I know of that are based in the GCC.
The amount of American channels CABLiTV provides is bewildering. Their smallest package consists of around 210 American channels while their most premium package consists of over 285. There are a whole range of standard channels to choose from like Fox, NBC, ABC, SyFy, etc.. and depending on the package you choose you could also have access to premium channels like HBO and Showtime.
So you’ve got all these channels but how do you view them? Well you can access your channels using your web browser which is probably the easiest but also my least favorite way. You can also access the channels via the Slingbox Player on mobile devices like the iPhone, iPad, Kindle Fire, BlackBerry, Android phones and tablets, Windows Mobile etc.. which is more interesting than the browser but still doesn’t feel natural to me. The best way to access your CABLiTV account is using either a Boxee (pictured below) or a Logitech Revue since both these devices connect directly to your television. That way it feels like you’re watching proper television instead of feeling like you’re streaming a video off of YouTube.
Unlike OSN and ART, you don’t need to install a satellite dish on the roof to get these channels. All you need is an internet connection albeit a pretty fast one depending on the resolution you’re trying to stream. With my 10Mbps WiMD connection at home I sometimes managed to stream in full HD but majority of the times I would watch using the setting “Best” which is the second best setting and provides a pretty sharp picture. The slower the connection the lower the resolution but once you get past the middle setting of “Good” the picture becomes good enough for small screens like the iPhone or Blackberry while looking pretty pixelated on larger screens.
The idea of getting all these American channels to your home here in Kuwait is great but there are two downsides for me. The first which can easily be solved is you need a decent internet connection. The faster the connection the better the video quality you get and the more chance the video will stay stable while you’re downloading other things over the internet. The second issue I have is with the subscription price. Their most affordable package is KD578 a year which comes out to around KD48 a month while their most expensive package goes for KD770 a year which is KD64 a month. I’m sure there are a lot of costs involved in providing this service but it still comes out a lot to the end user and although I would love to have this service it wouldn’t replace my iTunes AppleTV account, nor would it replace my OSN subscription. So in the end I’m still going to pay for those services and then at least another KD48 on top of that for these channels.
Cost aside I do love the idea of this service. If you’re interested to find out more about what they have to offer you can visit the CABLiTV website where they also offer a free trial account. Check them out [Here]

48Kd p/m? That’s ridiculous. I’ll rather stay with OSN. To top it off it sucks up your bandwidth so if you don’t have a very fast connection ,you can’t browse the net and watch tv at the same time.
The reason its priced so ludicrously is because they know that the only people that’ll buy it are the ones that have 10+ MB connections, who can afford it.
Or businesses.
Mark, is that a LG Tv ? because i have the same one ! ๐ weee samepinch… ๐
puff i don’t pay a penny for Tv Shows i watch almost all my shows for Free for eg: Top Gear, i just use a free UK vpn and watch it on BBC iPlayer… and for Simpsons >> Hulu etc etc… i mean common guys ! use your brains and save your money on subscriptions and stuff. ahaa nice idea i think i should post it on my website ๐
Seriously
Pay 50 KD a month to watch TV shows with ads (US TV has LOADS of ads) or pay 0 KD to watch them with no ads
I subscribed to the NFL package (NFL.COM)on the web last year and I get all the games live and replayed forever in 720p HD for $200 a year. That’s the only “live” stuff I care about.
Almost all networks offer live TV on the web (ESPN, FOX..etc.)directly from the States. So, thanks cablitv for the offer, but I think you’re behind the curve on this one, and your prices are way too high.
Not only is it free online, OSN already has same day deals with a lot of shows. Stuff like SNL, Jay Leno and other live shows air the same day in the US, as well as sitcoms and dramas.
It’s also not 50 KD
WHats even more interesting is that you can “Purchase” pay per view movies as well as porn. Service wise it was good but having to pay so much for shows that can be downloaded 15 minutes after its aired just doesnt make sense
But more importantly this is illegal. if they get shut down you lose your money. The paki guy i spoke to at infoconnect said ” We are offering these channels so ofcourse it is not illegal. And even if we get shutdown you can always sue the company”
The 6 hours i spent on this, i couldnt find a single decent movie/tv show to watch. Almost everything was a re-run.
This whole idea sounds ridiculous and I’m sure it must be in violation of Slingbox’s TOS. I’ve been using my Slingbox to get real TV over here for years now. At times the image quality can be a bit less than stellar and it helps to have someone at home on the off chance that the box has to be reset at home but 98% of the time it works just fine. We use ours in conjunction with a TiVo and love it. On this side our TV is connected to a PC so we either watch through the SP software or straight thru the browser – both using the TiVo remote/interface. Even when we moved recently and our new place only had 2MB speed the Slingbox worked just fine. Now that we’re upgrading the speed on the Kuwait side (have fiber back in the States) we’ll probably grab another box this summer so if we ever wanted to watch different shows at the same time we can. Just to give you some idea how incredibly shameless their pricing is my maxed out cable package (all the movie, sports, music, on-demand channels I can stand – nearly 500 or so channels of course some are doubles in HD) rolls out to around 20KD/mo. If you want basic cable it’s 8KD/mo. The TiVo was 85KD so less than 4KD/mo over two years. I bought the lifetime service contract for 85KD – another 4KD/mo over two years. The Slingbox is 70KD so less than 3KD/mo over two years. So if you go with basic cable, then they pay for all of the equipment over ONE year that’s 24KD/mo. After the first year it only costs 8KD/mo – not 48KD/mo. If you’re running a company that has to charge customers twice (or worse SIX times) what your costs are to cover overhead and put some profit in your pocket – you don’t need to be in business.
That’s kinda cool. Quick question though, is there a built in recorder like TiVo or Showbox that records shows when you’re not watching it live. Now that would be cool. This is only because not all shows are available as torrents, so it’d be cool to record something since the time difference is steep – as I’ll be asleep when something I want to watch airs. Thanks.
Yep there is ๐ I checked
I keep reading OSN… It is really ridiculous to compare this service with OSN.
First of all, I checked their website and couldn’t find the answer I was looking for. However it looks to me that this service only take American Cable TV and broadcast it over the internet. It is not a proper TV service like OSN.
This is a huge problem, while with OSN we watch our favorite shows at reasonable hours, the CABLiTV seems like we’re going to struggle with time difference in order for us to catch up with our favorite shows.
Further more, It does not offer on demand shows -as far as I understand- and thats probably because of the above point which is they are only broadcasting the cable tv on the internet.
The price is very high, I doubt they will be able to continue broadcasting for a whole year and they will end up getting shut down for copyright issues.
What I want to see come to our region is services like Hulu and netflix. Until that is here… don’t bother with anything else. Showtime and iTunes are enough.
watching american tv is always great! … having such a service can add a lot to our daily entertainment … the price may always vary but the quality of the service is worthless. I’m in for the service! Alcatraz here I come!
The biggest downside of this is that the timings are in US Time… I tryed once with a California based company which set’s you cable or direct tv antenna in their facilities and stream via internet, yes you will get american channels, but you will have to be awake at 9pm or 10pm (East or West coast time) to watch your favorite show or sport event here… I rather cross my finger and hope one day HBO, Cinemax or any other decent channel is added to the grid of OSN (In middle east timing) if they want to provide a better service…
I think the main factor nobody mentioned is that this is a completely illegal service that will probably get shut down quite soon. The Slingbox has been around for years, but was created f or personal use. There are a million copyright issues to deal with once you try to make it commercial and for profit. Im no saint, and enjoy downloading pirated movies as much as everyone else, but in this case, why fork out all that money for a service that might disappear overnight?
If you’re gonna do something illegal and easy to do, do it yourself ๐
48KD is way too much .. you can find tons of people online offering the service for 40-60$.
This is illegal.
….
yes and will be shut down in couple of months MAX
Place shifting is legal. Check it online
Placeshifting is legal if you own the copyrighted material. IE if you buy a music dvd, download it on ur media device at home and then stream it to your laptop while you’re abroad thats acceptable.
however, if you hook a fox channel broadcast and broadcast it somewhere else and make people pay for them to view the copyrighted materials on fox then this is illegal.
I’m not sure. I mean hotels broadcast cable channels in their rooms to the public. If you look at it like that then these guys are basically doing the same except your room is in a different country and they’re charging you for that service. Maybe they have a commercial license which is why it costs so much? I’m not sure just guessing.
But if its anything like Hulu then you aren’t allowed to broadcast the shows outside the US anyway. If you’re in Kuwait you’re not supposed to watch Hulu or listen to Spotify, Pandora or even download Kindle books from the Amazon US store.
Is there BROAVO TV on this box?
What a freakin’ rip-off!!!
This has been available for YEARS!!! It’s just that our Internet speed couldn’t handle it, and no one had heard of it till now (better connection with providers like WiMD).
Google it and so how much it’s cheaper from the sources, you even get UK TV stations, and full SKY packages.
CABLiTV is a reseller or something and he’s feeding of innocent peoples’ ignorance.
Buyer beware.
;))
Nothing can be compared to the american tv shows. No doubt. But everything is available online for free..but i wish them the best and hopefully succeed
RUBBISH!!!
I’ve had a Slingbox for a really long time, until my port in the States recently burned out. I’m not sure if I would use this service though, considering I can do it without the middle man and avoid paying quite a hefty fee. Then again, I may be fortunate that I have access to a receiver / subscription in the States to hook up my Slingbox with; if I didn’t, then maybe this service would make more sense.
By the way, how is it working for you with our internet speeds / connection quality here?
I have there service it is great and working in HD. I feel like I am in the States reminds me of the time when I studied there. My connection is an 8 with quality net.
Just subscribed the picture is HD crystal clear and I am having direct tv live from the states. If you can’t afford the service, it doesn’t mean the service isn’t great!
