Whats missing at Dean & Deluca?

Justine Orme from Innovative Foods in New Zealand is one of the suppliers for the Dean & Deluca store in Kuwait and he just posted a comment under one of my Dean & Deluca posts. Basically he’s been asked by Dean & Deluca to supply them with more products and he wants to know what you guys think is missing or what you would want to see more of? For example he is already looking for Salami, Venison and other cold cuts in New Zealand to supply to Dean & Deluca along with Brie and a wine substitute to use in cooking like the one served on Emirates. Is there any other gourmet item you are interested in or want but can’t find? Just leave a comment below.

Personally I would like to see Camembert cheese (not prepacked), more choices of black olives, a good premium chocolate spread and some good Turkey salami.

There was this potatoe chip brand I used to buy in the U.S, cant remember the name. But it the chips were fried in OLIVE OIL, sprinkled with rosemary and sea salt. They sold it in Williams and Sanoma. It could be a williams and Sanoma brand…

What im missing from Dean & Deluca?

I want Swiss Cheeses!!!

Ma sarat!!! La Gryure wala Emmental o not even Brie!!!

hmmmm

Some chocolates that are hard to find, like the Kinder Maxi one which has caramel inside and covered with nuts…!

The Strange Cereals u can find aborad in EUROPE and not available in Sultan Center…

More selection of Honey

Extra Selection of Tea and Hot Chocolate. Preferably Swiss ones too

More pasta sauces!

Maybe some newzelandian thingies… like cakes or sweets they are known for? People always look for new habba sweet thingy or Hors Douvres like thingies that they can serve for receptions. I.e. the macaroon habba?

Cowell’s pavlova’s
Salami
Whole manuka smoked chicken breasts (Santa Rosa or Tegal)
Gourmet sausages (pork free better than nothing)
Ostrich fillets
Kapiti ice cream
Clover honey (the creamed stuff, I’m sick of runny honey)
Cadbury chocolate
Pineapple lumps and Jaffas
Uppercut crisps (or even better, Kettle Fries)
White wine vinegar substitute
Poppy seeds
Kato sauces (like the hollandaise, yum)
Kapiti ice cream
Infused olive oils (though I can and do make my own)
Fresh pasta (Why oh why can I only ever get four cheese ravioli instead of beef and sun dried tomato or chicken and basil!!)

we will be eternally grateful if your new zealandan friend can supply us with blue eyed blondes — we have a sever shortage on that particular item here in kuwaiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiit….

cheers

They didnt have spicy salami, no fresh mozzarela that I was aware of, they need more cold cuts in general and more cheeses such as Pecorino cheese.

How about good quality dates, like the ones in Harrods – the large ones, they need more gift ‘baskets’ in general like the stuff in fortnum and mason and harrods. Maybe a gift basket with mozzarela, cold cuts, olive oil, etc.

Props to Randy and his bagel comment, how about they export the Wholly Bagels franchise to Kuwait?? I’d be there daily.

A variety of beef and veal sausages!!!

The last time I was there the *only* sausages they had were turkey. I was really disappointed.

Definitely fresh buffallo mozarella! They have it at Obika which is flown in from Italy every couple of days but it’s outrageously priced!!

>> Newzelandian thingies… like cakes or sweets they are known for?
>> Strange Cereals?
>> More selection of Honey?
PLEEEEEZ!!!

>> Upscale selection of bottled water? PLEEEEEEEEEZ!!!

I’d REALLY like to see a wider selection of chocolates, like Mark said.
Specifically, more varieties of dark chocolate. The one bar of chocolate that I’ve tasted from Dean & Deluca was simply amazing, and I’d love to see more. If possible, 99% dark chocolate, if only to test how it works out in the Kuwaiti market.

Hi All
Thanks so much for your suggestions, many of which we can put forward to Alshaya.
As to the wine – well stay tuned. While we can’t put forward anything with alcohol, Prenzel are working on a wine substitute – the same as the cooking wine, so it tastes like wine but isn’t wine. Sad, but we work within the boundarys we are allowed.
I recognise a Kiwi or two there, and yes I have also thought of Kapiti Ice-Cream, along side which will go Kapiti cheeses. I’m sending a selection of creamed honey up this week for their perusal, and as for L & P, well I never would have thought of that one, but we’ll see what we can do.
Water – yes I have a very nice water ready to send.
REMEMBER – I can only submit this to Alshaya, it is then up to them to choose.
But I will use your comments to strengthen our case.
With the small goods – salami, sausages, jerky etc., that is going to take a while as we have to get it all Halal certified first.
Thanks all
Justine

BAGELS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sourdough Bread

Buckwheat flour

Brewers yeast

+ RAW FOODS!!!! When is WHOLE FOODS coming to kuwait??????????????????????????????? Oh, and, Smart Water! *drool

Justine: I think ‘disappointed’ was referencing Whole Foods Market headquartered in Austin, Texas. I am sorry but WFM would blow D&D outta the water!!

Oh THAT Whole Foods. yes they probably would.

Now you lot have kept me very busy today.
I think Pickled Walnuts will have to come from Australia as I can’t find anyone in NZ making sufficient quantities.
I’ve found some delicious syrups for coffee, Lovely Blackcurrant syrup,
I know where there is really good drinking chocolate, but whether they will package in retail size as opposed to the commercial sizes they currently do …
Cadburys chocolate – how long since you’ve been home Kiwiem? Whitakers are taking over the market. They do a really dark Guana Chocolate – too bitter for me, but very nice.

Thanks for the ideas, keep them coming.
Oh, and Kapiti cheese and ice-cream? Did you know it now belongs to fonterra?

Dear Loody, Salman, Disappointed, Db7, b-relaxed, Ramez, Nobu,

I’m really good and can do lots of things, but I can’t change a whole cultures adversion to alcohol and pig products.

Sorry sorry sorry.

However, other yummy things coming

Justine

Dear Justine

Why dont you go to the sultan center & see what they got?

ALL of the above products are there!!! even the Goose Fat!!

except the pork & Alcohol of course.

Justine Orme: How about pulling a few strings with Alshaya & supplying some of that delicious Epic Pale Ale or a Daniel Le Brun or even a bottle of Milford or Lammerlaw?. As for the food, we can decide later

Justine, I’m ashamed to admit it’s only been four months. But I’d also be stoked to get Whittaker’s in stock- the nut bars though please, I can’t stand dark chocolate.

How about the ready to bake bread? The stuff that’s almost cooked and should be kept in the fridge, then takes 15 minutes in the oven to taste perfectly freshly baked?

Seriously, I think Pav’s would go down a treat here and I’m all for L&P.

Here’s hoping they okay the creamed honey (pleasepleasepleasepleasepleasepleasepleasepleasepleasepleasepleasepleasepleasepleasepleasepleasepleasepleasepleasepleasepleasepleasepleasepleasepleasepleasepleasepleasepleasepleasepleaseplease)

Oh my God, and gourmet pies!! (I’d be happy with a meat pie from BP but I do get that D&D is aimed at the upper end of the market)>

Dear Loyal
I would LOVE to go to the Sultan Centre and see all for myself, and even plan on it later this year, however, there is the little problem of being on the other side of the world, which is why I am asking you to be my eyes.

take care
Justine

well i think they shud have supply of gorgonzola dolce’ !!..they do not have iot anywhere in q8 n i was pretty disappointed the dean & deluca didnt as well!!

100% Organic fresh fruit and veggies (a wider selection), organic raw cocoa powder, cocoa nubs and chocolate powder, almond flour and other white flour substitutes, young coconuts and coconut flour, cold-pressed virgin coconut oil, coconut water, sweeteners like xylitol and stevia; you’ll find a large market for those since diabetes is rampant in Kuwait and those don’t elevate blood sugar.

Justine: there aren’t many places here to get either certified-organic gourmet foodstuffs, or gluten-free foods. There’s a significant number of customers with food allergies [gluten, wheat, lactose] whose needs aren’t being adequately catered to by the local supermarkets.

I think we’d love to see the selection that US and UK supermarkets have for these specialty items.

Oh, I forgot – Dolce de Leche! Haven’t found the good stuff here, I think it would go down well here [sweet stuff always does]

Things with alcohol flavorings (like rum) to be used in cooking and baking. Of course, they are alcohol free.

I have had great feedback, thank you so much.
Now, what is the cafe culture like in the Middle East – coffee with everything.
I have found some fabulous coffee syrups, had one yesterday – hazelnut
comments?

Dutch Salty liquorice (salmiak drop)
Dutch Sweet Sirop waffels (stroopwafels)
Dutch fried meatballs (bitterballen)
Dutch fried meatrolls (kroketten)

I’d like to see :

Aioli
Waterchestnuts
Kiwi cabernet sauvignon, merlot, cabernet franc
and
Oysters domiciled in Bluff

Thanks to Agja for the information on the gluten and diabetic products needed.
All of my products are gluten free and contain no artificials at all.
The sauces are definitley safe for coeliac sufferers, as ar the other 4 items in the store.

To all the rest of you who are contributing to this discussion, rest assured I have been feeding the information to Alshaya for their consideration.

thanks
Justine

UPDATE
some fantastic samples were sent to Alshaya this last week among them gourmet crisps & hand made chocolates.

For those with gluten intolerances I have sourced some gluten free cookies, however have not tested them yet.

thanks for your help, it’s appreciated.
Justine

Dear Mandy

“Gorgonzola Eccellenza” Italian Cheese is available in the Sultan Center!!

its much similar to “Gorgonzola dolce”, trust me 😉

You need to look/ask for it in the Deli section.

BAGELS, real ones, unlike the fake ones we find here in Kuwait. Sesame and puppy seeds ones!!
Ready to cook Strawberry Cheese cake instant glaze.
Provologne cheese.
Coffee Crisp Chocolate.

LouLou
a thought on the strawberry glaze for cheesecake. A couple of chefs here in NZ took our Fruit’n’fire Sensational Strawberry chilli and used that as a glaze on their cheesecakes. Yes, it’s different, but you will really wow your visitors with that.
Now, Bagels, many of you have asked for Bagels.
I would have to say that the Bagels I have had here in NZ aren’t a patch on the ones I had in NYC. But I will dutifully see what I can do.

If the Dean & Deluca fever’s stop raging in Kuwait I should like to see the likes of “The Fresh Market” opening shop now. Will prevent D & D from slackening off, for sure.

Would the Alghanims or the Al Futtaims please stand up now?

Alot of people have problems with grains such as wheat which contains gluten. It would be very nice if Dean & Deluca could bring in:

-almond flour
-coconut flour
-agave nectar
-agar flakes
-Arrowroot powder
-Kudzu
-palm sugar
-stevia
-xylitol
-yacon syrup

I would definatly be a common Dean & Deluca customer if these ingredients were there.
Thank You!
