Who’s on Team Kuwait at the Olympics?

The other day I found out that Kuwait is going to have its first female Olympian swimmer and it got me thinking… who else is on Team Kuwait? Who are the other athletes that are going to be participating next month in the summer Olympics? Does anyone know?

Team USA have an amazing website listing all the sports they’ll be participating in as well as who will be representing them. We don’t have to have anything fancy like that, just a simple list would be enough since right now we don’t even have that. I just got the domain teamkuwait.com and as soon as I have a good amount of names I’m going to start uploading them there but I need your help.

If you have any idea who is going to be participating at the Olympics next month please email me or leave a comment below.

So far this is the list:
Swimming: Faye Sultan
Shooting: Mariam Erzouqi

Update: Thanks to Buz Fairy, this is the full list of Kuwaiti athletes participating in the Olympics next month:

Shooting:
– Fuhaid Al-Daihani in Double Trap (men)
– Abdulla Al-Rashidi in Skeet (men)
– Talal Al-Rashidi in Trap (men)
– Maryam Erzouqi in 10 meter Air Rifle (women)

Track and Field:
– Ali Al-Zankawi in Hammer Throw (men)
– Mohammad Al-Azmi in 800 Meters (men)
– AbdulAziz Al-Mandeel in 110 Meter Hurdles (men)
– Salsabeel Al-Sayyar in 100 meters (women)

Table Tennis:
– Ibrahim Al-Hassan (men)

Swimming:
– Yousef Al-Askari 100 meter freestyle/backstroke (men)
– Fay Al-Hussain in 100 meter freestyle (women)

Final tally is 11 Kuwaiti athletes, 8 men and 3 women.

Update2: Here is an article about Yousef (pictured below) who is currently a high school student in Florida. [Link]

As far as I know, Kuwait is still banned from the Olympics. So I don’t think we would have “Team Kuwait” but she’d be part of the international team (I think they’re called “team olympics”).

Team Kuwait was banned back in 2010 from both the Olympics and FIFA. FIFA unbanned Kuwait, but the Olympic team is still banned.

This international team will also have a Saudi female athlete, since Team Saudi Arabia would not let females on the team. (This was on the radio)

I wish that more Kuwaitis will join..

P.S. Privatization, anyone?

So that’s a total of 11 Kuwaiti athletes, 8 men and 3 women.

The olympic council is kind of messed up anyway. Don’t penalize athletes because of your weird feuds.

You know on the site of the 2012 London games they’re going around and literally putting white tape over logos? Like, going into a bathroom and covering the logos of the tissue dispenser unless they pay for sponsorship.

I don’t think the ban was meant to punish the atheletes, it’s to punish the government for interfeering. It’s just their policy, Ghana was banned after Kuwait for the same allegations; but Ghana’s government has ammended the law in question and now had their ban lifted..

Yes the atheletes are affected by this, but they’re part of a Team that continues to go against IOC policies. And the IOC will not budge, and they shouldn’t. The government has no place in sports.

Fuhaid Al-Daihani is the person who earned Kuwait’s only medal. A bronze medal for Double Trap (men) in Sydney 2000.

Yousef Al-Askari… signed with the Georgia Bulldogs. The only way is the SEC. Great coach, great choice.
There was another Kuwaiti swimmer that signed with the University of Alabama, a few years ago and he also was a high school student from Florida.
Interesting.

There is no Team Kuwait, since the IOC has suspended Kuwait. All Kuwaiti athletes are competing as “Independent Olympic Participants”, and their medals won’t be counted towards Kuwait’s medal total.

so that doesn’t make them Kuwaiti?

Just because they won’t be participating under the Kuwaiti flag doesn’t mean they’re no longer Kuwaitis participating in the Olympics.

Mark, I think like me, he was referring to the title. “Team Kuwait” <– it doesn't exist unfortunately. I wish them luck, but it's sad not having any medals we win (hopefully) counted for "Team Kuwait" (who currently have one bronze medal under their tally)

It's just the title that throws someone a bit off.

Doesn’t matter if officially there is no Team Kuwait, the team is still there and they’re still competing and they’re Kuwaitis so it’s team Kuwait.

I didn’t say anything about not being Kuwaiti, all I said was they aren’t officially recognized as being from Kuwait, they won’t fly the Kuwait flag, any medals that they earn won’t be counted for Kuwait and should they get on the podium, the Kuwaiti national anthem won’t be played.

They are Kuwaiti nationals, sure.

You might as well call them the “Arab Team”.

You’re not make any sense at all. We might as well call them the “Arab Team”? WTF is that? Why can’t we call them Team Kuwait? They’re Kuwaitis and its a team.

But its not. “Team Arab” makes even less sense, but Burhan has another valid point. They don’t OFFICIALLY represent Kuwait. That’s the whole point.. Not if their Kuwaiti or not. Yes they are Kuwaitis representing their country, and good for them; but we cannot call them “Team Kuwait” if the team is not recognized by the IOC. That’s just common sense! I’m actually surprised with you Mark, you’re usually by-the-book. And by the book, our NATIONAL OLYMPIC TEAM does not exist for London 2012. I wish it did; but it doesn’t.. I would love to see the people who have worked hard to represent our country actually represent.

It’s better than nothing I guess; but the pressure should be not on Burhan or Mark or the IOC.. It should be on the political party (National Assembly/Gov’t) who’s responsible for the law.

I’m trying to find a website listing “Team Olympics” or whatever the name is where the Kuwaiti competitors are registered.

The site is kuwaitolympic.com

I wrote “Arab Team” to highlight that giving them a name is just arbitrary. Officially they will be “Olympic Independent Athletes”, and when there are playing it will show the olympic flag.

And that’s why we aren’t allowed to call them Team Kuwait? You can call them team Arab if you want I think I’ll stick to calling them Team Kuwait. They will be representing kuwait in the Olympics even if it’s not official

Well said. Well it is official, they are team kuwait, and the Kuwaiti flag was beautiful in london 😉 long live our Amir, burhan keep quiet and have patience next time

Arabs are the less expected to perform during these Olympics; knowing that most of them will be fasting.
