I know it sounds bad but this is actually great news. If you remember back in 2007 I posted about how Kuwait was ranked the 8th fattest country in the world and actually ranked 1st if you only counted the industrialized nations. Well according to the latest statistics by the World Health Organization, Kuwait now ranks back down in 13th place. That actually means Kuwait’s lost weight!
World’s Fattest Countries
1- Nauru
2- American Samoa
3- Tokelau
4- Tonga
5- Kiribati
6- French Polynesia
7- Saudi Arabia
8- Panama
9- United States of America
10- United Arab Emirates
11- Egypt
12- Bahrain
13- Kuwait
I believe this has to do with the increased awareness on obesity and the fact that people today are more informed on what causes it. Restaurants are also adding more healthy items on their menu and more and more people are on diets recently. Hopefully Kuwait will keep dropping down the list. Speaking of the list, cick here to download the full list [Link]

must be getting less fat due to all the “flirting” goin’ on 😉
There was a huge awareness and activity campaign in 2010…They announced their results…I don’t remember exactly, but I think it was around 65 TONS of weight loss.
Excellent news indeed.
Fatties!
I lost 2 kilo’s last month, so I contributed.
I dropped from 90 to 74 so I contributed 😀
was 138 now 131….
No, wonder being in top.
I see Mcdonalds and KFC Jam Packed Every single day on my way to school.
i gained weight. btw on youtube there’s this guy called The Narcicyst, he talks about arab stereotypes, u shud watch it.
wierd egypt is more fat than kuwait
actually this number makes more sense in a way and not in another..
i think they took in consideration the whole society = (Kuwaitis and non-Kuwaitis) this made a contribution to decrease the ranking (because the non-Kuwaitis who come here are of WORKING age/type not general population), therefore if u take only Kuwaitis, i think it will be ranked more coz u see all the strata of the population and its not biased
in terms of medical statistics only speaking
May be the other nations just got worse? Well I do see awareness.Action? not so much but it isn’t far.
Read about nauri. Its Kuwait’s parallel.
there is huge campaign for hypertension, obesity and diabetes (the most 3 diseases in Kuwait)
thats one way of looking at it .. then again 5 other countries could have gained weight while kuwait remained with the same amount … doesnt mean the weight dropped … it just means other countries got fatter. without a weight average, we will never know.
oh wait nevermind from 74.2% with bmi over 25 to only 28.8% … in 4 years … you go kuwait…
Mark,
Why are you assuming Kuwait dropped weight instead of the other countries at the top gaining wait so kuwait dropped down the list in comparison.
Because when Kuwait was 8th fattest country in the world the BMI% was 74.2 and now its 28.8

wow..the first 5 , are actually countries?!
I googled the first 6 places and they are absoloutly STUNNING !! WOW, the most beautiful islands and sandy beaches I ever seen. People are just chillin there, no wonder the’re a little overweight 🙂
Adam, you mean the first six?
To me that’s still bad considering Kuwait has a little more than 1.5 million actual citizens.
it’s a percentage so it’s all relative.
Its all the poorly paid workers. They barely eat to make a living so that makes the statistic better.
lol…the 6th sounds more like a dish! lool
Something’s fishy here, because I did a thorough research to find the statistics issued by WHO for “prevalence” of obesity in different regions of the world showing the following for year 2010:
Estimated Overweight & Obesity(BMI ≥ 30 kg/m²) Prevalence, Males, Aged 15+, 2010:
Kuwait:
Males: 29.6
Females: 55.2
Please note Obesity = BMI of 30 or greater, as you can see the figures differs from the one shown on the post, also this study was made in 2010, so a more recent study can be more accurate.

Can someone explain how do they actually gather their information?
I don’t trust these stats. 74% to 28% in 4 years is a GIGANTIC jump. I don’t think we ever reached 74% over 25 BMI to begin with.
I don’t think it’s because people here lost weight. It’s probably because fat people here left the country 😛
No, the earlier number (74.2) is measuring everyone that is above normal (Overweight, Pre-Obese and Obese) while the new number (28.8) only measures the Obese category.
Still, it went down from 33.8 (Obese) last year. I’m not so sure how effective the samples are, there’s not much information on what the ratios used in the statistics.
Now that percentage would make far more sense.
Actually… i think its from the new “habba”… Bariatric surgery!
everyone is doing sleeve/bypass nowadays.. Even non-indicated cases. You’d be amazed to see how they brush off the possible complications…
thanks to you Mark for no-more burger reviews, and to Fahad for his healthy-diet blog! 🙂
Doesn’t matter the number of q8 now..
Just keep eating healthy food, have some walk and enough sleep guys…
The fattest will be gone for good from Kuwait..
Is this 2010 or 2011? I am doing a research and Id like a reply ASAP please
This is most likely from 2010 my dear, this year has barely begun.
