Saudi Arabia Last Night

David Guetta performed last night in Saudi after the first Formula E race of the season took place there. How did Saudi Arabia suddenly become more open than Kuwait? If they legalize alcohol in Saudi before us that would be both the funniest and saddest thing at the same time.

No? Saudi isn’t more open than Kuwait. The difference is that there it’s being forced onto them, the majority of people in Saudi are disgusted at what is going on. You saying that Saudi is becoming more open because people are forced to deal with these concerts is like saying that Iran used to be more open because the shah banned hijabs. You have to look at the country on the inside, women still are forced, people still don’t have political rights, being gay is illegal (in Kuwait there isn’t a law that bans being gay but having gay sex as it counts as sex without marriage), shops still close during prayers and being a Saudi Christian could get you into a lot of trouble. Jesus Christ man open your eyes and look past the twinkling lights. concerts aren’t freedom and openness, true democracy, freedom of speech, freedom to worship and love is true openness, the concerts in Saudi is a show piece and nothing more.

I thought you were joking in you first post before Saudi had the “comedian” in the beginning of the year but ever since then you constantly say that “Saudi is becoming more open than Kuwait”. If you say a thing several times then it’s hard to see that as a joke.

Mark was just adding some light fun. You guys need to calm down.

Also, if Kuwait does become a little more progressive(in certain ways) and legalizes alcohol the way Qatar/Oman etc do I don’t see any harm. You always have the choice of not drinking or going to events.

I’d watch that movie, an alcohol apocalypse where all alcohol drinkers around the world die with the only people to survive are the non-drinkers living in Kuwait, Saudi and Iran.

Saudi Arabia is in the faster lane than Kuwait at the moment. So, they cannot catch up on few months everything but if they continue in this manner let’s see in 5-10 years who will be more open Saudi or Kuwait

And some feels it’s sad news, not because KSA became opened like this. but only because Kuwait is so (late)!!
Some are against the virtue and ethics. They call it liberty. “ودت الزانية لو أن النساء كلهن زواني”
” لا يعذب تارك الفضيلة شيئاً أكثر من أن يراها في غيره “

A man who has sex with a man can go to jail for 7 years.

A person who has sex with a member of the opposite, both are above 21, not married to each other and were caught having sex in front of an official can be sentenced to 6 months to 6 years imprisonment.

There is a visible discrepancy in the law. Hetrosexual intercourse and homosexual intercourse are dealt with by different laws, not under a common ‘sex out of marriage’ law.

I’ve been going to Riyadh a lot lately. While the majority are still conservatives, you can’t imagine how open their youth is. They are actually open minded in a scary way and they aren’t even afraid of the laws like they used to.
So yeah SA is changing really.

No one forced any one to go any where. Saudis payed to attend the concert willingfuly. Saudis abroad attend concerts… Most niqabis in London are Kuwaitis from what I’ve seen.

Saudi is a continent. People there are diverse, there’s Najd, Hijaz, The north and the south.. Each has its own traditions. You can’t just say ‘Saudis’ are disgusted with it. Women are forced into what exactly?
There are a lot of gays in Saudi, heck there’s a Starbucks that the gay community go to every week with no harassments.
It’s not like Kuwait has freedom of speech, it doesn’t exist in GCC countries.

It was part of a three day event, other performs were there, as well! Such as Enrique Iglesias, The Black Eyed Peas, Amr Diab and OneRepblic.

Im positive booze is going to be legalized in KSA before it is here for a variety of reasons including the very valuable black market here, and the fact that over there its kind of a one man show when it comes to decisions of that nature….

I’d like to see a big organized poll where all Kuwaitis above the age of 23 are eligible to vote about whether legalizing alcohol is a good idea or not. Same for Saudi and Iran.

Define “openness” please! The openness I am aware of that of mindset and mentality and freedom of speech! The openness exhibited in your post is not related! It’s both superficial and fake!

Openness is not formula to be defined. Only truly democratic society is open. Unfortunately Arab countries are still far away from democratic societies with so many limitations in all aspects of people’s lifes. But, having an totally undemocratic country like KSA having some of the best music artists on stage and people enjoying it is so promising. And you can see they are moving in the right direction, slowly accepting standards of normal living. I doubt somebody without open mindset would attend these concerts. I wish them all the best in the future and think that soon we will witness dramatic changes in this country for good sake of all people living there

Regarding the prohibition of alcohol here in Kw (or any other dry country) The only problem I see with making alcohol legal here is that, because it’s been restricted for so long, people don’t know or understand the concept of moderation, or how to drink safely. If it ever were to be legal, a fuck ton of people are gonna get smashed, wind up in the hospital with alcohol poisoning or die, and drive drunk. I know this post wasn’t about legalizing alcohol, but there’s my 2 cents anyway. Also, dang that concert looks fun.

2cents – Not to blow your bubble but its already happening in Kuwait, people are getting smashed, high, drive drunk etc etc It’s just not talk about and most people like to stick their head in the sand and pretend it don’t exist.

Now lets talk sense, most expats like to drink a glass of wine with their dinner, or have a beer after a hard day of work. This is quality of life for most of us. Why should we not have this quality if we choose to? You ask for halal in our countries, and we gladly provided it for you.

Now UAE, Bahrain, Oman, Qatar all manage this without major problems, are you saying Kuwait is not capable of doing the same? Why? Kuwaitis are different, they don’t know how to withstand temptation?

I don’t understand it and never will, but I hope Kuwait get this freedom of choice, one day.

Yep, I know it’s already happening, but once it becomes MORE accessible, you’re going to see all those people who really have no idea how to drink sensibly. As soon as it hits the shelves, all the idiots who think they can handle their liquor because they drank in Spain or Dubai on holiday, or have bought a 50kd bottle of Black Label, are going to make a mess of things.

I’m American, I’m all for freedom of choice. But my argument is that it’s been prohibited for so long that as soon as it’s not, a bunch of people are going to make terrible decisions impacting the lives of others. This isn’t a religious thing for me.

It’s what I’ve been saying for years! Generations have grown up without it being legal or available and will not know how to handle it

A gradual introduction back into Kuwaiti society is the only way. Start with 5 star hotels, then to expensive liquor licenses given under strict conditions and so on

But alas, that will never happen as long as the alcohol mafia controls the trade and makes millions each week! Anyone who thinks alcohol is prohibited here purely for religious reasons has their head in the sand

Trust me I have seen it all, and it is available you just have to know someone who bothers themselves to get it for you. And yes for doze who says we do not pay tax in Kuwait, think again.

Start with letting the expats bring in a certain QTY from abroad. Quota as we have every where else in the world. At least let them enjoy their favorite beverages, have a good time and you will see happy faces walking around. Not the sad depressed faces you currently have.

I’m really happy for the Saudies! They deserve some fun after all those years of let’s say, not having fun. Hopefully the ones that don’t behave abroad might start behaving somewhat better now. That said, all of this feels tainted (panem et circenses).

I’d normally debate this but I learned people here don’t really like new ideas. So I’ll mention a quote I read a long time ago. Give them bread and circus and they shall not rebel

I wouldn’t call 3 minutes “long ago”… unless you left your comment before mine was actually approved by Mark. Either way, I’d advice you to choose your words very, very carefully.

I didn’t read it here nor did I read the comments either. I read it “long ago” and it’s one of the things I live by which is why i don’t watch sports. I like discussion and not debates because when you discuss something byou are you are trying to find common ground. I thank you for your warning but I stand with what I say. Sudden change is suspicious and not sustainable. Wish the best for all though.
