Air leak onboard Kuwait Airways flight

A Kuwaiti Airways passenger plane used blankets and bed sheets to block an air leak discovered through an emergency door while the jet was en route from Thailand to Kuwait, a newspaper reported on Tuesday.

Passengers began to panic when they saw the pilot and cabin crew hurrying to block the leak caused by erosion of a small part of the door, the Kuwaiti Arabic language daily Alwatan said, citing Kuwaiti Airways sources. [Source]

On the positive side it looks like they might be getting 20 new planes by next year.

That is not a ‘normal’ accident. It is a VERY serious issue. That part can rupture completely and lead to rapid decompression of the cabin. It’s almost like an explosion.

It’s not a serious issue …and there ain’t gonna b any explosion either … if you Hav less knowledge about anything .. that doesn’t give you right to say whatever you can imagine and make ppl afraid … that leakage was from the inner circulation of air condition … not from outside !

Right or wrong, I still have the right to speak my mind about the dangerous state of Kuwait Airways’ aircraft. Who knows when such a disaster may occur? If you still want to fly Kuwait Airways then go ahead. I value my life more than anything. IIRC, a KA plane once had an engine failure while in Saudi airspace. People have the right to know what endangers their lives.

Having worked on Airbus wide-body aircraft, I can tell you with absolute certainty that there are absolutely no air-conditioning ducts even near the R1 door. You have leak in the door surrounds, it is coming from the door seal. Probably a door rigging issue.

Who flies on Kuwait Airways anymore, you? What I read recently is the plane order will be further held up and a MP will be grilled over it.

some of us are forced to.. …KU is the only direct flight to some popular expat home stations…
for those of us with small kids, travelling via Dubai etc could get very cumbersome..

You can maintain planes even if they are 20+ in age , look at Iran Air for e.g..They fly classic beauties all around the world!

This is not by any means an ‘old’ plane if it was maintained properly. Plenty of airlines fly much older aircraft with better maintenance in a perfectly safe manned. Kuwait Airways blames all of their problems on ‘old’ aircraft but that is not really the problem. One big problem is having citizens in the supervisory positions and sitting in the offices who have been to all of the proper courses while they are not willing to ‘waste’ money sending the expats who are actually doing the work and carrying the papers back to the office for the inspection/sign-offs. That ‘inspection’ is generally an ‘inspection’ of only the paperwork. Another problem is the Kuwait DGCA personnel who should be doing the regulatory supervision all came from KAC where they used to do exactly the same things.

That’s not fair! The specific discussion may have been “We don’t need MAINTENANCE because I heard someone is PLANNING to buy new planes.”

I find it really weird that employers of Kuwait Airways are among the highest paid in the country, I mean i would expect something better than this…

They deserve to be among the highest… Can’t you see how many air disasters they were able to avoid throughout the years???!! Shitty airplanes with excellent pilots!!!

I can’t believe people are still flying this junkyard of an airline. Do you people value your lives? It is just a matter of time before a catastrophe happens. Pray you won’t be on THAT flight. You’re tempting fate.

I was working with a subsidiary of Kuwait Airways when they initially started discussing privatization last year. At first the plan seemed to be moving along rather quickly (less than 3 months and they had all the required signatures). We were all prepared to go private the last day of Ramadan 2012 and even had our Kuwaiti employees complete their paperwork (stay for 5 years, retire, or take another government job). I left soon after that but am wondering what happened? Was there a decision made not to go private?

Oh, and part of our benefits package included 90% discount airline tickets anytime/anywhere, and free business class for self and family twice a year (any destination). Unfortunately my fear of Kuwait Airways planes prevented me from ever taking advantage of this perk.

Quit with all the drama folks. Just last month I travelled to Malaysia onboard Kuwait Airways (A340) and the aircraft was COMPLETELY (100%) safe in my opinion.

Yes! I would fly Kuwait Airways again for my future flights since I don’t care about how people talk badly about it. You just got to experience the ride and see for yourself whether really or not it’s safe to fly with them (as I previously mentioned I would fly with them again, as they are a safe airline in my opinion and based on my recent experience.)

Well guys it’s not common but this can happen to any new aircraft as well … nothing serious … that wasn’t the air coming from outside .. just think if that leakage was bringing outside air .. they won’t Hav pressurised cabin and they won’t be able to fly above 7000ft … that leakage was from inner air conditioning system … which circulates from the sides of the plane … hope I cleared some safety issues … thanks
Chaos !

If there is a hint the leak extended to “outside” of the plane, it would have returned/landed immediately.

The integrity of the cabin was not at stake, hence they continued the flight (thailand-kuwait is approx 9 hours flight time)

Nah Mark the air was coming from the walls of the aircraft .. not from outside … the cabin is always pressurized so if there is any leakage .. the air would be sucked out always (decompression)
In this case the air which circulates in the cabin got leakage and start coming through the door … so it was noisy plus cold for the cabin crew to stay on their jump seats .. so they put the blanket to cover that leakage … that’s it

Is there any maintenance in Kuwait. Just go to any government building or a government hospital. Do you trust any maintenance on a Kuwait Airways flight. Who inspects maintenance on Kuwait aircraft? Who signs off on maintenance? Or is it inspected by a guy drinking tea and smoking at his desk. No I do not fly Kuwait Airways only western flagged carriers.

On the positive side Kuwait has the best maintained roads I have driven on. Prepare to go to light speed and pass traffic while driving on the shoulder while drinking a Pepsi in one hand and texting in the other Woo Hoo.

Saudi airlines are way better than Kuwait airlines … but on the bright side .. A300 and A310 wouldn’t b able to fly to Europe from next year so NO matter what Kuwait airways Wil get new aircrafts … 😀

Welcome on board Kuwait Airways, where we try our best (i.e. don’t maintain our planes) to make sure you have a MEMORABLE trip.

Some people seem to be talking out of their arses. Airlines around the world must stick to very rigid maintenance standards, and the engineers for these aircrafts are trained over and over at IATA (look it up) to follow certain checkpoints for ever specific plane. They also circulate around the world to different airports and get the same benefits too.

Simply put, if the plane is flying, then it is IATA certified. Maintenance is not KA’s responsibility. You think fly dubai comes to kuwait with its engineering staff to service their planes?

Sometimes I believe people need to be educated more. Some are talking bullshiatsus
