Calls to revive Kuwait s motorsports racetrack

Kuwait was the first Gulf country to grow a motor racing industry. But it lost out and these days, Bahrain and the UAE host prestigious Formula One races while the last proper track in Kuwait closed a few years ago.

Kuwait actually has a motor racing heritage dating back to 1964 not 74 (like mentioned in the news report) if you consider the Ahmadi karting track. [YouTube]

Lets hope if they do plan on race tracks it’ll be for the different on road and off road cars and bikes.

I remember seeing those karting races during my childhood then poof no more.

Kuwait has to stop reminiscing and start rebuilding. If they build a racetrack now, then it must be on par with neighboring GCC nations. It is no longer acceptable for Kuwait to build a cheap substandard race track that continues to make it look foolish in the Gulf.

this.

i really do find it hard to believe that there is no car track. kuwait probably has the highest ratio of petrol heads in the gulf!

Kuwait is known throughout the Middle East as having some of the best drivers and drag teams not only for cars but motorcycle drag too. Many of our drivers hold countless trophies and are recognized by other countries, like how it says in the video. The saddest thing about it is that all of them do it out of their own pockets. No Kuwait company will sponsor them… due to the truth as to why the original quarter mile was shut down.

It’s commonly said that the Kuwait quarter mile was closed down because of noise or smells, but that’s not the real reason. It was because there was too much fighting going on. One fight even escalated to someone getting murdered at the Kuwait quarter mile club, which is the real reason to why it was shut down. I know eye witnesses who saw a well known individual get shot at the club who subsequently died. The government doesn’t want this to happen again and that’s why they’ve been against it.

And to be honest, do you think if they built a track the hooligans will stop speeding on the streets? The reason why they drive like that is because they know they can get away with it. Nothing will change until the police force strengthens and the wasta system is abolished, but that will never happen.

Another source of corruption/way to steal funds for yet another seemingly beneficial project?

Didn’t the source who was blocking the whole previous project recently pass away? Without a political stumbling block, maybe it will actually go through.

If it is just another opportunity for corruption and political in-fighting, it would only be (once again) detrimental to the guys who truly just want to get out there and RACE/have fun. Get them off the Gulf Road and onto a track.
