Al-Hashim demanded the implementation of her proposal to impose fees on expatriates for using roads “because it is time to apply it” while reiterating the need to collect fees on remittances. “We have to take a fee even on the air that the expatriate breathes,” She added. Source
Sadly, this is not the Onion.

LOL
you went there (uh oh) 😉
Its reasons like these that make Kuwait top the list for worst place to live in for expats
who hurt her?
why did i read this article early morning 🙁
please post sad news after two forty eight PM
I need the government of Kuwait to pay me fees every time I use their pathetic broken roads… my mercedes has suffered enough.
Why should the government of Kuwait pay you anything? You sound to be exactly in the category of this lady
I was just being sarcastic to her comments demanding expats to pay for the roads, I mean are there even any roads left to be paid for?
But your comment is attacking the government, while she herself is a fringe element who makes these comments to get publicity.
Fringe?
She is a member of the government isn’t she? Somehow no repercussions for any of the hateful statements. Almost like the government implying that it agrees with her suggestions.
Yes fringe because even Parliament has fringe elements.. and what lack of ‘repercussions’ does NOT mean the government agrees with her. if that was the case then the whole of Europe and America are the biggest supporters of racism and xenophobia if you care to hear what some of their MPs and even president has to say.
My flossing brings all the Xenophobes to the yard.
I don’t think this woman understands how her country works…
or for that matter how any country works!!
Using this picture of hers instead of the usual pic definitely softens the blow.
http://www.arabtimesonline.com/news/mp-safa-al-hashem-renews-call-to-tax-expats-pockets-tap-remittances/
She just wants the attention, and sadly everyone is giving her exactly what she wants.
Exactly it’s politics just like trump he does this method alot and it’s effective
Maybe Al-Hashim should get more concerned with making Kuwait’s air less polluted before demanding expats paying for breathing it.
Sad is that there are people who listen to this hate filled speeches and consider them normal and rightful.
Even sadder is that the political class and her colleagues are doing absolutely nothing to stop this attitude which comes in clear violation of Kuwait Constitution:
Article 29 [Equality, Human Dignity, Personal Liberty]
(1) All people are equal in human dignity and in public rights and duties before the law, without distinction to race, origin, language, or religion.
Yes +1
Even if it’s just for show, attention, controversy
She should be deported based on her mental state
Hello Mrs. Al Hashim,
Please do let me know where I should deposit my monthly air tax of 0.150 fils ??
Mark, it’s just a show piece and you’ve lived here long enough to know. Parliament is going to pass a several laws in a few weeks which people don’t want (city of silk and the island projects ect), so they talk out their asses to ensure that people wont stop voting for them. Islamist MPs demand to ban wearing pyjamas in public, she demands that expats pay ect. It’s done by the gov to cover up unwanted but needed laws, after these laws are passed the MPs will go crazy with their accusations and irrational law proposals then the political climate will go back to normal.
I didn’t take the article seriously I just found it funny
Hopefully it won’t be long till people can get a decent life up north.
WhY do you mean up north?
Lol… have fun starving then… 😂 bye bye low delivery fees
Lol I’m so petty If I was a talabat delivery person handling her order I will show up to the door holding my breath.😂😂😂
Wasn’t this statement like a year ago?
Is she aware of the poor air quality in Kuwait?
I honestly think expats should be paid extra to live in these hazardous conditions.
https://aqicn.org/city/kuwait/kuwait-city/us-embassy/
For real though, someone should figure this out.
Exactly! If I have to pay for the air I breathe, then she better offer me quality air.
Every time I see this I wonder what Kuwait would be like if there were 0 expats I mean 0! Nada! Zilch! Not even maids or drivers. Is this what she wants?
Some one should do a short film like this. It would be Kuwaits Apocalypse….lol. oh please some one do this, even if just for kicks. They should also make the protagonist look like her and she wakes up all of the sudden with no help for anything. She has to do everything for herself.Imagine it after she finally finishes cooking her own breakfast, cleaning up after herself and doing her own laundry then she has to drive through trash filled streets. I would love to see the look on her face when she pulls up to the gas station the Kuwaiti cashier guy behind the counter tells her she has to pump her own gas. The worst part for her is there will be no foreigners here to wait on her much less kiss her ass Oh and the Kuwaitis will indeed turn on her then because as a parliament member she will be made to answer to the Kuwaiti drivers, construction workers and street cleaners that all feel they are not getting paid enough.lolPlease some one make a film like this.
It already happened and its called the Iraqi Invasion. Kuwaitis removed the garbage, baked the bread, kept the electricity going, delivered supplies to those who needed it, etc. all for free.
YAAAS *Clapping emojis*
Not quite the same thing. While a lot of the foreigners stopped working a lot them also continued working.A lot people still had maids and drivers. Foreigners still worked in the oil refineries and in Hospitals. So No the country was not just releiying on their fellow Kuwaitis A lot of Expats were still working and helping out. As to Kuwaitis cleaning the streets I never said they were filthy animals yes they cleaned their own neighbor hood maybe but there definitely was not enough manpower to clean main streets or anything close to what the Expats do today. The invasion was a sensitive time. The country was under occupation that is not what I am referring to. I am referring to having a regular society where everyone just wakes up one day and every single Expat has left the country. Did you also think about the economical impact that would have. For example that would mean less money going into the hands of wealthy property owners that rely on the rent Expats pay, less money going in to restaurant owners, less money to merchant owners, less money to business owners, less money to auto companies just to name a few.
What a Stupid comment.
so many expats were working during the invasion.
I know an expat arab lady, who used to work in a hospital and used to travel everyday during invasion to work at the hospital.
they took risks so that things could keep moving.
To talk like the expats ran away and left the locals to look after themselves is so stupid and disrespectful towards the expats who stayed back, worked and helped.
There were also locals who took shelters at expats to protect themselves and there were also locals who were the first to take off when invasion began.
stupid comment.
@ashraf
I agree with you 100% it is disrespectful to say that about expats. Some even fought back and defended Kuwaitis What did they get in return? Nothing!
Not to mention every Kuwaiti always says well America helped free us because we paid them. I hate it when they say that .When you look in to the amount paid they still owe billion of dollars and it was not just them that paid other countries chipped in and helped Kuwait pay more then they did. If I’m not mistaking South Korea, Saudi Arabia and I think India and Egypt also helped there were more I have to look it up but they weren’t the only ones. And do any of the citizens of those countries can any special recognition or exception from Safa’s racist remarks? Nope to her if you are in her land and you are not KUWAITI you are a nuisance.God help us.
I mean nowadays most jobs taken my expats is marginal labour which can be replaced by robots and AI. Kuwait can afford to replace marginal labourers with expats. Street cleaners can be replaced by self-driving cleaning cars, maids by robot vacuum cleaners, dishwashers and folding machines, petrol stations would just have card machines right next to the petrol pumps, supermarkets will have self checkout managed by a Kuwaiti, just teach robots to put products with a specific barcode in that specific shelve. Robots are even learning to cook. Kuwaitis will adopt new machinery and save a lot of money, it will require getting used to but the biggest losers would be the expats’ home countries which gets rid of endless jobless people which they would have to deal with. Tbh I think it would usher in a new age of robot machinery, I think your smart comment would have been a nightmare a decade ago but not anymore.
I can easily imagine an article in Arab Times tomorrow with her demanding to replace expats with robots lol
Lol… Mark that would be the sequel to the Kuwaitis Apocalypse film. It would be when the AI Robots themselves decide to take over Kuwait cause they too are tired of doing all the work and no credit call it
I-Robot. (Invasion Robot).
Soon Safa will tax the robots for the electricity their using…
For a country that still uses fax machine, this seems a bit far fetched…
Also, you forgot to add, they would rent out all the vacant apartments left by expats so as not to bring the crisis to kuwaiti real estate market.
This fantasy world you imagine would take Kuwait decades, or even a century, to get there. Just think about what Kuwait is (3rd world shithole) with all the resources that it has. Now you expect Kuwait to do things the rest of the world hasn’t even gotten to yet? LOOOOOL
Seems you haven’t been to very many 3rd world countries
Seems like you haven’t been to very many 1st world countries if you think Kuwait anything but 3rd world.
I hate this argument… “Who would take out their trash”. I see expats make it all the time and you are reducing the role of expats to “People that take out trash”. It’s a silly self defeating argument.
In Saudi they are saudizing all sorts of jobs (Inside most malls it will be almost 100% Saudi salespeople) and yeah, when the local population has to do the job it does turn out that suddenly companies have to pay more, treat their workers better, give more than one day off etc.
At the end of the day who benefits whether the guy taking out the trash is Kuwaiti or Expat? Only the owners of the companies.
MUST carry air from India next time I travel. Times are getting tough!
Am homesick, would you please get some air from my hometown, please?
but I won’t be allowed to breath in your hometown ya know? Sorry, I can’t risk death to bring you air.
When she travels abroad let them treat her the same then? Would she like it?
or for that matter how any country works!!
Whos gonna deliver the food by #Deliveroo #Carriage #Talabat
Oh I just read on top Robots <3
Meanwhile, White Liberals believe countries like Kuwait have it easier/better than in the US! LMAO!!
This is a single member of parliament saying this – in the US Half of their elected officials openly believe the same thing and their president supports white nationalists, so yes
Maybe Al-Hashim should get more concerned with making Kuwait’s air less polluted before demanding expats paying for breathing it.
wat is she smoooking 😂😂
How can we invite her @ Calma_kw for a float?
Sadly, she blocked me on Instagram 🤣
If anyone can pass this to Ms.Safa, please let her know that she has a float on the house for her and 3 more friends.
Regards,
Your favourite wafid
hahhahah
As a Kuwaiti, I am really ashamed that this disgusting rhetoric is coming from a Kuwaiti person. As was said in the earlier comments, she wants attention. The summer holiday is over and she wants to be in the news somehow and have people talk about her. I wouldn’t be surprised if after this story dies down, she would come up with some other crap just to stay in the news.
Dear expats,
I hope you don’t take this seriously. You’re an important part of Kuwait and we love you!
Finally, here is Melody Gardot for you all:

cue song *ana kuwaiti ana ana ana kuwaiti ana
Really you agree with Safa? Please tell me how much of the 90 kd per month some expats make you would like to take from them.
This country is being run by expats though. Indians, Pakistanis, Egyptians are doing most school and technical/mechanical work in shuwaikh and almost everywhere in Kuwait.
I wouldnt mind paying taxes and fees for the roads, but give me good roads first, I wouldnt mind paying health insurance with a high value, but let me see that reflected on the local hospitals services, I wouldnt mind paying money here and there, but let me have money first :p
