Metal detectors to be installed at malls?

Metal detectors may soon be installed at all mall entrances in Kuwait following the fatal stabbing of a man on Thursday.
Minister of Interior Major Raed Buslaib said the ministry had agreed to increase security at malls after residents were shocked by the public killing.
“The ministry is now discussing the security systems in the malls. We agreed that the number of surveillance cameras should be increased and alarms and metal detectors should be installed at mall entrances and maintained regularly,” Buslaib told the Kuwait Times. [Arabian Business]

I hope that’s not going to happen just because based on current security setups around Kuwait at hotels and even at the airport, I don’t think it’s going to be effective since security tends to slack off. Also even if they did stop people bringing knives in from outside the malls they could still buy them once they’re inside.

Kuwait Times also have the full story on this weekends stabbing, turns out it wasn’t over a girl. [Link]

Turns out it wasn’t over a girl, turns out it wasn’t the nationality people said it was, turns out it didn’t happen the way people thought it did.

People have been getting stabbed and getting in fights in Salmiya since I was a kid, social media just makes things a huge mess because people can run with a story and it spreads fast enough that the whole country will believe it before the whole story comes out.

What if it really was self defense because he was attacked with a knife first? Everyone already decided it was “Murder” before anything happened.

What he’s saying is that… the killer whose pictures were posted in news papers had said that the victim attacked him with a knife first. In response he pulled out a knife which he had with him to defend himself and mistakenly hit the victim in the heart.

When he was asked why he was carrying a knife, he said he had to protect himself from some ‘bad’ people. They way i read it in the news paper it sounded like he’s been abused by someone, probably sexually.

The way I read it sounded like he killed a person in self defense.
Although I don’t fully agree with metal detectors there isn’t any better way to stop this.

I agree with you about the metal detectors. Its going to be a bottle neck incoming people. Which will make the mall less like to be desired by actual customers. And these crowds will be aim of molesters and other assholes.

Your right murders have been happening a long time before. But not in public places like malls in front of children and woman.

Three young guys walking around Marina mall with a knife that happen to get into two separate fights within 10 minutes of each other are not walking around the mall to enjoy a peaceful night out, they’re looking for trouble. I’m not saying that any of these guys intended to stab/murder anyone but come on two fights in less than 10 minutes 😮 One guys wearing two shirts and the other guy ‘accidentally’ bumped into the victim ? Yeah I’m not buying it

Its not going to happen, and even if they do put them no one is going to comply. I personally never walk through metal detectors at hotels in Kuwait and the security guards never asked me to come back and go through them and even if they did call me I would have not responded and even if I had passed through (ie the only way in) and beeped I would not stop for check.

By the way, Most malls in Kuwait are built on lands owned by the State and not the owners of the malls. Meaning, the mall management can only put their rules and regulations inside the shops but not in the malls hallways and paths. That is why they cannot say this is “family’s only” mall.. and when they wish to do so they must have a police officer to enforce it (usually a security guard would ask you to leave but if you tell him he has no right he would call the police officer at the mall to enforce his ppower). Also… security guards at the malls have no right to even touch members of the public. So if there is a fight and they lets say pushed someone who fell on the ground and got hurt… the security guard is in the fight as much as the other teenagers and he would be sent to police station for processing too.

Everybody is special. What makes you think you’re entitled to do that? Guess you park your ego here when you travel to the US or Europe.

Feel free to “hahaha” and “lol”, the difference between us and where you come from, you’re used to the savage actions and you need those machines to survive. Here we still sleep at night with our front doors unlocked.

Buddy, I’m not from the West and was hahaing and loling to the part “lolguy” mentioned above – <>

And seriously, your comment earlier is Obnoxious; who do you think you are that you can defy law & security ?

– <>

Let’s see you try your above statement when you go visit high security places in Kuwait itself!

@Nixon, because those machinese are in place to keep some countries armed forces safe. I don’t give a fuck about their presence and I intend to do them no harm. I will not feel inconvenient in at my home for the pleasure of rednecks or their friends.

So I never pass through metal detector and I never allow members of my family to cross them to. I often refuse to have my car boot or hood checked.

But surely those machines at the hotels etc are there to protect the families & people enjoying the facilities at the hotel?! Nothing to do with armed forces?!!? The fact that they allow anyone to pass by without being checked puts everyone in that place at risk, including you & your family! May be you will feel different if something was to happen when you were in there.

يا غريب كن اديب.

Thats what we say in Kuwait. When I’m at home, I expect to be respected. If you don’t like my ego, I suggest you use the same saying that we apply on our selves above when we travel abroad to yourself while you’re at our country and speaking to us.

Akhi, while I agree that you should feel safe in your own country, you have to admit that things have changed a lot here when it comes to security. Personally, it saddens me to see the increase in violent crime and drug related crime. I used to work in Security here in Kuwait and it really opened my eyes to a lot of things. In a way I wish I still lived in that bubble of ignorance since I love this country more than my own ( the USA). Still, even I had to wake up and smell the coffee. Since I am not Kuwaiti there is nothing I can do about it except appeal to other Kuwaitis to try and not be part of the problem by looking the other way or acknowledging that there is a problem. I really hope that Allah keeps this country safe even if from itself.

No they just put them in glass cases so they can see to who they are selling it to. No selling knives for guys on their 20s.
I know it sounds a bit pointless but it will help a bit.

Politicians always feel the urge to react and do something, and they end up inconveniencing everybody for such a small rate of occurrence. I am already imagining the queues.

Perhaps a more practical solution would be to post a couple of armed policemen in every mall, who actually walk and patrol the length of the mall at all times.

Reactive rather than proactive …. Thats how to be an “active” politician because the former needs vision and brains :/

Anyone else feel this is pointless?
This will probably stop such incidents ‘INSIDE’ the mall, but what about out in the streets?
What next, ban knives altogether?
The problem lies in the mindset of people.

They should ban the carrying of knives & other weapons & actually carry out punishments & not allow wasta to interfere. If there was no wasta here it would be a lot safer all round, the malls, the streets, the roads, everywhere.

Here’s a solution: All malls should be closed by 8PM or earlier or be completely closed on weekends, therefore, people won’t go to the malls and I understand that people would get knives inside the malls and I do agree with that, but there should be control; The restaurants should keep their knives hidden, supermarkets and home stores should not sell knives to minors and there should be more security and if there’s metal detectors, then they’ll know people are carrying knives! and also, I feel like those “handbags” that youths are carrying around these days are used for carrying knives and other sharp objects and I’m sure some of you out there will probably disagree with every thing I said, but at least think about these things for a minute and decide and of course, there should be more awareness about these things, I mean, The Avenues has expos and displays about charities and fire safety and such, There should also be one for Mall Safety and things like that.

It’s bad enough we can’t go see a movie without people telling us we can’t watch this scene and that scene. Now this? Of course people are gonna disagree with you! anyone in their right mind would

what the hell? hiding knives, dont let young ppl carry handbags bcs they might hide a knife inside, do not sell knives anywhere!!! and then what? you do not need a knife to kill someone.you can break his neck and kill him as well.or beat to death and kill him in another way.what kind of person would carry a knife to protect himself?protecting himself from whom?only a guy who would hurt another one would think of protecting himself.i personally, never thought of hurting anyone, therefore i never thought that i would need a knife to defend myself.so i never carried one.i totally agree with guys who say that the mind of ppl should be changed by education and beter explanation of life and maybe a bit attention of families

why not just arrest people who try and kill other people. Train security guards to be able to keep an eye out instead of banning handbags, stopping the sale of knives and applying a curfew on shopping and making sure that you cant run errands on the weekends or go out for coffee.

3azeez mentioned one of the major limitations with security guards, they can’t do $h#&.

On another note its awesome to have security guards who have little to no knowledge in self defence, have no idea what their legal limitations are and get paid peanuts.

as usual stupid unnecessary decisions!! waste of money and waste of peoples time!!! did they forget how the Dr was murdered in the avenues ! the killer stole the knife from carfour!

it is clear that in all cases, killing will take time and started with a fight,so all we need a quick response once a fight started.

haha 😀 i can be the batman.i just need a batmobile.and the costume.i know robin so do not bother urself hiring robin and alfred 😉

1- government canceled Conscription
2- again government removed the race track
3- once before they tried to close shisha cafes after 2:00 am.
4- government don’t care about the sports.

so guy who don’t have chalet have some options :-
1- his acts become like a females or Aggressive guy.
2- if he act like a females his life is totally fu**ed.
3-if he act more aggressive he will buy/rent car and waste other people lives in street with his driving behavior.
4- otherwise he become hopeless have no goal in his life so this leads him to consume some drugs to add some flavor in his life, then later you will read his death story in news paper.

and if you read my message you must know that you’re lucky for being a geek & you like mark blog so it concludes that YOU are Good Guy. so please watch out & don’t get stabbed in malls we need a good people like you.

well dont blame government even for the simplest things.just re-read what you wrote.all the options he has are all bad.becoming a street racer, drug addict, a gang…ppl can find things to do in their spare time.what happened to reading books, having hobbies such as fishing or rc or even playing football with friends?what government will do?call all kids, make teams and pay them money to play? thats totally nonsense…the thing is different.in short…do you carry a knife when you go outside?if you carry a knife with you, this would show that you have intention to stab someone somehow…

Instead of spending money on metal detectors spend money to understand why crimes are increasing. The metal detector is like a bandaid and a dramatic reaction to a crisis situation. My landlady called tonight to say that crimes are increasing in our neighborhood — someone needs to study what’s behind it. One of Kuwait’s great advantages has been a low crime rate. What’s going wrong?

you guys should go to india and check how the mall security is there. even you go to a theater they will check you handbags like whats inside. and even in malls they will check in and out before taking you inside the mall. here its nothing which is good. but now i am also scared of messing with anyone. if any boys teases my sister etc.. best thing ask security who doesn’t know any English.

So, now we will not only have to go through long lines to park our cars at the Avenues, but will then have to wait long queues to pass through those detectors!
