We Got Our First Gold

gold

Yesterday, Kuwaiti athlete Fehaid Al Deehani won gold at the Olympics coming first in the men’s double trap shooting event. Sadly since Kuwait is banned from the Olympics, Fehaid won the medal as an independent athlete competing under International Olympic Committee flag, an achievement by itself since no other independent athlete has ever won gold before. No Kuwaiti flag was raised and the Kuwaiti anthem wasn’t played during the medal ceremony.

Kuwait has competed in 12 Olympics since Mexico City in 1968, winning 3 medals in total, 2 bronze and 1 gold with all 3 won by Fehaid.

I’m was so happy to see that! Congrats to all

But it’s just so unfortunate that it won’t go down as a Kuwaiti gold in the history books, u could even see some slight dejection from him on the podium.

Don’t worry, I’m really happy with my Canadian don’t need a visa anywhere citizenship and the fact we have Justin Trudeau as PM, GSP as one of the greatest UFC fighters of all time and the Toronto Maple Leafs. So no offense, but I’m not really interested in the Kuwaiti passport. But thank you for thinking about me.

Best answer ever! But why did you say “we got” a gold medal, instead of Kuwait got a gold medal. I really thought you were given citizenship, I wasn’t being facetious.

PS> I lived in Eindhoven for 8months and because I was a resident I got to vote in local and EU elections and even attended a town hall (gemeente) discussing water price increases. That’s only when you start saying ‘we’. Otherwise they are not worthy of the vast benefits of ‘we’. 😉

I don’t want to be the dude tossing flames on this one, but come on lol dude has been here his whole life, papers or not, the guy is as Kuwaiti as he needs to be. Home is where the heart is! Let the guy be psyched for something good our fellow county men have done

I don’t know why I have to explain myself here. I don’t have to be Kuwaiti to say “we”.

If I was into football and say Real Madrid won and I’m a Real Madrid fan, am I not allowed to say “we won” because I’m not Spanish?

We all live in Kuwait, Kuwaitis and non-Kuwaitis and our team (can I say “our” or am I not allowed to cuz I’m not Kuwaiti?) won a gold medal hence the “We got our first gold”.

Your sentiment is nice. However a national team is not the same as real madrid. If Germany wins the world cup, would you say ‘we’ won the world cup just because you are a team Germany fan?

It’s actually EXACTLY the same. If Germany wins and I am a German supporter (which is like 80% of Lebanon) then we say “we won”. Back in the late 90s I was in Lebanon and I remember after Germany won we all headed to the German embassy in a convoy to celebrate with the ambassador and none of us were German…

All of those things but one (The Maple Leafs) are good if not great. 😛 Sorry, the Maple Leafs are just about as much of a dumpster mess than you see outside your place in Salmiya 😛

I love the way Omar says it as if it’s something we all aspire to be, and he’s like YOU FU**ING WISH! A fine example of that welcoming Kuwait charm.

On top of that, who in the hell gets that upset at someone else for being proud of their own country?! Like if someone showed that much pride for my home country, despite not actually being that nationality, good for them, that makes them more patriotic than most.

the IQ of people reading this blog has to grind a bit higher.. and all this racial crap have to stop . so Omar you are a fricking idiot and people feel bad telling you this. make no mistake, you are an idiot. and if anyone tells you otherwise, dont believe them they are just trying to be nice to you so they dont hurt your feelings… again they are wrong cause you are an idiot and idiots dont have feelings. Ps: your parents believe you are an idiot and they dont want to tell you you were adopted
bottom line… you are a FXXX idiot.

The only difference between a kuwait and non kuwaiti is a kuwait came here within a span of 100-150 years and a non kuwaiti must have been here from a span of 80 years to 1 day old.
But the person who feels for the country is the true citizen, and not the one who just keep enjoying the benfits and does not do any value added service to this country.

I dont see how saying “we” is a big deal! I’m a kuwaiti & I’m very happy that a foreigner shares this joy that a kuwaiti won a gold medal with me. As much as i disagree with mark (on many occasions), this time i agree with him! He’s been living here for a long time, and even if he has only been here for a week, let us be an accepting and tolerant community. Stop constantly segregating this country.. Kuwaitis vs non kuwaitis, then kuwaitis vs kuwaitis (ethnicity, religion, origin) etc.. Lets just enjoy this achievement!

Respect to you, commenter!I hope to randomly bump into you and treat you to a shisha or something some day! #onelove

You guys need to calm down, expat or not.. “WE” comes to light when you have your iqama stamped and become an official legal resident of Kuwait…

So calm down and behave as a community of collected intellectuals individuals !

Even if I am an Expat I would definitely call it as ” We Won ”
Doesn’t matter if you are a Citizen of the country what matters is that you take this country as your home 🙂

What about the Egyptian refusing to shake the hand of his Israeli opponent after losing to him in his judo match? Disgracefui.

It doesn’t matter if he said we, he relates Kuwait to be his home, when do people feel so entitled to loyalty of the country? anyways, it’s a crying shame he has to do it without his country’s recognition, if the people in charge can stop twiddling their thumbs and get up and do something about it then maybe we can see change for our proven athletes. People the world over will not see a Kuwait firsti gold medal but an IOC first gold medal.

You know a blog is successful by how a celebratory post turns into a discussion about citizenship, race and a pinch of hate.
