MSI Wind Experience

MSI Wind

I took my MSI Wind to Munich with me as my travel laptop and it turned out to be a really practical alternative to lugging my MacBook around. Its much more lighter than my MacBook and its also thinner and smaller so it fit easily into my small carry on travel bag and it also wasn’t a pain to carry around. My biggest problem with the Wind is the fact that it runs Windows XP which I hate.

That problem is going to get solved very soon though. It turns out I can install Apple’s Mac OS X onto it which is what I am going to be doing very soon. I ordered a new Dell wifi card from eBay for $15 with shipping to replace the standard one that comes with the MSI Wind. The Dell wifi card works with OSX while the standard card doesn’t. I am also going to be upgrading the battery to a 6-cell which will make it last twice as long. Finally I am going to be upgrading the RAM from 1GB to 2GB, not because I really need to but because it costs only KD7 to do. I am now just waiting for the wifi card to arrive in the mail and once it does I will do the install and post my feedback on how the MSI Wind runs with OSX.

Maybe because I don’t know any better, but I really don’t mind XP. I’ve been using the MSI Wind (also for travel) since a couple of days before your original post and I love everything about it. Everything except the poor battery life.

Mark where are you getting the 6-cell battery from? How much?

Thanks.

I do understand the comparison with your mac and I appreciate it.

But I believe your Eee 900 would be exactly as portable as this and all what you have mentioned could be also applied to your Eee 900.

Not to mention that the Eee 901 would be even perfect .. without purchasing a new battery and a new WiFi.

Am I right or what ? 🙂

The I didn’t compare it to my Eee 900 for a reason, its not as practical. The Eee feels more like a netbook while the MSI Wind feels more as a proper laptop and thats why I compared the MSI to my Macbook and didn’t mention the Eee. The Eee is amazing in the fact that its SUPER portable and battery life is great but its really not practical to use cuz of the keyboard. Also I could install OSX on the Eee 900 but there are a lot of problems with it.

We bought a pink version for my wife and we agree also as eee owners that the larger keyboard is an advantage.

The wifi card is nowhere as good as the eee, but we still have to tweak things so all in not lost yet. XP seems fine as it’s familiar to us.

You mentioned memory for KD 7. May we ask where from please?

What Eee do you have? The wifi on my msi is better than my Eee 900 but i heard the Eee 1000 has better wifi reception compared to the msi.

you can find the memory in Hawalli or check clicknbuy.com.kw

the 6-cell battery should be selling for around kd20 and should be available at the dealer or hawalli

Thanks for the response.

I have an eee 901 and my son an original 700. I maintain the Linux OS but Benj managed to load Ubuntu, but continues to swap and change both his Vaio and the eee betweem Basic Linux, Ubuntu and Vista on the Vaio. One day he will decide which fits best his current needs!

The eee901 wireless connection is phenomenal managing to pick up and use signals not even considered by the Wind or my Compaq.

Benj changed my 901 desktop to the optional non-standard and that did slow matters down, but now its back to basic and flies. Signals are strong and stable but the Wind’s response remains feeble and drops out too easily.Annoying, but as I said, maybe due for some setting changes.

Oh, by the way by fitting the extra RAM, will this invalidate the warranty on the Wind?

The 901 can have an exchange hard drive which might be an interesting customisation, but might therefore slow the super boot up time which is its strength along with battery life – about 7 hours on the basic setting and good enough to last all day at work.

Mark

Watch out. Those hacked Mac OS don’t have all features working. You will probably lose Time Machine (if you use it) and the ability to update you OS.

Well I only use timemachine on my macbook since thats where all my pictures and important stuff is location. The version of maxosx i am installing will allow me to upgrade via software update. the only thing that wont be working properly is wifi and thats why i ordered the dell version. Waiting for USWS now…
