No wheat for you!

The first book I bought and read on my Kindle was Wheat Belly. It’s a book that talks about wheat, how it’s evolved and changed through time and how it’s really not good for you. The author at one point compares it to heroin and as a huge fan of bread myself I can completely understand why. I don’t know how accurate all the information in the book is but it was enough to convince me to try and stay away from wheat… at least for a short period of time to test it out.

According to the book wheat has a lot of negative effects on the human body and once you’re off it you should see positive results. Some of the advantages I’m looking forward to is the ability to focus better, less drowsiness and decreasing whatever fat I have left around my belly. So far I’ve been off wheat for just 48 hours and it hasn’t been that hard. My only concern actually is with my cheat days. Every Friday I usually stop eating healthy and go on a binge filling my stomach with burgers, pizza’s, pastas and lots of dessert. But now I have to stop all of that. No more Vertigo burgers, no more pizza’s and no more Dally’s Chocolate Pudding. I actually don’t know what dessert I can have now since all the desserts I love contain wheat!

Still, I’m curious to try this, not sure how obvious the results will be or if there will be any results but I’m going to try and last as long as possible without wheat and then post any findings here (if any).

I have MS and was told by several doctors to go on a gluten free diet, wheat-free being the main part of it. Gluten is linked to inflammation so people suffering from migraines, rheumatoid arthritis, MS and other inflammatory diseases will notices a lessening of their symptoms usually. I know I feel MUCH better when I stay gluten free and usually have terrible headaches if I cheat at it.

the book also talks about staying away from gluten-free products since those products use something else in place of wheat or something that is also bad. will get you more info on that but dont have the book with me right now.

Nevermind downloaded it on my iphone. There is a section called: Be Gluten-Free but don’t eat “Gluten-Free”

Here is an excerpt:

…many gluten-free foods are made by replacing wheat flour with cornstarch, rice starch, potato starch or tapioca start. This is especially hazardous for anybody looking to drop twenty, thirty or more pounds, since gluten-free foods, though they do not trigger the immune or neurological response of wheat gluten, still trigger the glucose-insulin response that causes you to gain weight.

But remember: Foods made with cornstarch, rice starch, potato starch, and tapioca starch are among the few foods that increase blood sugar even MORE than wheat products.

So gluten-free foods are not problem-free. Gluten-free foods are the likely explanation for the overweight celiac sufferers who eliminate wheat and fail to lose weight.

Thus, wheat elimination is not just about eliminating gluten. Eliminating wheat means eliminating the amylopectin A of wheat, the form of complex carbohydrate that actually increases blood sugar higher than table sugar and candy bars. But you don’t want to replace wheat’s amylopectin A with the rapidly absorbed carbohydrates of powdered rice starch, cornstarch, potato starch, and tapioca starch.

Ever since I started eating healthy my only source of carbs has been sweet potatoes and oats. The only exception is on my cheat days when I overload on burgers and pizzas and rice.
Cutting out wheat completely seems a little scary…what do I do on a cheat day?

I’ve already planned my friday meal. Going to OFK and ordering the Coca-Cola Braised Shortribs, smoked fries and probably the grilled hammour as a main dish or one of the steaks.

Now dessert on the other hand I’m stuck. I usually have the chocolate brownie pudding or go to life with cocao and have their fondant… now not sure what i am going to do.

i don’t know much about Gluteen free and wheat much but since forever im viggie so eating wheat as a must to get some energy but in modarate and lately i heard about bakery in kuwait using gluteen free which they replace the Wheat Flour with combination of rice flour, tapioca flour, almond flour, and potato starch plus their products do not contain preservatives or additivesm they are free of hydrogenated oils, making all of our products trans-fat free.

Read my comment about gluten-free products above. Summary: They are not good because they replace wheat with cornstarch, rice starch, potato starch, and tapioca starch which increase your blood sugar more than wheat and causes you to gain weight.

its been a month for me

for dessert i go for kinder chocolate “kinder boy” or any dark chocolate without wheat or gluten ..

As almost borderline diabetic, I was told to stay off carbohydrates like sugar/ rice/ potatoes and wheat products i.e., white refined flour. It’s very hard to do. No pasta/ pizza/ toast.

What I can say is that I went down 1 dress size with this and I did not even exercise. I can honestly say that elimation of sugar and wheat had a big part in that. I am not that crazy for rice and potatoes.

When it gets too hard to eliminate bread, go for brown bread or seeded bread. Just look at the pack and check the carb content. Usually I go for less than 12carbs per slice.

I went off of wheat for 1 month and 15 days. In any form whole or refined. In fact I was off any kind of grain. No rice, no wheat and no corn! I lost good amount of weight, which wasn’t even my goal. I felt lighter, I felt I could feel my body movement lighter and I don’t mean by weight but just that I was feeling so much less lazier or drowsiness. I certainly felt ‘happier’ and I know that sounds strange but I was feeling so positive, which might be psychological but a point to consider. Oh and your digestion system will love you and I was also feeling more thirsty which is good because generally I don’t drink enough water.

First week was hard specially considering I’m an Indian and most food goes with wheat and rice! But once I managed that I didn’t find it very hard. The only difficult part was chocolate desserts, I had dreams of gooey chocolate cake and desserts like every single day for the first few weeks!

I got that question all the time. Eggs, fruits, dry fruits, gluten free almond milk – breakfast

Lean grilled meat with interesting salads. A cooling drink like buttermilk etc in between.

Dinner would be mostly soups. And even though all this sounds boring, if u r home cook and can manage to make yourself interesting salads and soups, it turned out to be a great experience. I might do it again beginning next year 🙂 If dessert was a bit too necessary I would go with a smallish bar of dark chocolate.

It’s not just wheat, it’s grains in general. There’s a hilarious and highly informative documentary called “Fathead” that you should watch if you’re interested in this topic. Here are a few key points from the movie:

Personally, I get all my carbs from fruits and green leafy veggies. I feel healthy as fuuuuu. I’ve found that it helps greatly with my diet adherence. Every time I eat a grain based food item I crave junk food. It’s like a gateway drug.

Coeliac disease is where wheat is really bad for your system. You can check for it with a blood test at clinics in Kuwait.

WOW. this shocked me. I’ve been eating healthy for the last 6 years and working out and wheat is part of my diet almost 3 times a day. this is sad

Rice cakes are a good alternative to bread. You can’t make a sandwich, but you feel like you’ve eaten something substantial.

you can substitute desserts with fresh fruits, its healthy has lots of fibers, water, vitamins and antioxidants (esp. Grapes) they taste better than normal desserts, its earthy natural and clean plus its fat free……. Nuts are great treats aswell… key word here is moderation.
Go back to mother nature and enjoy the goddness she offers

wheat is bad and yet people have been eating it for thousands of years?!

yeah, i am not buying it.

the problem with our food today is that it is highly processed. thats why we have a new disease pop up every year..its not the wheat, its what they do with it.

personally, i can never live on a wheat free diet. too inconvenient.

You just answered yourself on why wheat is bad. It’s not the wheat from 1000 year ago that’s bad it’s the wheat produced today and that’s what the book says as well.

Any of the ‘refined’ foods are bad for you- just try and eat everything in as near its natural state as possible ( not breathing) and you’ll be ok- allergies will stop, pains will cease and you will have more energy, BP will drop and all sorts of weird and wonderful things will happen!

“Quit smoking” I quit smoking and all the pleasure it gives me while going through the hard times in sake of avoiding cancer

“Quit junk food, high-in-sugars, processed food” and I did it because my cholesterol levels went a bit higher than normal

“Quit Coke” I love drinking Coke, but after reading about how badly one cup may affects every single organ in my body I decided to stop it

“Quit wheat!!!” come on now! what else left to enjoy the rest of my life, I bet all of you guys will fail this

Hey Mark, did you continue staying away from wheat or not? If yes, did you see any positive results?

Did anybody else try it?

i did it for 5 weeks and then went back to my regular diet. I’m going to start again once i get back from london and will compare to my current state. I don’t think being off wheat did anything dramatic to me though.
