Slumdog Millionaire

Definitely by far one of the best movies I’ve watched in a very very long time. Just when I was starting to think movies were getting boring and dull comes along something so different and colorful.

Here is the movie summary taken from IMDB:

The story of Jamal Malik, an 18 year-old orphan from the slums of Mumbai, who is about to experience the biggest day of his life. With the whole nation watching, he is just one question away from winning a staggering 20 million rupees on India’s “Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?” But when the show breaks for the night, police arrest him on suspicion of cheating; how could a street kid know so much? Desperate to prove his innocence, Jamal tells the story of his life in the slum where he and his brother grew up, of their adventures together on the road, of vicious encounters with local gangs, and of Latika, the girl he loved and lost. Each chapter of his story reveals the key to the answer to one of the game show’s questions. Each chapter of Jamal’s increasingly layered story reveals where he learned the answers to the show’s seemingly impossible quizzes. But one question remains a mystery: what is this young man with no apparent desire for riches really doing on the game show? When the new day dawns and Jamal returns to answer the final question, the Inspector and sixty million viewers are about to find out. At the heart of its storytelling lies the question of how anyone comes to know the things they know about life and love.

Glen: I got fed up of waiting for KNCC to screen it (its not even coming soon!) so I got a hold of the movie via unorthodox means.

Lexicon: Still need to watch that, I am assuming it will never get released anywhere in the Middle East…

Boring movies? Really? This month so far and the last have had some of the greatest films I’ve seen in quite some time. I’m curious Mark, what movies have you been watching lately?(Besides Slumdog, which in my opinion was brilliant)

It’s definitely a “wow” movie. I was a bit hesitant downloading a dvd screener copy as I usually wait for the official dvd to get released.

I am glad I did not wait. The quality was great and the movie is amazing.
It’s not even released in many countries. Even India (where the movie is shot) will see it’s official release on Jan 23.

Expect some Oscar nominations for the movie.

Ok…so an indian story told by an English Man and it becomes amazing..and am sure if same had been directed by an indian director they would have questioned Salim and Jamal Train Top Dare!
Bullshit. Mind you i loved trainspotting.

Lexicon, where can I download waltz with bashir I can’t seem to find it.

Slumdog was fantastic… So was Frost/Nixon and the wrestler

Actually from the summary of the movie it seems like its inspired from a book i read recently: “Q and A” by Vikas Swarup. its a great read and i recommend it to everybody (if you can find it in this bookless country)

The name of the main character in the book is Ram Mohammad Thomas though. Weird they would change his name in the movie as it is highly symbolic: its a muslim-christian-hindu name and enabled the hero to get out of many situations throughout the story…

Great movie Mark!!! And this is coming from a former Indian. The movie is based in Bombay/mumbai, and I have been to those places. I always heard those stories from my dad, who grew up there, but I never really realized how harsh life was there. My dad made it out of there to Kuwait, and he worked hard to send me to college in the States, where I ended up settling.

I guess that is something Ive got to be thankful to Kuwait for…for giving us a chance and an opportunity for a better life.

Either way…great pick!!!!

OK OK GUYS !!! i have heard anuff … i was waiting for a feedback for this movie … now am sure that i will watch it asap … thx mark and commenters ….

It has swept the Golden Globe Awards for Best Movie, Best Director, Best Screenplay and Best Original Score……It was nominated only in these categories.

Am surprised that no untoward Racist opines have posted here on the topic by now??!!?? Must be the Manic Monday blues doing the rounds.. roll on tuesday…….. & the racist comments! 😉

for some reason i thought this was going to be a hilarious comedy about this hindi dude getting himself into trouble. This could have been SO much better than this sappy, inspirational BS.

See what I meant? Check out Holla’s comments…
People are just so ‘stereotyping’ when it comes to Indians making it big in the international arena!

Slumdog is good. But Taare zameen par in hindi is better. The former is a brown story and movie made for white guys (Not being racist). Indians have seen similar movies many times but the sensibilties does not appeal to westerners. But no doubt its a great movie.

lol. friend. you have lost it. West is not the place to be now. As they say in Slumdog mumbai is the center of the world. West is old world already.

Message for Dj Hams…

There is more to India than what is shown in the movie…. India is not equal to slums….
there is poverty and poor people everywhere in the world including kuwait. What do you have to say about the bedouins in Kuwait.. who are unjustly treated in their own country by fellow kuwaitis and live in similar conditions….
Its good that you feel lucky living a good life in Kuwait… but that doesn’t mean that you stereotype India by what you see. Get your facts right and then comment..

Slumdog is a movie made by Danny Boyle showing a guy who lives in the slums and goes on to win 20 million… It shows about his life experiences and not what India is.
If tomorrow someone makes a movie on bedouins or about some places in US .. Would that give us a complete picture of Kuwait or US? The answer is NO.
Similarly, India is not confined to slums or the living conditions you see in the movie. Its much more than that. And the world should know this.

Message for DJ Hams..

It’s just your luck that you are well placed now in Kuwait. There are so many locals and foreigners in India making a hell lot of money and enjoying their lives much more than what we Arabs enjoy here.

I was on a short visit to Chennai and Mumbai and experienced a lot. Even the middle class in Mumbai work with their full potential and lead a luxorious life . While in Chennai , parents are very keen on their child’s education . They make sure their kid gets the best educ. before spending on anything else. Back to Mumbai , poverty exists . There are areas in Mumbai where ppl dont get 2 square meals a day .

Every place in the world has its own advantages and disadvantages . In fact , you could have been leading a more comfortable life if you were worked for an MNC in mumbai .

Do not comment without knowing the facts .I’m coming to the same point again , every country has its own advantages and disadvantages . The economic development of the country is what i appreciate .

Though i am an arab and not an indian , i constantly keep myself updated about india and i enjoy to go there.

DJ Hams…why dont you visit Mumbai once ?
After all …you are leading a very comfortable(“better life”) in Kuwait . So, a 2-way trip to India on Emirates would be child’s play…ain’t it ?

i really liked this movies , i watched it few dayz ago twice! though sum parts were kinda sad and made me wonder if stuff like that really happen to kidz in india ! but overall the movie was really gr8
