Found these photos in the @alahmadi_town instagram account. The one above is my favorite because of the fact it looks like it was taken in a small American town.

I’m starting to think that living in Kuwait in the pre-2000 era would be better than current day.
i think living in the 50-70s anywhere in the world would be better than current day anywhere in the world.
Except maybe communist countries.
well segragation in the states would have sucked! especially if you were black!
but besides things like racism, the 50’s would have been cool!
when i came to Kuwait, i could see how american capitalism ruined cultures around the world……
Brother,
Segregation in the US was not only towards Blacks. Ask any Latino, Asian or Arab who lived there at that time. EVERYONE was discriminated who did not fit the AngloSaxon mold. Even now there is still heavy discrimination against Latinos, Asians, Africans, and Arabs.
It sucks when people like you make assumptions.
I just didn’t want to dip into negativity, and rather just wanted to take a peek into it; hence why i said segregation in the states would have sucked, ESPECIALLY if you were black. There were more blacks in the U.S. at the time more than any other minority.
Thanks for the history lesson that no one asked for.
Most of those shots are of the Ahmadi Crescent (market) area which is now almost demolished to make way for a newer souq/mall.
I live in Ahmadi and moved there just as they began to close down the Souq area. The new mall has been built a long time ago but due to issues with the Ministry of Energy they have not been given the energy to operate. They have a nice new clinic as well but it seems it might never open. That is sad since it is literally right next door to my house. As for the Ahmadi Crescent it is Not almost demolished. In fact it has been over two years and they really have not done much. What the government has decided to do in order to boost tourism is to convert the Ahmadi Crescent in to another Old Market type souq.
They also have the Ahmadi park which is huge, the zoo is closed for repairs for a couple of months.
Fab- live these old photos! Like those old postcards you’ve shown. Mad men in Kuwait. Think sepia makes Kuwait look good! 🙂
British, you mean British town, is it really that difficult to distinguish between american and British style ?
No, I meant American town.
I grew up on US military installations since my father was in the US Army, later on I joined as well. My first impression of Ahmadi was that of a typical US military base since the architecture is the same. Even the layout of much of Ahmadi is the same. In fact if a good comparison to Ahmadi would be Fort Bliss, Texas.
The last photo is a cinema theatre. Amazing that I recognized it since I was just 7 years old at that time!
