Kuwait 1985-88

Kuwait City 1987. Vintage store front.

Mark Lowey (AbuJack), a construction project management professional and an amateur photographer lived in Kuwait between 1985 and 1988. The past few months he’s been scanning and posting some of the pictures he took during his time in Kuwait (and KSA) on his twitter account. I’ve taken a few of his photos along with the captions and shared them here but you can check out more photos on his twitter account @molowey

Jack’s face in the mangaf photo is epic! He’s like: “dad, I think you should stop now”. Adorable.
Also look at that beach! Miss going to public beaches in Kuwait.

Great pix dude.. 80’s was frikkin awesome. After a long day at fahaheel garden and then the beach we’d head to that very same hungry bunny…

Awesome post…

What thew me of is the name in Arabic. In Arabic is says Kids ‘ูˆ’ Us. Then I realized there is no international brand called Kids R Us or Kids N Us. Its Toys R Us that I was thinking of.

Nonetheless, why would the name in Arabic be ‘ูˆ’ and ‘R’ in english.

Amazing! Kuwait was so empty back then, something I always think about. Everywhere you looked was just a lot of empty space, neighborhoods had much less people in them, you had things like that giant Kids R Us (I remember that logo) just taking up space because there was so much of it.

Even heavily packed areas today like South Surra were just desert until recently, I remember not even knowing there was a 6th ring road when I was young.

Those Mangaf kids are probably in their 40s now

That toy shop brings so mani beautiful memories. That Girl wearing a blue dress – it’s embroidered with a outline of The Palm Dubai ๐Ÿ”ฎ

Mark, I own his book. got it used off of ebay some time ago. I’ll hit you up after work and you can have it.
