Kuwait by Brett Jordan

For those of you who attended the showing of the short film “Playtime” this past Thursday (a great film btw) will probably recall the director during the Q&A session mentioning Brett Jordan’s photos as being one of his sources of inspiration.

Brett Jordan’s parents lived in Kuwait back in the 60s and he managed to scan a ton of his parents photos and then uploaded them onto Flickr. I’ve already posted about Brett’s photos a number of times over the years but I know many of you haven’t seen them before. Also, Brett keeps adding photos as he finds them so there might be a bunch that weren’t there the last time you saw them.

Check out all the photos on Brett’s Flickr page [Here]

Great pics, and really good quality / colours on many of them. Seems like they had a fair bit of hooch knocking around back then.

Only 50 years ago citizens were still living in tents, look at them now…..they tore down all of the old houses and buildings, seems like they are trying to erase the past so no one will know how their parents lived. I must say the pics are beautiful, times were much more simple.

The majority of Kuwaiti citizens weren’t living in tents 50 years ago. I have no idea where you get your information from. We have been urban, sedentary people since the 17th century. Please refrain from distorting my country’s history. The majority of Kuwaitis lived in homes in the town of Kuwait – NOT tents. In 1910, the town of Kuwait had more than 50,000 inhabitants. We Kuwaitis lived in mud houses in Sharq, Jibla and Mirgab. Go look up the history of Kuwait.

We were not tribal Bedouins 50 years ago, we have been urbanized sedentary people for many centuries. Tribal Kuwaitis got urbanized 30 years ago. Unfortunately, most tribal Kuwaitis are naturalized citizens with limited rights (they can only vote after 40 years and they can’t run for office). Tribal Kuwaitis are also socially and economically disadvantaged.

The pictures are a wonderful glimpse. Reminded me of the times my dad would take me and my brother out and just drives around. Yeah the desert was green. Digging for truffles ? Sure just drive out of the main city for an hour.

Took 2 generation raised by maids to ruin our culture.
