The games are over and there was one thing about it that pissed me off and its the fact that Qatar nationalized so many athletes, over 30 in fact. I think that was a very cheap and unfair move. I think there should be rules to forbid such actions. The Olympic and Asian games is a sport, not a business. Nationalized players should not be allowed to take part in the games. I have been meaning to post about this for a while but Kuwitism’s post just reminded me about it.

It a very sad fact, especially for the countries from which these athletes are bought from. These are poor countries and they (used to) take a lot of pride in their athletes. Some of these athletes still go back and train in the country of birth because of the advantages it offers. The players original countries should ban them from returning to their place of birth.
Anyone remember Zola Budd?
There is a guy playing for the Lebanese basketball squad called Khoury – but his original name is Afeaki and he comes from Tonga! Surely there must be some poor guy in Lebanon ALMOST as good as a guy from Tonga who can play bball!
lol yeah exactly, i mean getting a basketball player from Tonga? Where the fuck is Tonga?!
Zola Budd – Oh yeah, I remember that sensation and the fiasco she created at the LA olympic games.
Now thats just sad, they did a great job holding the games, but doesnt mean they have to try to win everything!
One or two nationalized/imported players here or there is sort of OK, but not an entire squad!
This can’t be good for their PR efforts
I was watching a squash game between a “real” Qatari called Abduldahi Al Marri or something like that, against an asian guy from Hong Kong. It was hilarious. The Qatari guy treated his opponent as if it was a ‘local’ fighting over a parking space down his local supermaket against some ‘asian’ expat labourer. Standing in his way blocking the ball, etc.
It made me laugh… I don’t know/care who won in the end.
The french team that won the world cup in ’98 was composed mostly of players who did not have a ‘french’ background…
bikeshed… true but at least they grew up in France and were not imported and nationalized last year
Rubbish!
Check out how many foreign athletes have been naturalized by the USA (navratilova,…), UK (kwinsky,…), Australia.
They all do it!
dude martina navratilova moved to the US in 1975 and became a US citizen in 1981.
They didn’t make her a US citizen so she could play tennis for the national team. There is a big difference.
hey every 1 the asian games was wooooow grate
