Cinescape is launching 4DX tomorrow with Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2. Ticket prices for 4DX films is KD8 which is double the price of regular tickets. According to the Grand Cinemas website they’re also going to be launching 4DX soon.

Not sure if I care for 4DX much, it sounds like a gimmick but I guess I’ll have to try it out at least once before I make up my mind on it.

Back in August Grand Cinemas gave me a “VIP Card” that would allow me to watch an unlimited number of movies with a friend for free and for a full year. Yesterday I finally got to use the card and it reminded me on why I hadn’t used it up until now.

Very Big Shot (or Film Kteer Kbeer in Arabic) is a Lebanese film I’ve been wanting to watch for awhile now since the plot involved drugs and I had never seen a drug related Lebanese film. It also seems I’m the only one who wanted to watch it since the movie theater last night was completely empty except for me and my friend. A private viewing I guess. The film is in Arabic with English subtitles and was really fun to watch, it had violence and lots of humor throughout and it never slowed down. The acting was fantastic and the plot absurd but realistic at the same time. Even the ending was great although I’m not sure if anyone other than Lebanese would get it.

My only issue with the film was the censorship. I mean if they were only cutting kissing scenes thats fine but now they’re cutting scenes leading up to the kiss? Why? And then they’re still censoring swear words? I don’t get that and they’re not even consistent with it. Anyway, I hate watching movies locally but this one wasn’t available to torrent the last time I checked. So if you’re looking for a good foreign movie to watch definitely check this one out.

I’ve been hearing rumblings of a third cinema operator coming to Kuwait for awhile now but I didn’t think it would ever happen. The market is just too small and Cinescape is so dominant that I figured it just wouldn’t make financial sense for a third cinema operator to want to come in and compete. I guess I was wrong.

Sky Cinemas is the new cinema operator in town and they’ve just soft launched their first location in Dalal Complex on Salem Al Mubarek Street. If you’re wondering what building that is, it’s the new tower opposite Zahra Complex [Map]. Right now they have one theater operational and it’s playing Ant-Man but by next week they’ll have two more theaters operational as well as more movies to choose from including the new Mission Impossible.

Their ticket prices are KD3.5 which is exactly like Grand Cinemas and Cinescape plus they don’t have IMAX, so I don’t really see what their advantage is. They’re also located right in the middle between Cinescape Fanar and Cinescape Marina Mall so they have their work cut out for them. Turns out the new movie The Wolf of Wall Street was completely butchered for the Gulf the region. It seems the movie distributor censored the movie before sending it out to movie theaters across the GCC where local censorship also cut scenes from the movie. The original movie is 180 minutes long while in UAE its 135 minutes, in Qatar 134 minutes and in Kuwait 130 minutes long. Kinda reminds me of the story of how when Basic Instinct came out in Kuwait it was a short film.
