VOX Cinemas, one of the leading cinema chains in the Middle East is opening in Kuwait this coming March. VOX will be opening at Avenues Phase 4 and house 17 screens with a seating capacity of around 1,679 seats.
Kuwait already has three cinema chains operating locally, Cinescape, Grand Cinemas and Sky Cinemas, so VOX will be the fourth. And yes, movies will also be censored at VOX. For more information, click [Here]

This why I like and hate cinema. I can watch a movie early, but its censored. The best version of the movie is always at my home.
Is there anywhere in our region where movies aren’t censored? I watched The Disaster Artist here in Dubai last night and it was censored, they also censor movies in Lebanon all the time. Do I have to fly out to Europe just to watch a movie? I don’t mind waiting for movies to come out online, but every now and then I like going to the movies with friends.
If you make it to the Dubai International Film Festival every December, you can watch the best & latest films from all over the world, totally uncensored. Even those containing graphic nudity. This year’s films included The Disaster Artist, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri; Shape of Water; Downsizing; The Square; Killing of a Sacred Deer; I,Tonya; Molly’s Game; Death of Stalin; You Were Never Really Here; In the Fade; & a lot more.
Also, films that I’ve watched here in cinema clubs like Cinemagics, AWARE, Dar Al Athar, were not censored. Granted there wasn’t that much censorable material in them but at least the kisses were not cut out!
It’s the level of censorship that differs. Dubai and Bahrain are far less stringent, notably with Bollywood movies (which for the record, I dont understand why Kuwait censors!)
Short answer: NO!
Four competitors and there’s not really much difference in pricing, food, offers, etc.
Because Kuwait is a prime example of monopoly businesses, and at best oligopoly. What you want (competitive markets and demand & supply driving prices) is found in a *proper* capitalist economy.
Pricing wise, there’s probably an agreement to keep the same price.
I doubt there is. This is probably the lowest they can make the prices while still turning a profit. I don’t think it’s the price that’s stopping people from going to the movies. Censorship and Netflix and all the other distractions we have is the issue.
The price has been the same for years, in fact as far as I remember this is an increased price. I also doubt that there is a decrease in attendance. Going to the cinema is still one of the top pastimes for the general public and frankly, I think they don’t care about censorship, in fact in some cases they demand it.
As for fixing the price between competitors, this is a common practice in Kuwait’s economy.
I don’t think price fixing is a common practice. It’s a cutthroat business, you have 3 companies right now with a fourth coming in to try and grab as many moviegoers they can, so why would they all get together and agree to be priced the same. I can’t imagine them all being on the same side on this.
Ok, sorry. You’re the expert.
Can’t you have a discussion without getting upset?
Actually Mark is no expert, and price fixing is common because Kuwait does not have anti-competition laws like other jurisdictions. Since its not illegal, its also not a secret.
Ask any 5 star hotel why they can’t sell rooms cheaper even with an occupancy rate of 12%? Go ask a very fancy 4 star hotel, how come you intentionally removed the pool to lose a star, just to be able to set your own prices as a 4 star hotel. 5 star hotels in Kuwait are an oligopoly, so are cinemas, so are the 12 (only 12) individuals who import all the fruits and vegetables to kuwait.
I highly disagree. The food and the overall experience in Grand Cinema is one I enjoy more than in Cinescape. However the good thing with Cinescape is the amount of Cinema screens around Kuwait
At least Cinescape reduces prices on Monday & Tuesday. The other two companies in the market don’t do that. So, these two days the theatres are more than 80% full for most movies.
Hopefully more competition reduces the ticket price at the window.
I don’t understand why we need four cinemas in Kuwait.
They are all competing to the same market share and they have similar services.
Any form of competition is usually a good thing, and VOX Cinemas are actually great and one of the best in the region from what I experienced
I disagree. Between Cinescape and Grand, they have some exclusivity with the distributors, esp. for Indian movies. That’s why you no longer see these movies being screened at Grand.
They could add another 30 cinema companies, and I will still avoid them all until the censorship stops.
Cry me a river.
any clue about the ticket price?
the only info i have is from that press release, they don’t mention prices in it
With Vox cinemas coming in I hope they soon lose their aversion to screening of Irani cinema in Kuwait. There’s a huge appetite and demand for Farsi cinema in Kuwait.
If you are paying the same price then select the one with better facilities. they have some premier seating in cinescape now(they are really cool with chargin points and very comfortable seats). You got to pay extra 500 fills for the same. You may try it out on Mondays at the price of 2KD. The normal seats are priced at 1.750KD on Mondays now.
