Google will launch a new feature Wednesday: Google Health, that will help you find treatments, symptoms or alternative medicine treatments. You can try it today (be sure to set your Google interface to English). [Link]
I am not so sure about people heading for the internet to treat themselves. Medicine is much more complicated than a google search guys.
Mishref has quite rightly, hit the nail on its head. Self medication can take a life of it own often with some very sorry outcomes. The lack of adequate moderated peer reviewed medical info. for the lay public, out on the Net is still an issue.
That said, with or without Google you still can get sound medical advice/ tips from http://www.patient.co.uk
& http://www.drugs.com
Perhaps the huge premium that their stock trades at is actually worth paying…
these guys continue to creep into all knowledge-based fields. Impressive.
I actually think its very practical. I already used to use google to try and find medical tips.. i am not going to try and perform surgery on myself but i would like to know atleast more about my problem before visiting the doctor.
Also some stuff we usually ignore because we feel its not worth going to the doctor for like a headace or stomach cramps. Now you can atleast research your problem and find out what you might need to eat or do to solve your stomach problem..
Yahoo health has helped me on many occasions. For example when I or a relative get sick the Dr prescribes antibiotics pain killers etc… I log on to yahoo health and write down the medicine name and it tells me what that medicine does and what are its side effects. Its quite useful to be honest. It also describes symptoms of diseases which is an excellent source. No doubt Google health will be better than yahoo. /me loves Google *smile*
