Deliveroo is Coming to Kuwait!

I just found out that the popular British online food delivery company Deliveroo is coming to Kuwait. Deliveroo is the British equivalent to Carriage and they operate in over two hundred cities including Dubai. Kuwait is going to be a pretty tough market for them since Carriage and Talabat have the market cornered here, but competition is always great for us.

Not sure what else can they offer. Unless there will be super discounts and offers with the restaurants they will have, it’s really not going to make any difference (to me).

Well the biggest complaint from restaurants is the high percentage Carriage take. The biggest complaint from consumers is the 1KD fee they need to pay.

If deliveroo take a smaller cut from restaurants and a smaller delivery fee from consumers, they might be able to take it.

Isn’t there an authority for competition that limits businesses from lowering below a certain rate within similar businesses? If so, I guess talabat and carriage will have another friend to play along with

I would easily choose Deliveroo over talabat or carriage, especially with their Deliveroo plus option. With Deliveroo plus I would only have to pay £7.99 a month (about 3 kwd), and I would receive all my order for the month without a delivery fee. Very convenient for people who order a lot, I hope they would bring that option to Kuwait.

I find Talabat very unreliable as delivery times vary wildly depending on the restaurant, drivers can’t find the location and there’s no way to track them. So I switched completely to Carriage which is a more reliable platform, except past few times deliveries have been delayed, tracking software is giving wrong info etc. I complained on their helpline twice and the second time the representative was honest enough to say that they were in the midst of changing drivers etc which was causing a disruption. So a bit more competition may actually be good.

Oh this is great. I really hope these people have delivery guys who speak English. Am so tired of dealing with rude delivery person who don’t speak a single word in English, yet expect me to tell them my exact location. Whats the point in filling all the details and always putting in comments to send some driver who can speak English.

Actually, Kazoo, Sonia makes a fair point. A person working in Kuwait should be able to converse in English or Arabic, not necessarily fluently, but at least at a rudimentary level if they’re going to work as delivery men. Otherwise, it makes for a terrible service from Carriage.

If they don’t speak English, they try to speak Arabic. Granted it’s at a vey rudimentary level, but it’s a language that they’ve adopted at a much later stage in their life. Yes, I get a little frustrated too sometimes, but then I remember that I’m in my home watching Netflix in my sweats while someone is out there navigating our streets and weaving through traffic to get me a chicken sandwich and fries on time.

Be patient with others. I don’t think we’d fare too well as a tiffinwalla in India, no matter how rudimentarily we speak their language (and they have hundreds).

Honestly speaking, i do speak basic Arabic. I have had real bad experiences with Zitaat delivery guys to be very precise. One time this guy calls me and asked me to send my location on his whatsapp, which i did. Now to navigate through Google maps doesn’t really require you to be an expert in English. God knows where he was and after waiting for almost 2 hours, the restaurant calls me asking if i cancelled my order and that the delivery guy has returned my food saying i cancelled it. Second time 2 delivery guys were sitting in the car and reached down my building and kept calling me asking which is my building and saying that they can’t find it and i went down only to find these 2 guys stand right down my building smoking. I asked them what was so hard to find the building and this is it and why couldn’t he come up and he just kept talking so loud and yelling something. This is what i meant by rude behavior.

Sorry for your bad experience, but let’s not lump all delivery drivers into this category. They try the best they can – our streets are tricky. I’m a born-and-raised Kuwaiti and still get lost sometimes, google maps or not. At the end of the day, they’re delivering food, not an organ for a transplant. Just be patient, that’s all ❤️

Sure, no worries. Waiting for 2 hours for a delivery sure shows you how patient i am 🙂 Neways, just hoping for a good change. That’s all.

Carriage isnt what it used to be when they started. The past 4 orders i made were terrible in terms of delivery therefor i have stopped using them completely.

Not really.

Let’s say Mark cooks twice a day instead of ordering.

Each meal, preparing, chopping, cutting, cooking, cleaning the dishes, drying the, – each meal would take about 1 hour 15 minutes.

2 meals = 2 and half hours.

2KD for 2 and a half hours of free time daily. That’s not a bad deal.

Not forgetting time for grocery shopping.

What I’ve found is that many people have a love/hate relationship with carriage. They can go smooth for 10 orders and then mess up badly once and you’d never want to order from them again because of how bad they messed up. When I studied abroad in the UK, deliveroo was very consistently good. As someone mentioned above, I hope they bring in the Deliveroo plus option. Talabat delivery timings suck! They’re lucky that there customer service is good at least.

Here’s something no one is doing, SEARCH. Let’s say I’m craving a roast beef sandwich, I search for roast beef and it shows me all the restaurants that can deliver a god damn roast beef sandwich.

i wish i could upvote this, coz when i want om ali i dont want to look through every arabic restaurant listed in the app.

Hm, i’ve only see bicycle riders with Deliveroo in the UK and in Ireland. Wonder if they’ll just have teal cars instead of folks in teal deliverro jackets.

2 things though:

1. You’d assume a British company operating internationally would have a set of standards (minimum wage anyone?) Or a fancy policy that they abide by or at least would like to be advertised as such which may render the whole unfeasible.

2. Depends on their corresponding Kuwaiti sponsor and how big his *cough* is compared to other “whales” in the market.

I think the entrance of Deliveroo to the local market will cause some changes. With their financial and operational power they are capable of causing some trouble to the smaller comapanies (Makan, Jeebley, Zitaat , Cravez). At the same time all of these smaller companies combined with Carraige and Talabat will cause trouble to Deliveroo.

It all depends on Deliveroo and how they can attract local power and knowledge in the market, for example:
1- Attracting restauarants by lower charges.
2- Customers by lower fares.
3. Attracting top managers , employees and drivers from competitors.
4. Mergers and acquisitions of with the smaller delivery companies.

I preferred Carriage tbh. The design of the app is cleaner and more user friendly compared to deliveroo. Carriage also provides more services, delivers more than just food. I probably won’t use it in Kuwait because it will remind me of university exams which were the only cases were I’d use deliveroo cause I’d be too busy and stressed to cook, it would also remind me of how bland food in the Uk is… I’m literally using deliveroo right now.

Imagine if Deliveroo plus launched in the region with this price:

50 AED/ 4 KWD / 50 SAR

They have just launched the service in Singapore for $10,90 , which is like £6! so don’t be surprised if it’s going to be like this:

35 AED / 3 KWD / 35 SAR

This will be INSANE!
