I don’t mean to be disrespectful to God (God rocks! He’s the best) but I think Donuts are his little joke that he plays on us. He made celery taste like shit… but it’s good for us. He made donuts, chocolate, muffins, POCKY, Pain Au Chocolat, etc. etc. taste AWESOME but will kill us with their delicious trans-fats and general naughtiness.

I also think if he planned it better, God would have made lying around and watching TV burn more calories than going on the tradmill at the gym.

actually mooch … its worse than you think… He makes some people who have absolutely no effect whatsoever from eating all these “trans-fats” foods. I wish i could gain a few pounds.

The problem with donuts from Krispy Kreme is not only the calories from fat, sugar and flour – it’s that the fats used are very bad for you. Even the American government is now saying that “trans fats” are toxic at almost any level. I don’t let my kids eat donuts at all.

If you ate traditional fried Arabic pastries (I’m thinking of those sweet dough balls covered in syrup that they make on Epiphany, January 6 – are they called luqum al-qadi, or is that something else?) the calories might be somewhat equivalent but probably the health effect would be better – IF the cook used traditional oils or fats to fry. You would be better off eating pastry or potatoes fried in lard (animal fat) than fried in Crisco or other hydrogenated fats. The hydrogenated fats, or trans fats, which are solid at room temperature, cause heart disease but also impair neurological functioning (by depleting the good fats, especially Omega 3s); they may have a long term effect on promoting cancers. Toxic at any level! New York City has banned them.

really and truly, Krispy Kreme is evil for many reasons. Eat traditional Arab pastries cooked in traditional ways – you’ll be better off and it’s better for the local economy and culture.
