Rays One

Speaking of abandoned places, does anyone still go to Rays One on blajat street in Salmiya? It’s been there for as long as I remember and even back in the 90s it was always empty. I don’t think I’ve ever seen anyone inside and yet its remained open all these years.

Update: Just found the following snippet from the US State department “Weekender’s Guide to Life in Kuwait – 2007 Edition

RAY’S ONE RESTAURANT: This restaurant has a fish festival every Thursday and Friday serving a variety of fish cooked in a variety of ways – fried, steamed, grilled, smoked etc. During the week it serves an international cuisine.

Oh snap, my friend & I were talking about it just the other day. We both agreed that it’s a very shady place. The fact that they were able to stay afloat for 20 years with no one ever entering the restaurant and it being in a very expensive location raises a lot of questions.

I went there once when I first came to Kuwait, it was some kind of wedding gathering for females but not a place I would frequent. I saw a couple heads in the window the other day as I took the shortcut around the traffic light.

I know for a fact that gatherings can be arranged there for any occasion.
But the fact that it is running until now means that either its generating money or something unusual about that place

I went there once with my wife when we moved to Kuwait over six years back. We concluded that they’ve named it Rays ONE because most of the people will go there only once, if at all they go

That’s right next to my daily walking track. I can usually see people inside though I wouldn’t say it’s crowded by any means. They also rent out the hall for parties and you can either have them arrange the food or arrange your own.

My husband goes every once in a while to meet with clients. It’s big for shisha smokers and there’s always people inside, though maybe not full. Even in the daytime there’s people who frequent it regularly. There are also events held there. If you live around the area and pay attention, you’ll see. I don’t think there’s anything shade going on. I doubt they’re hanging on by much more than a thread though.

I don’t think in our current times they need to be discreet. Women & sheesha is a normal scene these days in popular places.

The place is under a law suit and have been under investigation for building on an improper location. The road can not be expanded because the building is in the way. I heard they have terrible service and the food is bad. Never went there nor want to.

I always thought that they were an ice cream restaurant/company like baskin robin as a kid, especially because of the sign.

Went there for a gathering. not good experience. not many waiters to attend. buffet was short of food.
