What is the Oldest Restaurant in Kuwait?

Someone posted an interesting query in the Kuwestions section, what is the oldest restaurant in Kuwait? One reader suggested Mais Alghanim which is possible since its been active since 1953, but I’m curious if there is anything older that is still around and active?

The two photos here were taken from the Mais Alghanim photo gallery [Here]

if you looking for oldest restaurant in kuwait, way before Mais Alghanim and still working, you’ll find that in Soug AlMubarakiya, you need to do a little digging.

if u need first burger restaurant well it was in 1964 by Haroun Alrasheed restaurant.

I think Mais AL-Ghanim is the oldest resturnat, though it was called Al-Ghanim Cafeteria and was exclusively serving al-Ghanim industries workers.

Wimpy is a year younger than mais, its been open since 1954
I think Haroon Risheed opened up in 1964
The oldest cafe in kuwait is the historic bo nashi now known as dar bo nashi

The oldest restaurant in kuwait is a restaurant in Souq Mubarkiya that sells grilled liver, hearts, and home-made laban as well as dates. It was owned by the late Salman Ismaeel Ibrahim. The place is small and modest and has a few articles dating from 1982 which state it is the oldest restaurant.

Yup i went to that one as well when I was little and my dad said the same but can’t seem to find it ever since but apparently it’s still open. The restaurant is tiny and had a newspaper clipping saying that it is the oldest.

Opposite “Haroun Alrasheed” on Fahad Al-Salem street there was a restaurant called “Abu Nawas”. They served shawerma and other Lebanese food. It was there in the 1960s. My guess it was established in the early sixties just like Haroun.

It just occurred to me, Nawarat Al Asli, نوارة الأصلي the famous falafel restaurant was established in the 1960s and it’s still operating. In fact, they’re on Talabat.

Sharaf isnt the oldest restaurant, but it is old. It isnt the first thing that was opened in that location as well. That location used to have another Kuwait first.

The Ali Redha building they are in at one point was considered the tallest building in Kuwait. A few years after the Building was constructed the building regulations changed and allowed taller buildings to be built in Sharq.

The spot Sharaf is in was actually the first supermarket with international goods in Kuwait.

The first restaurant in Kuwait opened in the early 1920s In the Bread Market in Mubarakiya. The Indian owner, Abdulmutalib Abdulmanaf, opened it during the reign of Sheikh Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah. However, the Municipality shut it down in 1940 after rumors about its choices of ‘meat’ went viral. Sadly, these rumors were spread by jealous canteen owners. Their business plummeted due to Abdulmutalib’s success.

Yes you’re right that was opened by my grand dad and his dad. Unfortunately the rumors forced the Kuwaiti Government to close their business.

Mais Alghanim Restaurant considered to be the oldest pne that still in business,
However other restaurants that started in the thirties and forties and some of the biginning of fifties are not in Business anymore,
Haroon Alrashid considered new and not in Business.
Mais is still running by Emil Barakat three Sons.
