Deraya Exploratory Campaign

sensors

I’m sure many of you have noticed strange looking devices similar to the ones above lying all over Kuwait. These devices are part of KOC’s exploratory campaign called Deraya to explore Kuwait’s geological layers. Over 50,000 of these devices have been placed all around Kuwait so that specialized vehicles like the one pictured below can perform seismic surveys.

seismicvibrator

When I first started seeing these trucks rolling up and down the Gulf Road I though they were electric generators but turns out they’re actually seismic vibrators. These trucks drive around Kuwait and stop at various locations to perform seismic vibrations which are then picked up by the sensors.

The aim of this campaign is to study and record data about Kuwait’s different underground layers to form a basis for future studies. KOC have a video explaining the whole process which you can watch above. It’s in Arabic but it’s an animation so you can still figure out whats going on.

Thanks for posting this … i noticed it in two different places and thought my mind was playing tricks on me… “deja vu?”

the wires and gadgets look a bit like a bomb. Glad there’s a scientific reason behind it. 🙂

I thought I felt an earthquake, then saw that big truck passing through the block accompanied by 4 cars with warning signs. I wonder if they will be posting the results once the study is done.

Saw one going down my street in Jabriya – had to take the u-turn and go back to double check what the heck I was seeing! My son said it was a tank! LOL!

Doesn’t “record data about Kuwait’s different underground layers to form a basis for future studies” translate more simply and concisely to, “find out where the oil is”?

Finally! These caused me so much anxiety I wish they were professionally labelled or something… I thought they were bombs. There are larger ones (similar to gas cylinders) by Shuwaikh beach that gave me a panic attack.

Not exactly related, but does anyone know why all the advertisements have been taken off the billboards? only the white lights are on

That’s not correct. All the existing bill boards have been blanked out. Check out the ones on 5th ring and other places too

You just complicated the question. What I’m asking is that why have ALL advertisements been pulled down. If you drive on the 5th ring for instance, you will notice that none of the billboards have anything on it.

Not wanting to drag this, but i still insist you drive down on the 5th ring once and tell me one board that has a hoarding up on it (old or new)

I told you most DON’T having hoardings up because they’re new billboards. I didn’t say there were hoardings on any billboard. 90% of the outdoor ads in Kuwait are currently blank because a new owner took the rights for them and has been installing updated LED based outdoor ads all over kuwait. Not sure why you’re having difficulty understanding that.

“90% of the outdoor ads in Kuwait are currently blank because a new owner took the rights for them and has been installing updated LED based outdoor ads all over kuwait”

This is what you should have replied to my original question in the first place instead of going around in circles!
Read the thread again and realize that it was you who had a problem in understanding

Yes, so you did not tell me about the existing ones being fitted with LED lights (which you seem to have known) and which i was curious about, and instead diverted the question to new billboards, which i was not asking about anyway.

Time out from my side on this topic. Thanks for the replies.
