Pattaya Beach Kuwait City Closed Down

Yesterday I found out the popular Thai restaurant Pattaya Beach closed down their Kuwait City location. I think they had been there since the late 80s so it sucks that it closed down. I drove by their Salmiya location and that turned out to be open but part of the restaurant charm was the Kuwait City location in that old travel agency mall. So many things are changing!

Absolutely true, this case might not necessarialy be related to the 60 year old residency rule

but expect to find a lot of stores closing down both new and old because of the residency rule. I hope there is still a solution for this stupidity and may God grant good health and wisdom to the Amir to intervene.

Most of the old shops are closing due to rent issues. They building owners are demanding full rent/half rent for the months of March, April, May and June. How can they shell out such money at one stretch?

Good day Mark…
From one of your avid followers ….just my 5cents worth here;

Pattaya Kuwait City has a special place in our heart… myself & my wife.
It was our go to place during the 90s when preparing dinner at home was not an option after the long day at the office.
Tom Yum Soup coupled with Beef with Kaylan Vegees on top of Steaming Fresh cooked white rice. plus side order of omelet.
While the better half would have her… Pad Thai Noodles coupled with Beef Garlic Fry.
YUM.
This was prepared by the Kuwait city cook (Priya).
The Salmiya Branch obviously have another cook which may be the reason one of your readers commented that the dishes … ‘were not exactly tasting the same”.
These are the new realities in Kuwait.
These are the “new normal”.
On the bright side… one would like to think these are all a prelude for “better things to come.”
God bless,
Stay safe … ‘ya all./

Thanks, Raymond. Great memories and evokes what some of us have had there. Groups, laughing and enjoying a really nice meal. Don’t have those anymore.

I work in Maliya and so many time I thought of going there but never happened. now sad to say it’s close down and mark wrote about it .It must have been a good place , I will go to salmiya branch

In the 80s I went to Thailand more than 20 times, Pattaya used to be a small fishing town with a few hotels and bars, went to Chiang mai , Chiang rai , Chon buri and took a 20 hr bus trip to Phuket before anyone knew it existed. I never had one Thai meal, the smell and the look of Thai food is extremely repulsive.
I had one rule to my Thai companion, no Thai food in my room.
Some of the soups had bugs in it, As an ingredient I mean.

Traveled to Thailand more than 20 times yet never ate Thai food even once.. If that is not a definition of a wasted trip I do not know what is.. Of course we all know the reason you were there with your “Thai Companion” but to state that Thai food is repulsive and to further state that bugs are a part of Thai cuisine not only shows one’s ignorance but also highlights ones arrogance.

Full disclosure here.. been to Thailand many times myself and have found its cuisines absolutely delightful. Both the eating and companion kind.

On the subject .. I also have very fond memories of the restaurant before all the fancy upscale Thai Restaurants came into the picture; ( Blue Elephant. Ubon etc) when one one mentioned Thai Food only one restaurant would come to mind and that was Pattaya Beach in Kuwait City. It was family run joint that made their food with so much love that you could taste it in their food . I cannot count the times I have eaten there. It was my wife and I ‘s go to place even while we were dating. Good times… Oh well I guess eventually everything must come to an end sometime . I for one am definitely sad to see another part of my past shutting down

Seems like everyday another memory is brushed aside whitewashed over.

Are you sure you’re not looking at a mirror and typing that. I’m sorry to hear about your ‘trip’. Sounds like you were ripped off by your partner. Try a trip with a registered agency in 2020-21, you’ll probably discover you went to some other country 40 yrs back 😉

It just won’t be the same again without Pattaya beach. The food was totally kickass never mind their service. Hand on heart, it was the closest thing we had to Krua Apsorn of Bangkok. Pattaya beach’s is a very tough act to follow for other wannabes.

The passing on of the Pattaya beach rest has in more ways than one taken me into a deep reverie of all good things that came to an end during my time spent in Kuwait.
In no particular order I miss my Barakat Shewerma on Salem Mubarak street as much as I miss my dajjaj sherwerma by Mais Alghanim or the Hunt Room by the Sheraton. It’s such a shame I never quite made it to the chic rooftop place on the KAC building downtown even though I had the chance to. Al Ajami restaurant in Salhia with their Christoffle cutlery and all, was another gem forever lost to the sands of time.

Some things in life are incomparable and while change is the only constant in life you begin to wonder if truly their time had come.

Good bye Pattaya beach! You were the best thing to happen to Thai food outside of Thailand.

I am almost the same vintage as you except my skeletal age is 5 years more than yours : )
I can go on and on about things that I miss from the old Kuwait. Sounds cliched but old is truly gold if not platinum.
