Kuwait in The Facts of Life

This is a short clip from a really old show from the late 70s staring George Clooney. Whats interesting here is that in the clip George Clooney’s character gets a Kuwait Times newspaper delivered to him and he talks about his experience living in Kuwait. Just press play above and it should start at the right moment. [YouTube]

Thanks Hish

Update: The episode above is from 1985

I think Kuwait was on the news back then because of its involvement in the Arab Israeli war and maybe even the Iran-Iraq war..

1) After searching IMDB this is from episode 7.2 (Into the Frying Pan) which was aired 21st September 1985

2) This is just painful to watch and cringeworthy, although sadly not the worst “cameo” Kuwait. That prize goes to Eddie Murphies “Best Defence”, which was just plain insulting, although it eerily foreshadowed Iraq’s invasion of Kuwait.

I remember how ignorant people in the west used to be of the middle east. Having to explain that people don’t live in tents. Unfortunately so many people are still ignorant. Maybe one of the things that made Kuwait such a great place in the 80s was that few people outside knew it existed.

ALrayyes, you are right, but on the other hand, you wouldn’t believe the ignorance we have here. I studied for 5 years there, and yes they are ignoranuses. I prided our community on being much less so, but the facts speak for themselves; we have ignorance on a comparable level. Actually, we might be more ignorant.

So, my point, to sum up, is that since you and I are not ignorant, that doesn’t mean arabs aren’t. So we shouldn’t expect much from them, when we don’t have much to offer anyway.

Arabs are genius compared to the average Americans so don’t even compare them, yes arabs don’t “care” about lot of things but they don’t walk around talking total nonsense like how Americans say we ride camels or live in tents which is untrue, even Europeans mock Americans of having no knowledge of the world outside their American borders

Hmmmmm….well as an “ignorant American”, I’m fairly insulted by all this talk. Personally, I know of no other American who thinks or talks the way you guys are claiming, other than in jest. Another thing, I don’t see near as many Arabs in America doing critical jobs as I see Americans over here. Especially in Kuwait!! Ignorance goes both ways!

Sadly we’re forced to have Americans in our country doing our jobs even though we’re -as Kuwaitis- more qualified than they are. All what Americans have as a plus in comparison to us is experience and how can we get the experience if no one is employing us? We are graduating from more prestigious world class Universities and hold higher degrees in most cases. no luck… and we have a saying for that in Kuwait. But I’ll keep it for me self now.

Not Every Kuwaiti graduates from a world class university.
Not Every Kuwaiti cares about work experience.

Westerners in general tend to start working from an early age and as such many of them get a great deal of work experience by the time they graduate university which makes it easier for them to get the jobs they want.

The stereotype of us Kuwaitis is that we want to get paid more money for doing less work. Da3m il 3amala was something to help out with that so that private companies (which tended not to hire Kuwaitis at all) have more of an incentive to hire them for what they are worth and then lets the government take care of the rest.

We are not FORCED to have Americans in our country doing jobs that we need. They come here legally like everyone else and apply for jobs like everyone else and they get t hem because they have the experience.

Don’t like it? Deal with it.

That’s the point as Kuwaitis we don’t have to “deal with it” we have many other options instead of competing with private companies who want westerns for their own reasons, we have a way of life you can not slave a kuwaity for work (to work 24/7) but many westerns don’t mind because they think of it more like “I’ll do that 5 years, collect lot of money then go back home”

Americans are ignorant there is nothing new here, I’m married to an American woman and studied in the US for 5 years, it doesn’t mean they are bad people it just they have a lot of wrong information and use it as reality

Some of the posters above are calling Americans ignorant.. I’m kinda wondering why?

We had women in black veil back then and we have them now. OK so maybe today is more excessive since we have foreigners living among us from countries that concider this religious part, while in the past it was just cultural thing to cover face when going out to crowded place and taking it off when you’re somewhere else..

but still, the video talked about black veil which we have, talked about deportation which we also have, and talked about causing problems for pulling something off a girls body and that we also have.

I think its kinda funny that an ignorant back in 1985 described something realistic from Kuwait. Something that we still have even in the year 2011.

It’s ignorant in that it shows some nice subtle racism. As a racist stereotype, Akhmed the polygamist goat chasing desert dwelling Arab = Tyrone the fried chicken & watermelon eating, cotton picking African = Ching Chong the dog brain eating automobile crashing Chinaman. In that sense, it’s pretty blatantly ignorant.

loool @ discussions! Just stop right there! Don’t judge the whole country because of some people! There is always a percentage of people in any country who has no idea what is behind his borders!

OMG all the kuwaiti girls that love George Clooney are going to be a bit miffed lol but they’ll still love him 😀

im pretty sure pulling any article of clothing off a girls body anywhere in world would be considered some sort of harassment lol
