Countries by unemployment rate

According to this list Kuwait has a extremely low unemployment figure of 2.2% which is one of lowest unemployment rates in the world. The issue is the figure was last updated in 2004. UAE has an unemployment rate of 12.7% but I think that’s actually low. Thing is I don’t think these numbers for the GCC are accurate because if you don’t have a job here you can’t stay if I am not mistaken. Other interesting numbers, Zimbabwe has the highest unemployment rate which is 90%. Iraq has an unemployment rate of 18% but 83% of the woman in Iraq are unemployed. Thats probably related to the security situation there. Qatar has the third lowest unemployment rate with just 0.6% and in Andorra everyone is employed because they have a 0% unemployment rate. The unemployment rate here is counted in a very questionable method. Actual Central Bank of Kuwait economists use a rate around 21% when devising policy.

Kuwait has a low unemployment rate because 90% of the population are expats who are required to have a job.Kuwaitis are almost guaranteed a job by the government..You also have to look at the size of the population of a certain country.Example USA-Population=+-300 million.Unemployment rate-10%=30 million unemployed / South Africa-Population +-50 million.Unemployment rate-23.5%= +-12 million.

good luck w/ figures coming out from the arab governements….or any government for that matter. its just that some are less bad bad than others

DesertSky: where did you get that 90% of the population is expat in Kuwait. Hello! this is Kuwait not Dubai

“Iraq has an unemployment rate of 18% but 83% of the woman in Iraq are unemployed”. How come?

Assuming that women constitute about 50% of the population, an 83% unemployment rate for women should make the unexployment rate for the country at minimum 41.5% (if all men are employed, which isn’t the actual case). So what is the criteria used for these calculations?

Population is estimated at 3.4m out of which 1.1m are Kuwaitis, so that 32.2% + practically, considerable portion of the Kuwaitis at the Govtm do NOT really work, so, can we add them to the unemployment figures?

This is such a ridiculous comparison.

In Kuwait, the vast majority of the population is employed by the govt. in unproductive jobs. These jobs are created and exist solely to keep people employed.

For instance, the ministry of education is the biggest employer in the country. They have more administrative staff than teachers and school staff. The ministry of health similarly has more administrative staff than doctors and nurses.

There is a big difference between have a productive private sector job and an economically unproductive job created by the govt. for the sake of keeping people in work.

This way you could have 0% unemployment, the govt. could spend oil money hire everyone. But that is meaningless.

Mark,

Please note this point in your post. Otherwise it is a very misleading one.

Thanks.

Nothing is misleading!
i think the government should embark on very strong drive towards “Kuwaitization” of the jobs and hence force the private sector to employ/train/reward Kuwaiti employees. the majority might need intensive training right now and this is fine and can be paid partly by the government. am afraid though that the private sector like everywhere else around the world is too money hungry to care about the well being of the larger socity. This is very hard when you have an interest lobby group called the “Kuwait Chamber of Commerce” and with the top merchant familiese there heading it its totally against their interests to do anything that would put thier monopolies and their profits (largely driven by hiring low cost employees that basically have no protection) at risk!

Even Kuwaitization is a different thing.

This figure is low because the vast majority are hired in economically unproductive govt. ministries. I beleive something like around 90% of the workforce is employed by the govt.

Kuwaitization should be done in the private sector.

Also, Kuwaitization should be done through intensive training and education, not by legally binding companies to hire X percentage Kuwaitis. There is no point if these people don’t do any real work and are hired just because the company is forced to pay them.

Mark,

The unemployment figures are misleading because they suggest that Kuwait has a mighty fine economic situation with no issues whereas it is the complete opposite. Just read my first post and you will know what I mean.

Ed:
The natural tendency for private sector companies to hire the cheaper staff. w/out legally forcing them and enforcing it with penalties; the companies in Kuwait will keep getting workers from outside, especially w/out limits on the visas issued.

That I agree with. But you have to also realize that the people working should also be made productive rather than companies hiring them to meet a legal requirement and getting work done from expats. This can only be done through intensive training, a high quality educational system and a change of attitudes and culture.

Also, this a completely separate point to the one I raised, that of unemployment being kept artificially low by the majority being given unproductive jobs in govt. sector

“if you don’t have a job here you can’t stay if I am not mistaken.”

Yeah that’s the same as every other country. If you’re there on a working visa, you have to have a job.
If you’re just a visitor, you have to be out within a certain period of time.
The only people allowed to stay in the country without a job are nationality holders, the citizens.

Question of the jour, lol. How many government employees does it take to process ur papers?? >>One to stamp, one to sign on top, one to glue a stamp, one to send u up, one to send u down, one to sign again on top, and finally…one to sign below, done!…lol, can’t help but laugh.
