Kuwait, a bustling metropolis

Kuwait number 32

New York Times must have been on something when they came out with this list of “53 Places to go in 2008” because they’ve placed Kuwait in position number 32! We beat places like Las Vegas, New York and London, thats just insane! [Link]

Thanks S!

I doubt that list is in order. I think its a random collection.

Because, in the current scenario… I doubt an American (or any NY Times reader) would prefer IRAN (18) over US cities like San Fran (39), Las Vegas (50) and NY (53).

Maybe they just want to say “People, try something new this time! You may or may not regret spending all your money to go there, but whats more exciting than an air of surprise!”

And Iran? I thought US has no diplomatic relations with Iran. Can americans go there?

Kuwait with its down side… still the greatest to live in 🙂

The other countries are worth visiting & just visiting

Maybe they meant Top 53 Places to go In…sane :p
Seriously though, Kuwait is finally booming (real estate wise). If I wasn’t from Kuwait, I’d want to visit this place. It’s slowly catching up with Dubai, minus the booze and prostitutes.

We got beaten by Mozambique (31) … danm!

:p

I agree with Salah though..

It’s 53 places to go.. NOT the “TOP” 53 places to go to! o it is kind of a random suggestions… I think

the numbers do not mean anything,,
go further in the site and you’ll see editor’s recommendations
and also other people recommendations,,
nice list though… wish i could,,

If the numbers do me something or not it still doesn’t take away from the fact that Kuwait was chosen as a place to go in 2008 beating a lot of other places.

MYK… Kuwait is competing with Dubai?? It’s not only the NYT that is on crack. Did you know that Kuwait gets less foreign direct investment than the Palestinian territories? (not that we need it)

Moayad, i hear Mozambique is the next cool place to go that few people truly know about. Amazing beaches and some Portuguese heritage.

A E R O, I meant real estate wise and I said slowly catching up. Where were once light years ahead then Dubai out of nowhere exploded onto the world map. I’m not saying we will ever be like them, but I see new buildings everyday and a few 100 floor buildings are already being built. I’m one of the few that sees the glass half full.

COOL!

Right, we have places and things that makes visitors love it! Especially who likes to know about other cultures 🙂 They love Museums and Mubarkaya, we don’t, as we live here.

Its cool walla that we reached NYT 😀

53 places! They were forced to come up with something more realistic than visiting Mars.

Kuwait is great. That’s why we’re here.

Why aren’t you all taking pride in this positive promotion (one for a change from the typical oil prices, women-rights, asian maids, war-related stories)

I would imagine that in any other city, the natives would be cheering the news; even longtime expats should not find this news strange (otherwise why did they decide to remain in Kuwait!!)

My job allowed me the chance to host and tour Kuwait with LA, Houston, NYC Americans, British, French, Danish businessmen and women. They were every bit as intrigued and fascinated by Kuwait as any other place they’ve been.

Try to show a little enthusiasm for your home, or just Shut up …

It’s just 53 places – as in a new place each week of the year

Mark, don’t you read ANY arabic at all? Just catch the post headlines next time and decide if you want to read or not

is it just me or is anyone else a bit angry that they put women in niqabs as a focal point this is just going to make people think that all women here dress like that ( when they really don’t) .. they probably aren’t even Kuwaiti..
its cool that we are on the list, but people here in the states already think that all middle eastern women wear that..

i perfectly agree with all you people there, they have lost all their sanity. By doing this what are they trying to prove or maybe they are trying to appease a particular class of people

I have a tiny bone to pick up with M and his assertion on women in niqabs. In a post liberation Kuwait majority of local women appear wearing niqabs. Who else could the women in the picture be? Lebanese Christian women living in Kuwait, I suppose ? In fact, shortly after the anti-modernists rose to power in Kuwait’s watered down version of the House of Commons, one could almost sniff what has now come to be popularly known in society circles as ” the Walya Tubtubby effect on women’s fashion & dressing senses in Kuwait.” The head scarves just got a tad tighter and teenyboppers hitting the fashion runways( and just as importantly, on all the bronzed toned bodies of men), which are the malls on a weekend in downtown Kuwait decided to come out in all their finery wearing colourful duvets and quilts atop their heads. Everytime the liberals managed to get a word in sideways, the asphyxiating head scarves became much less so (for the end user ) allowing them a flash in the pan taste of independence, freedom and a life without anti-modernists imposed encumberances.

Since i am a portuguese living in kuwait i was happely surprised to see kuwait in the 32 place, right next to mozambique, a portuguese ex-colony. but when i saw the complete list, i was overwhelmed with joy when i saw lisbon, the portuguese capital in the 2 place!
well, i think this ranking was made basing on the magnificent experiences that people can have in each place of the list, experiences through the people, landscape, enterteinment, escaping to some piece of paradise or even culturally!
