Safat Square Shops

All the shops that are located under the streets adjacent to Safat Square have now been closed down. The shops used to sell random items from counterfeit perfumes with funny names to cheap toys and clothes. I always thought the shops didn’t fit very nicely with the location and it looks like they’ve now been closed down as part of the renovation process Safat Square will be undergoing.

Safat Square is actually surrounded by fences at the moment which I thought were set up because the construction work was going to begin but turns out the fences are there because of the demonstrations that have been taking place.

On a happier note the demonstrations actually have 2 sides! Lol.

There were both pro and anti government people there, and I think Kuwaiti sentiment really does split between the two unlike in some of the other protests where it’s 99% obvious who the people support.

And with this post… Mark sets a perfect example of what “Living under a rock” truly means!!

KC has been run down for ages, another reason to question this government. The youth do deserve a future with a development path like other GCC nations have been on for decades.

better youth development ? You qualify for a scholarship by maintaining a 3.0 GPA. its not that tough to get a 3.0.

I am kuwaiti and i dont know why kuwaiti’s even bother demonstrating against the government, the only people in the world that are spoiled from birth till they die are kuwaitis… i know there are things that must be changed and yes Yepyep we really do need doers more but demonstrating is not the way to do it… God help us all and keep kuwait safe…

This is my take on it too. I’ll support the government that gave me 1000KD, that gives me a salary every month for working in the private sector, that gives me money for getting married, that paid for my university, that gave me a salary for going to university, that paid for my crutches when I broke my leg, that paid for my hospital bill when I was born.

What did parliament do for me? Vote to double their salaries?

I agree. We are a spoiled population. Demonstration should not take place at all, we should put more fences to stop them. Dont let anyone voice their opinion or talk or criticize the gov’t, then again, they got 1000KD so they kind of got “paid off”. As a matter a fact, shoot anyone who dares to content with the authority by peacefully protesting!

I hope people get the humble sarcasm in my post.

So Kuwait is suddenly on Syria or Libya levels? Do you see the army here bringing out tanks and planes to kill us, its own citizens? Libya is a country with a rich leader and poor, oppressed people. Kuwait is a rich country that spreads the wealth to the people. There are problems sure but for people to even TRY to compare themselves to the Arab revolutions – just the fact that we have a parliament that is allowed to disagree with the government is proof enough that Kuwait is a thousand times luckier than almost every other arab country. These people should be thanking God they were born Kuwaiti – other countries can complain about misuse of public funds because those are taxes they paid. We don’t even pay taxes! We are complaining that money that ISN’T OURS is being spent on stuff we don’t like!

I once read an article about Safat Square – the way it was constructed and I remember there was something special about the mosaic/ artwork in the underpass. It was in a very old edition of the KOC magazine.
