Once upon a time this was the ONLY place you could buy a book. Remember? Remember the old Sikh guy with the turban?I loved to visit here on a Thursday morning- then nip over to BHS and later Next- followed by a milkshake in Hardees on the corner. Mashallah it was all we had in those days and we thought it was great…

I would like to connect with you guys.. because I used to frequent this store for Archie comic and Nancy drew and hardy boys weekly haul..I used to devour those books , this is pre-Gulf War era. I am in New York now.
Please anybody who wants to reconnect?

WoW Mark you just reminded me of the old days man…
i still remember when i used to buy my old comic books from there… come to think about it, i still have them boxed and safe in the basement, i think i should check them out and introduce my kids old class Marvel & DC…

I’m surprised (and GLAD) that they are still there. I’m sure they’ll pick up again once they redo the rest of the areas (isn’t that the plan?). I was asking the current guy there where they would relocate too with all the tearing up happening around and he just smiled and said they’d still be in the same place. They have been true to their word! Yeah that’s one place from an era – and it isn’t gone yet!

Man I feel so bad for that place! I remember buying all my books from there when I was young! I remember buying a huge Atlas! Its sad what has happened to bookstores over the years! They have been strangled to death!

i always wished you would do a feature on Family Book store….they are now like the old photographer…

Brings back childhood memories as I take my son for a walk and drop in for some odd comics as my father used to do.
Their collection is not much but I drop by there often just for old times sake and they give me a call as soon as my regular mags arrive.

I used to buy my Asterix, tin tins and archies from over there and used to get all my old GCSE book from there, the end of an era. Lets hope someone opens a barnes and noble or a borders just like the states.

I remember going to their original location in the city opposite Souk Watiya with my folks to buy books for school.. my dad used to take me there every other weekend to reward me with Archie and Tin Tin comics for getting A’s or B’s in school. This was always followed by a shawerma and cocktail from the adjoining restaurant ..sigh memories. Well now my daughter has Jarir hopefully she will have fond memories of it when they become extinct 20 years down the road 🙂

Family bookshop brings back lots of beautiful memories. I used to love taking my children there. Most of the childrens’ books and comics they got, were from Family Bookshop. They used to have a great time looking at books and selecting books. A beautiful place to be at one time…and now it looks so empty and abandoned.

They are currently going thru a lawsuit themselves coz the owners of the building tore down the rest of the place, Family Bookshop sort of ran out of business. They paying rent in the court until a judgement or settlement is reached. Its a big chain and is now being supported by the parent company.
