Internet Prices at InfoConnect 2015

wimd

I passed by InfoConnect earlier today to check out the internet prices and I’m not sure why but the prices have started increasing instead of decreasing. For example two years ago 10Mbps would have cost you KD140 while this year it’s going to cost you KD165. Check out the prices for the annual subscriptions below. Most of the providers were offering some sort of gift be it scratch and win cards or free speed upgrades etc..

The Exhibition is as usual getting worse year by year …and this year is by far the worst one i have been to. None of the Big telecommunication companies viva, ooreedo or zain are even part of it. There was nothing appealing and prices are the same as most places. You could literally finish the exhibition in 15mins

overall: Disappointed

i visited it once many years ago and didn’t find it interesting. A stroll on ibn khaldun street + websites of viva, ooredoo&zain are more enjoyable and beneficial.

I paid KD 38 for 14 Months Last Year for 2MBPS from Kems and this Year i see no offer and it is the same price in there website like everyday KD 61. So it is a totally waste to Visit the Infoconnect.

And like every year havent seen any emails from Vendors Particpating in InforConnect like every year. I guess the marketing Budjets for the companies are cut down.

My advice, wait for the last day. Every year early adopters get ripped off when they offer better deals at the last day.

Aha alright. Still based on what they are showing here it’s gonna be like, 20KD off of a still expensive connection

How did you manage to get that price? last year i paid 99 kd for 14 mb Qnet but this year for that price i can get a 4 mb. Kuwait is expensive compared to othereuropean countries back home i am paying for 100mb/s cable and tel line all for approx 10 kwd

I paid the same amount, 120KD for 15MBPS – he told me I was on the ‘fast jet’ package from last year (can’t remember the name) and renewed my package from last year.

This.

I guess I managed a great deal last year on the ‘Jet Net’ package. They just renewed it and the price remained the same, although I was hoping for a lesser price – as should be the trend!

One thing is very clear having a glance at Mark’s table and my visit to renew my KEMS line today: ISPs have colluded to set the EXACT same price. Zero competition, customer loses, ISP wins.

But hey, at least you’ve got a bag full of mousepads, pens and keychains…

Remember to sharpen your nails before visiting. You may wish to scratch your ISP’s representative really hard to get the best offer. Scratch and win is all that is on.

well this is what happens when the companies get together to unify the prices, it defeats the idea of a free market

In addition to the above – there are some pretty decent gifts and unlisted offers

Qnet: 12MB for 156 KWD (discount for renewal)
-35KWD voucher for electronics (I added 15KD and got a synology DS214se)
-10% cash back (won from a scratch/win)
-3 months extra bandwidth (won from a scratch/win)

Zajil: 15MB for 120 KWD (Something about renewing a fastjet package)
-Two months additional for free (won from a scratch/win)

Fasttelco: 12 MBPS for 146 KWD (I think it was discounted based on previous balance)
-Roaming sim card with 1GB data for 40+ countries – one year validity (won from a scratch/win)

What is the fastest, and better service Internet provider I’m definitely not paying for WiMd but so far thinking about KEMS cuz they are super fast. I’m now with viva AND HATE IT.

Depends on your area. Some areas can’t handle the faster speeds from the land-based ISPs so WIMD or a telecom becomes your only choice.

Not only the prices were raised… they are fixed, which should be a crime!

In last year’s Infoconnect I managed to renew my 10MB with FT for 96KD (with a an extra free month) after some haggling (yes you should haggle, which is a disgrace!). Needless to say it is today 165KD, and yes… 145KD after a little haggle!

What’s next? Back to capped connection?!

It’s like 2011 all over again!

Like all competitions in Kuwait, the hamours sit together in a diwaniya and agree to have unified prices so they all have an equal share and a steady stream of dinars.

Also, we should have a slang term for Kuwaiti Dinars.

I can’t speak for the other providers but if you are with KEMS you can renew your subscription at last years offer prices, I renewed my “jet net” package 50mb for 230KD, and I didn’t even have to go, they sent their Mandoob complete with a knet machine and scratch cards right to my house.

when my homeline can only hold 1.5mbps (Jabriya) I’m bounded with WIMD. Really it’s 2015 and telecommunication infrastructure is not even a priority in Kuwait, what a joke. I don’t see a need for such facade expo acting as just another point of sale for ISP with no other benefits or options for consumers.

are all these wireless 4g?

I will never buy from Kems I have been here a long time when they were the only internet in country and they screwed us on the poor service and VERY VERY high prices boycott KEMS!

Qualitynet has this slogan on their website

” Because you deserve more”

I wonder what they mean because it is definitely not internet speeds.

Alternatives are

We are increasing prices because you deserve more ***

The lag has gone up because you deserve more ****

Bandwidth cap is coming because you deserve more ***

I visited yesterday, I’m a Fasttelco subscriber for 9 years now the above mentioned prices are for new subscribers.
I have a 12mb subscription from last year (upto what your line supports) although mine supports 12mb they decreased the speed to 10 again.
I asked for 10mb renewal it is 146 kd and they will give 5mb more so it will be 15mb for that price, but again they will say your line supports only 10mb.

so does this mean that you pay the same price you subscribed last year? I had the 4mb line for 38KD from Fasttelco, that is at my parents house, i moved to a new place where i joined Qualitynet (last june) and was hoping to use the fair to get better deals on speeds.

i guess we just have to go there and see whats what.
thanks for posting the info tho mark, top notch

What use is 100 mb connection if 75% of the internet is censored?!

Do they expect us to pay that much to use twitter and rant about politics on forums? We want to stream videos, watch porn, play games, look at arts, visit College Humor ,… for **** sake we are humans not angles you idealist bastards.

Since there are many wise men on this forum. Here is a question which has eluded me

” Why isn’t there fibre and gigabit speeds for every home in Kuwait”

It can’t be money or project management skills (just hire the Bechtels of the world).

Why can’t Kuwait be the next South Korea in terms of internet speeds.

Hey, if not anything, invite Google to come in and adopt Kuwait as the first middle east city for their fibre roll out.

Its because the telecoms industry is highly regulated and it is not privatized. Pricing is arbitrary, and infrastructure projects are slow to get off the ground due to the normal bureaucratic red tape.

They are starting the process to free the telecom industry – the first step would be an independent telecom regulator.

However, there is hope – the FTTH (Fiber To The Home) project is well underway, but the ministry of communications has to upgrade their internal infrastructure (and procedures) to provide the last mile connectivity.

So, fiber Internet is coming across Kuwait.

Pricing will not go down until the TRA comes on board and there are competing outbound bandwidth providers (not just the FOG cable).

FOG = Fiber Optic Gulf : https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_international_submarine_communications_cables#F

Google won’t come here because the government will not allow it. You cannot have every company laying down their own cables – the backbone infrastructure cannot take it; and of course Google won’t want to lease the existing (crappy) lines.

Thanks Burhan..

The policy makers should be thinking and getting worried about the internet competitiveness of Kuwait.

Overall its a sorry excuse for an exhibition. Went there yesterday to renew my QNet subscription.

They are giving some minor discounts depending on your loyalty level (gold, silver, etc.). So for 6mb, instead of paying KD.122, I paid KD.101 after they gave me the discount and adjusted the 3 months that were still available on my subscription. I’d paid KD.45 last year for an 8mb connection!

Additionally, they are also giving scratch cards where I won the next speed upgrade for a full, whole, complete month!

Finally, you get a KD.20 or KD.30 cash voucher (depending on which speed you take) which can be used to purchase stuff from their store (routers, network devices and accessories). They had run out of most of the stuff but promised to bring back some by today (yippee! I get to visit them again).

Qualitynet is getting worst especially after the total takeover of Batelco. Bad online experience overall and they secretly do daily bandwidth quotas on ADSL users but not Fiber users (to market Fiber connections). ADSL is useless for online gaming even with their Gaming package.

I would only rated as the best of the worst ISP. Zain is doing better if you want speed. But still bad for gaming 🙁

Anyone 2Mbps and below plz take notice. You won’t hit 300GB, better sense plz avail 4G. 300GB schemes as it suits you, that is the only way to push DSL/GPoN to come out better Laggards won’t improve till you won’t quit them.

Nothing on Gulfnet, they asked me to renew my 2Mbps line for 58KD plus a scratch coupon with guaranteed prize of minimum 2 months free on it. Other prizes also, lyk free upgrade and stuff(I get about 1.8Mbps only). Not worth it unless you want to use them as your secondary connection. Going for Viva 18KD PM … 10GB daily and slow after that, other option Zain 300GB use as you want 19KD but 24 month commitment sux.

Another point to note, no need to hang on to your phone line while waiting for fibre. They will come knocking on your door when it arrives to cut their own costs.

Try ooreedoo. They have 4g, 100gb per month for 10kd… you have to pay 2 months payment in advance but its worth for what you are paying to them… even if 4-5 ppl using at the same time most of the time your speed will be morethan 12mbps depends on your location. .

Yes! That’s on my mind too, if I retain my DSL. Will use 4g as booster and have that night pack also looked in.

What’s the best Internet provider as of right now?
I heard that Fiber (GPON) connection is great, but requires me to pay 2000-3000 kd to the government to have it activated in my household. Is that entirely correct? If so, what are the best normal Internet servies and subscriptions? I’m thinking 6-10 mb, pay every 3-6 months, with unlimited downloads. Also, consistent Internet (no disconnections) is a requirement for me.

And this year (just few days ago) I checked with FT and the prices are even higher!

I think Kuwait is the only place in the entire world where internet prices are increasing year after year while the quality and reliability of the service is going down hill.

Mark, you should write an article about this. My internet service expired few days ago and I refuse to pay the ridiculous prices they’re offering us right now. I am so shocked to realize that this is the norm nowadays!!!!
