New Lower Internet Prices

The Ministry of Communications has set new maximum prices for various DSL speeds and as of now Qualitynet and KEMS have both updated their prices online to reflect the change. According to a person I spoke to at Fasttelco, they have yet to finalize their prices but it will most likely be very similar to Qualitynet and KEMS.

mm…my ISP tells me I cant get more than 1 Mbps at my apartment, because the lines are bad! – guess this is of no use to me!

I tried the Mada device and the coverage was …hmmmm!! and WiMD residential starts at 6 Mbps – not much of a choice there either..

Actually I found that it’s the other way around. I don’t personally have a WiMD subscription but have tried it in three different places; all of them have been through problems. A problem with internal networking happened to all of them (you call them and they change the routers and repeaters). Some have had issues with extremely slow connections at certain times during the day. The worst part is if you need to have technicians sent over you’re going to have to wait for a week until they actually show up.

Which brings me to Mada. They don’t even have the option of sending technicians to your residence, you have to physically go every time you have a HARDWARE problem. I did not have any major problem with Mada, though. Most of the issues I get is slow internet connection and they usually fix it over the phone.

Now the thing is that WiMD supposedly works anywhere in Kuwait. With Mada you have to see if your residence has coverage. (and it literally means that one side of your house can have good connection and you won’t be able to get a connection on the other side.) One important reason why I prefer Mada is its portability. All you need is a wall plug. That’s a huge plus for me.

Lol 🙂 I guess you never tried Mada in last months 🙂 Because if you will try current Mada with 500-900kbps speed on maximum signal strength (instead of promised 10mbps) you never recommend it to someone else 🙂

P.S. Yes I know it’s “up to 10mbps”, but trust me I never had speed more than 1mbps in last months 🙁

I have noticed that EVERY time they REDUCE DSL prices the SERVICE quality also DECLINES with it.

I paid about 94 KD for a 1.5 connection a month back. and was getting pissed that I missed out on this. Then I get a msg from KEMS this morning sayinh that they upgraded my connection to 3 Mbps.

Thats what I call customer courtesy. They didnt have to do that since I was already tied down for a one year contract. Thank u MOC Thank you KEMS.

I’m well pissed off because I also paid 95KD for 1.5Mbps with Qualitynet.
haven’t heard a dicky bird from them. Tried to ring them, first I was cut off, second stopped in mid-sentence and put on hold, third told to phone head office. called head office – it’s shut!! 4pm!! FFS!!
Been ripped off to the tune of 38KD.
And don’t tell me that it’s my problem. I’d signed a contract etc.. They knew this was going to happen, it’s like betting on a horse race when you already know the result. They withheld information.
Insider trading fraudsters do this.

Why cant govt push ZAIN-VIVA-WATANIYA to bring down the calling rate, sms charges, as compared to other countries they are charging way to high.
mobile should be the cheapest means of communication. before viva entered market , zain-wataniya were charging for incoming also.
Why not they allow more mobile carriers , specially from india, like airtel,reliance, i am sure there will be very good competition and public will get very very cheap rates

well then why ministry allowed free incoming only after viva entered the market?

comparing to mobile usage in india, its way way to high here.
if ministry sets the price, than why ministry is allowing these companies to make millions of kd at the cost of people?

In Bahrain, you can call India for 70 minutes for 1 BD. I bought a calling card from the airport. I doubt people in Bahrain have less money in general compared to India.

well aaa, the question is not that people in india have less money, i guess there are ambanis, mittal, tata,in the high profile , but the main population of india is madeup of middleclass people who can afford mobile, car, 3bhk.

the point here is of best of competition. I remember reading one article from the interview of Late Mr Dhirubhai Ambani, he said ” i want to make mobile communication more cheaper than a postcard “, which he did.

Here Zain in the initial years was the only provider, than came Wataniya and at a very later stage Viva entered, there was never tough competition.
Before Viva came, Reliance also tried to enter but was rejected.

Here also there can be good healthy competition if ministry allow more mobile carriers

The point is that, its not the question of people have money or not, demand or supply, but if there will be more companies in market surely there will be cheaper rates.

Incorrect. Prices are low because there is more competition (India has a minimum of 5 telecom operators in any state) and each of them has to struggle to maintain their hold in the market.Making the calling rates cheap and exciting.

Bunch of lies Mark. I worked two years for one of the telecom operators mentioned by yourself and as a technical rating/pricing team.

Most of the rates come from the marketing department after they get approval from all departments and division, the ministry have no say on this.

From what i am aware ALL communication HAS to go through the MOC which is why the international call prices are high and why companies like Zain can’t put Kuwait in their regional one network.

Thats wat we need here, competition, as viva did while entering market incoming free, following that zain, wataniya had to do. repeat such things in other services , per call / msg charges surely people will benefit so wil the company if they manage to more customers

Internet prices in Kuwait are very reasonable and as far as i know the cheapest in GCC and in reach of everyone + the Gov has increased Kuwait’s bandwidth capacity significantly recently, Lets all hope the halt of the parliament remains for few more month so many good things are in the works…

Whilst this is great in some aspects, there is something much more concerning here. Constantly amongst many different industries/sectors the government is involving themselves with the private doings of private businesses.

Whilst the prices were astronomically high, honestly there really shouldnt be a ground for government interception. I think it is high time that private companies are able to set their own prices and conduct businesses as if they were actually in the private sector. No wonder so many big companies are escaping to establish in other GCC countries.

If there was real competition rather than price setting in general (as the law doesn’t prevent this around here), I’d agree.

What does that have to do with anything? The prices are much better than they used to be, but just as a comparison, in the UK, Virgin internet offers 100Mb at about 12Kd/month. Do Kuwaiti prices sound so reasonable to you now? Kuwait could take a big step forward by making a concerted effort to lay down cable throughout the city. The current telephone lines are a bottleneck. Even if you wanted the top speeds these providers offer, I suspect a lot of people’s lines wouldn’t be able to cope. I know mine can’t.

I personally recommend KEMS.. However the quality of the service will depend on where you live. When it comes to customer service I believe KEMS and FastTelco are both very good. You should get a technician from all companies to come and see how fast of a connection you can get from each of the ISPs..

If you need very fast internet on the other hand I recommend getting then Zain Advanced Router (which works on LTE technology). It might be more volatile than land line connection, but it gives you an average of around 26Mbps on speedtest.net
