10Mbps with WiMD

After trying out WiMD with unlimited speed I finally had to decide on what connection I was going to subscribe to and I decided to go with the 10Mbps. I originally wanted to go with 15Mbps but decided KD72 a month is more than what I was willing to pay. 10Mbps is KD523 a year which works out to KD43.5 a month and to me is a much more reasonable amount.

I’ve had this connection for 2 days now which is enough time to get a first impression. Browsing is still super fast and I managed to download torrents at speeds of around 1.3MB/s to 1.5MB/s which is pretty fast. I imagine with a 15Mbps connection you would get around 2MB/s to 2.3MB/s speeds. The best part is that even if I’m downloading torrents at full speed it doesn’t hinder my browsing experience. Not sure how that is possible but with all my previous connections I always had to limit my torrents download speed so I could still have some bandwidth left to browse with. With WiMD on the other hand I’ve got my torrents set to download at full speed and I browse with no slowdown.

Below are speedtest results. This isn’t very accurate because for example you have various speedtest servers in London and when testing one would give me a very low ping rate of under a 100 but the download rate would be around 4Mbps while another would give me a higher ping rate in the 300’s but with a higher download speed. Thats why I decided I would perform the test on all the servers and post the ones with the highest download speeds.

I really hope the connection doesn’t suffer in the long run once more and more users sign up. That’s actually my only concern but I’ll post an update 6 months down the line and let you guys now how things turned out. If you want to get a second opinion Marzouq over at zDistrict just signed up to a 20Mbps connection and posted about it [Here]

Qualitynet is one of their sources, they also have leased lines from Fasttelco, Gulfnet and Zajil. Whenever one of the providers is congested their system is smart enough to shift the balance over to the others.

Dear SDLovely, We have a tie up with all the ISP’s except Fast Telco and we buy bandwidth through all the other 3.

Our customer traffic is segmented on all the links we have with the 3 ISP’s. So, need not worry if your experience with a certain ISP has been bad. We have a mixed environment, delivering the best to the end user.

Wait this made me realize something, if you use all 3 ISP’s, every single one differs when it comes to pings on certain servers. Sometimes Qnet gets better pings, sometimes Kems does. So assuming you guys segment your customers to different ISPs, I could wake up one morning and be on a connection similar to that of Qnet and the next be on a connection similar to Kems?

What happened to mada? Was the speed not good, as I thought you were supposed to get upto 10MB for around 20KD per month?

10Mbps from Mada is slower and less consistent than 10Mbps from WiMD. But the real test will be 6 months down the line, will WiMD still be this good then? We’ll see.

I am worried about the same thing, that’s why I didn’t jump on it instantly. Unless they add a monthly plan I won’t be thinking of subscribing until my dsl sub runs out. Hopefully by then we will see how they handle more users. Mark I expect you to give us an update in a few more months?

remind me in june to post an update. I figured now is the best time to jump on this since they just started and its going to be fast. It seems they’re getting a lot of subscribers now because a friend of mine called them up and they told him they can come and install it in 2 weeks time.

Looks great I’m hoping to be able to subscribe to the 8MB if I get a strong signal can’t wait until my site survey visit I am suffocated by Qualitynet and Mada is not that stable but helps most of the times.

You are kidding me !! I pay the equivalent of 20 KD per month here in Manchester for 100 Mbps internet (It will be increased to 120 Mbps for free very soon ) Torrents currently download at 12.2 MB/s i.e it takes around 2 Minutes or less to download a 1.6 GB movie, craaaazyyy

I like the pings but am still skeptical about gaming over wireless, which is the primary reason I would switch. Is there any chance of seeing some continuous ping data (-t) or tracerts to EU servers?

Any update on the performance during the recent bad weather. It’s been pretty dusty and even a little rain, and I was curious if you are seeing any drop off in speeds or signal quality.
Thank you.

Well two days ago here in Jahra visibility was down to about 100 Meters. It feels like humidity has been up as well, plus we have had a little rain.
I take it you are still getting the same signal strength and quality?
