Fight at The Avenues.. again

Spotted the video above on the His&Hers blog. Fights at the Avenues isn’t anything new but watching the video above you kinda wonder where is security? With the amount of fights that take place there I would have cops stationed all around on weekends. [YouTube]

I find it incredible how so many people are just standing there watching them fight. These are times where you’re meant to stand up and stop the wrong right in front of you. A lot of people just stood there and watched. I like the guys on the lower right corner who were actually doing something and broke one of them up. Shows you who really won’t stand for something if its wrong.

it’s a normal reaction. when a fight breaks out people don’t usually interfere. have you seen the episode of Seinfeld when they stand and witness a mugging?

Yeah haha! But still, it’s pretty disgusting that people aren’t able to stand up for it. We should be teaching citizens to stand up for what’s right and stop whatever wrong they see in front of them. Hard concept to teach but its necessary to change the world for sure! This fight is a small example of the big issues that are going on in the world that require a voice but aren’t getting one!

Never interfere in a fight, you don’t know or understand the circumstances and you don’t how quickly things can turn against you. Just let it be , keep your head down and walk away.

no, seriously in Kuwait you can get hurt interfering in a fight, acting the hero only works in Hollywood, as i said you don’t know the circumstances for all you know both fighters can make up at your expense and turn on you.
My brothers friend is a gym fanatic big burly muscular dude , he was jogging on Gulf road when he spotted 3 teens hitting and harrasing a girl, well he said “this is what i go to the gym for let me save the damsel in distres” He ended being rushed to the ER with a screw driver shove between right between the shoulder. Ppl in kuwait have nothing to lose, we have wasta, and all other sorts of ways to get out of trouble, so ppl don’t mind getting into fights.

That in itself then needs to be dealt with in society. Unfortunately there is so many horrible things going on everywhere and nothing is being done about them. It’s a sad reality we live in.

There may be people who have the intention but not the ability and stregth to interfer, or there are people that wil go in shock to see tge scene and not believing what their eyes are seeing (i think i’ll be one of those to be frozen in shock at the scene). We are come from there is a lot of awareness of social problems & institutions for the purpose, for instance rehabilitation centers for any type of adiction, 10 yrs ago talks about premarital sex we offer at medical centers for young couples who voluntarily attended; now those same centers are going to the schools to the 12-15 yrs students to talk about the same subject… Has any of these measures helped deacresing adictions or pregnancy among teens and abortions?

You know what the problem is? its fudging boring in kuwait. At this age you see boys going out getting entertained by fights.. They look like high schoolers if not younger. Our culture and the way life is there is the reason behind such things happening. We really live in a depressing place. Same fudging pattern every week. Work, Shailah, 7adra. Work, Shailah, 7adra.

Then change it. Demand your society becomes more liveable. Kuwaiti families have to fly to Dubai to really enjoy their life and that is fudging ridiculous.

no, theres lots to do in Kuwait, when i was a kid me and my friends would play basketball and football, play on the playstation (thats back when we only had PSX not PS3 and Xbox 360), we’de go swimming in the beach or visit one of kuwaits Islands with my dad on his boat, theres LOTS to do.

The problem is with the machismo “ana rayal” that kids wanna act like. In out society we glorify violence, think about it violence in movies isn’t cut yet kissing is??? We take our kids to see action movies and we keep on telling them to ‘9eer rayal, ethgel’ and offcourse the ‘haaaa 9eer rayal lat5alee yema95erek chithi enta weld flaaan’ all that leads to that fight in the Avenues, which probably over a stupid comment.

Remember the food here is ‘Womenizing or male-chasing’ – Fighting (Even those 99% have no heart to fight but scream like a girl in public to get attention) racing and killing people on the streets (Basically terrorizing). 🙂

Wow I love to criticize! Thanks to all blogs.

i honestly dont belive the number of young kids hanging out in the mall, how can their families just leave them like this!!!! it unblievable, just go to 360 and youll get the pic.

It is sad to see kids fight like this, but it is also sad that: there are no serious youth development programs, parents need to be taught how to take care of their kids, and there are no serious punishments for such acts in public.

The interesting thing is that the person who is recording this fight knew about it before it started ! so this is the type we used to have long time ago in school, when guys plan to have a fight outside the school 🙂

Maybe what we need some program (like the one i saw in Jordan a week ago) called “shabab against violence”

no point having cops.
cops here are a disgrace

most are put patrolling at marina crescent

it’s useless though because they haven’t stopped not even one fight

an example would be my friend was getting beat by 14 guys because he was blonde and he was lebanese walking on the beach.
disgrace
where was i? punched in the eye trying to stop the idiotic fight
where were the police when another friend called them? looked at the fight, then walked off.
DISGRACE

I would believe him. Most young people here are insane, crazy, maniacs and terrorize people. They even get their damn motherbikes into the walking area of Marina. They are full of shit, nonsense, crap and all the other stupid words you can find on this planet.

This is you, yes you all. Sorry but I will be judgemental.

this is what i said when i saw a cop car pulling in 3, 18 year olds in the hospital all drunk at 2AM, in the US btw.

Teens are teens, they come with the attitude weather in the US or Kuwait.

they’re teenagers with angst, show me a teenager who doesn’t have a chip on his shoulder, stop being so holier than thou.

That seriously has to stop and children smoking it’s getting disgraceful that a family can’t go out on a Thursday or Friday night because of these people. They are also giving a misleading about other teenagers that don’t smoke or fight. It’s irritating walking into a shop and employees stare at you because they think we are gangstas or taxis not accepting to drive us to a certain place because they are scared we will beat them and not pay. NOT ALL TEENAGERS ARE LIKE THIS!

guys when I was a kid we didn’t have malls or restaurants here. We couldn’t even get into Sultan Center because it was “families only” on weekends. Seriously back then there was nothing to do except spend time at each others houses and hangout at the Hardees that was located were Starbucks is right now in front of Fanar. Then one day they opened up fuddruckers and that became the hangout place until Johnny Rockets opened up their first branch.

Kids today are spoiled with things to do.

Kids need hobbies…

I cannot stress enough the importance of having a hobby..

When I was a kid my parents forced my brothers and I to participate in every kind of sport you can think of! We literally had no time to get in trouble, because we’d be either in school all day or training in sport centres.

I think we need a hobby awareness campaign in Kuwait.

Pathetic security by Avenues. Did anyone else notice the security guard that walked into the middle of the fight and was busy checking his cell phone instead of getting involved?

Avenues–once again…you’ve built a great mall, but you need to IMPROVE SECURITY!!
This was a harmless fight between kids but you never know when older boys and men can get involved thereby creating a ruckus.

Things to do in Kuwait (for teenagers):
1-Cafés? Check!
2-Malls? Check!
3-All types of sport? Check!
4-Restaurants? Check!
5-Public libraries? Check!
6-Resorts? Check!
7-Museums? Check!
8-artistic & cultural activities? Check!
9-Volunteering? Check!
Yet, kids claim there is nothing to do in Kuwait.

What about clubbing? Parties? How about cinemas that do not overcharge you? BTW are you seriously asking Kuwaiti teenagers to go to museums and Libraries? Those are the same kids that get taught the worst manners from their parents and skip school.

I agree with Mark! Back when we were kids, there was nothing to do than hanging out with friends & family, go to Hungry Bunny, Fuddruckers, play Atari, Sakhar Computer, Sega & Super Nintendo, or going to the beach. The funny thing is thst we enjoyed our youth & turned out well & law abiding citizens. Kids today are spoon fed everything we didn’t have & are not even half as good as our generation. I still blame some of the parents for not raising their children well. They lack the proper manners! Fights happen everywhere, but not over stupid things like “who are you staring at?” reasons. The keyword here is: parents.

Well I think this is due to a lot of things. Firstly, the effect hollywood and video games have on children these days. A lot of kids see things on tv (and not many realize) that it’s just for entertainment. I know many people who are obsessed with UFC and think that it’s cool to fight. None of them realize that these are professionals and actually fight as sport and not because they have hate or angst. You’ll notice 99% of the UFC fights end with smiles and the fighters respecting each other. However, kids sometimes don’t realize this or do but don’t take it into account. I also believe the fact that there is a lot of built up energy for kids these days that they’re not releasing. A lot of time playing video games, boasting to their friends, influences from elder brothers or fathers (yes some people may have fathers or brothers who promote this or partake in fighting be it verbal or physical aggression), influences from tv, influences from the internet, built up negative emotions from elsewhere, this “ana rayal” thing that was mentioned earlier. You can’t just put the reason for this on one thing. Sure there are things to do in Kuwait, but it’s not appealing to the kids. The issue about cops I cant comment on because I don’t see this stuff a lot to know if the cops are breaking up these fights or standing, but I’d like to believe that if a cop saw this they’d stop it straight away. I agree wasta and strong relations to get out of consequences lowers the reason of “why not” fight instead of “i might get in serious trouble if i fight”. Fights happen everywhere. Though fights in malls in my opinion is just awful and disrespectful to all of those around. The bystander effect takes place everywhere. So don’t blame the people who are “just watching”. It usually comes down to needing one person to take action and the rest jump in. If that one person doesn’t take affirmative action then chances are everyone will watch until someone does. I just hope we find a way to occupy the youth’s time and build on positives and not negatives such as fighting, substances, harassment and so on. It’s a sensitive topic and Kuwait is not the only place to have this. However, I think because the older generations are changing and realizing that this is very stupid, soon enough it will reduce. Think 5 years back, the amount of fights and so on were a lot more than they are today. The solution doesn’t remain with just one of us but all of society to help stop this kind of behavior, or at least reduce it as much as possible. I have faith in the future, but in order to do that we must have faith in ourselves and promote better behavior to our younger ones (be it family or friends). EnshAllah 5air. Some very interesting views on this post though, I must say.

+1 on the UFC. Check out the incredible fight at UFC 136 between Nam and Garcia. It was a 3 round non stop slug fest that ended with the both of them hugging and congratulating each other and wanting to do it again.

Definately! I actually have missed out on 136 – I saw the highlights for the edgar maynard fight though, haven’t seen that fight you’re talking about though. Will have to check it out. Most UFC fights are like that, they slug each other to a bloody pulp and then give each respect and congratulations on an awesome fight regardless of who wins.

Will do mate! Thanks for the heads up. The reason I didn’t watch it is cause I no longer subscribe to OSN. So I don’t get the channels 🙁

I’ll try and download it from a torrents site or something.

I don’t want to directly complain about OSN but I have had some troubles with them in the past which is why I didn’t renew my subscription. Everyone I talk to who has OSN says they never faced the same issue so maybe it was just my luck. Anyways I couldn’t justify renewing the subscription because I don’t watch tele that often and was having some issues. Instead of troubleshooting it I just decided not to renew my subscription. It’s sad though cause sometimes I wish I had it so I could use the record feature and have all the UFC fights on HD ready for my viewing pleasure whenever I want to. Maybe I’ll give them another shot in the near future.

I used to have big issues with Showtime back in the day and had a really hard time canceling my subscription. But I got a new subscription recently and haven’t had any issues at all.

There has been a lot of input in this post, & i agree about promoting values at home & recreational activities along with the very basic information; the purpose of life. Regardless of religious preferences, in general the purpose of life is to live in a dignifiying manner, and I am talking about the true dignity, no the “ana rayal, ana fulan bin fulan, i work here or i studied there”, as I was saying were I come from there is a lot of awareness of social problem and organizations offering help to eradicate them but is useless if individual dont go a step beyond a see tge larger picture of the purpose of life and to find a gratification of it, & I go back to the same thing all religions believe that if you do good in this life you will have a reward after death, and without going into details about that but the main religions of the world are have this principle; be good have your reward, be bad have your punishment, summirazing my opinion is that we need religious commitment that will help acquiring values and morals and to pratice recreational activities, this is done as individual (because a individual regardless of his upbringing should relize his shortcomings and reform himself at any stage of his life), then individuals should make an impact on the people around them specially if these people are young and depend directly from him (i.e. His children) and all together make and impact on the society… For a better world, ya Rabb assits us.

P.S. I also think that there are subliminal msgs found inthe media are contributing to problems that were are facing today, in the west were you see more “open mindness” are tasting the results of this are is common now to see book with titles like “too sexy, too young” and proposal for legislating bullying, we have to adopt the thinking that reaching excellence in certain aspect or in all aspects of our lives doesnt have to be along with adopting an attitud of supremacism.

it;s not yet a fight for me..those kids maybe provoked or has some misunderstanding b/w each other that leads them to hurt each other, but i don,t think it,s a serious fight b/w them..unlike if you’l be in other countries that has some weapons carried whether it.s knife or gun that lead to serious injuries or death ..kuwait is still safe to be.!

Yeah it’s not much of a fight I guess but still, kids that young shouldn’t be doing this and especially not out in shopping malls. It doesn’t have to be a fight to be negative, it’s a form of aggression and trying to be dominant. Sad to say, but I’ll use dogs as an analogy. Dogs will become progressively worse in their behavior if they grow up with such aggressive surroundings. The same applies here. It doesn’t need to be a proper brawl or include weapons for it to be a cause for concern. If these kids continue down this path with such aggressive behavior, I fear for their future as God knows what they may go into.

So now that we’ve seen some really incisive root cause analysis of the fight clubs in the Avenues, we need to consider the corrective and preventive actions.
Corrective actions: None.
What has happened cannot be undone.

Preventive actions:
1) Serious shoppers should avoid going to the Avenues over the weekends and public holidays.
2) Increased presence of law enforcement officers on Segways throughout the mall and mounted on horseback in the parking lot.
3) Videowalls in the courtyard areas with live streaming videos from different fashion houses from Milan, Paris, London, New York and Tokyo plus exhaustive coverage of all the fashion weeks would be a useful distraction to keep the Jahra and/or Saudi set yobs engaged.
4)Rope in LoYAC to arrange activites that excite youth such as, kite flying, skateboarding and karting outside the mall.
5)Organize frequent blood donation drives and free health checks: mobile health camps to make possible blood draws for screening of thalassemia, blood glucose etc, all of which serve as small but rather useful diversions for channeling of youthful energies and making the national sport of weekend birdwatching seem less macabre and more civil.
6)Holding of spelling bees at That-el-salasil.
7)Naming and shaming policy can be a rather useful deterrant. Mugshots and names of the yobs involved in a fight should be displayed on a special bulletein board – the Avenues Fight Barometer for all and sundry to see.

Wee3 shno Hal hlaga .. 3gd .. 5ayseen .. Walla el Marooth 2ay wa7d yethawash .. Mayda5loona el mall!!! Leel2bd .. Hal ashkal mo kafo walashay ..

Pretty constructive comments up there!!! 😉

You know what I think?
I think these kids are re-enacting (word?) the first Avenues hosha, the video of which was VIRAL.

Ditto.

I think it’s got to do with education and parents not being there to teach kids morals.

It’s not about not having anything to do; yes we’re not in the best place for “happenings and events” and such, but honestly if I’m bored I don’t go around punching people in the face.

I’ve been brought up in Kuwait and it was much worse back then (remember the gangsters paradise in front of Fudruckers Salmiya? now that was hardcore stuff). People have become more aware and try to respect themselves, but you have a group of individuals who are stuck in that old mentality. Not to mention most of the people who cause trouble are most probably uneducated (due to unwillingness to learn) and having no ambitions in life.

I don’t go to Avenues or any mall during weekends, not only for crap like this but the traffic is just nuts.

I just laughed the whole time when I saw this video, part because it’s nothing surprising to me after living here for 5 years, and the other because I think it was a staged “meet me at the avenues if you want to fight” sort of thing. If I had been walking through that area with my wife and this happened after just kicking them all one good time to get them out of the way I would grab the closest one, slap him upside the head a couple of times, then grab him by the shirt collar and take him outside the mall, or maybe just bend him over my knee and spank him like a child to embarrass him in front of all his friends.

For the people who take the token it’s violence in television and video games stance, that’s just ridiculous. There are stupid kids and stupid parents that produce the acts of stupidity. If you couple both those things with the “who you know equates to what you get away with” mentality it’s a playground for idiots.

Before people read into it to much, I am not slamming Arabic people,Kuwait or the Muslim culture, I am slamming the elitist stance people take and the disrespect for others and disregard for authority, seen in the way people drive or even walking in the malls, and being in public places here in Kuwait. It seems like the easiest answer is making excuses for why people behave that way.

The UFC comment was true about it being a sport in that people test their skills then shake hands after it’s over, but most of those guys like to fight, and fought in the streets before they fought in WEC, Strike Force, or the UFC. Once pro they aren’t as likely to get caught fighting because they don’t want to risk their careers, funny how that fear of consequence thing works.

In my opinion kids and even adults here that do this stupid stuff never get their ass beat enough or never have to face consequences so they go about doing whatever they feel like. For the majority of people working here they aren’t going to fight back because they know that their luck the person they have an altercation with will be connected somehow to someone with “wasta” and they will be forced to leave the country or face a lot of legal problems, so again it’s the perfect opportunity for local kids like in the video to take advantage of. But again, those kids don’t represent all of Kuwait’s youth, so there is still hope.
