Awtar shutdown

Awtar at Marina Mall got shot down by the ministry of trade and commerce which is I guess not a big deal with all the recent places that were shutdown at the free trade zone.

But one thing did grab my attention and that is the fact the closure sign says they were shut down due to cheating (if I translated it right). I wonder what they were caught doing…

Thanks Alain

Update: I got an email from the owners of Awtar explaining the reason behind the closure, turns out it’s just a technicality, here is what they had to say:

Hi mark,
Regarding your Awtar post i would like to clear it out if possible. since we as part owners were extremely surprised by the closing down of the restaurant (it will open up again any day now as soon as the paper work is done).

Turns out back in November the purchasing manager decided to purchase Sadia chicken (not kuwaiti) instead of the Kuwaiti chicken which was declared on the certificate for the ministry. A representative showed up and gave the restaurant a warning regarding this matter. Awtar took care of the issue and informed the purchaser to stick to the Kuwaiti brand of chicken as declared in the certificate. Management thought the issue was over. The right thing to do (we had to learn the hard way) was to not only switch back to the declared chicken but also go back and follow up with the ministry and get a representative to inspect this change again and clear the restaurant from any penalties. Because we didn’t do that the ministry acts only on paper work and based on their paper work Awtar didnt switch back (which is our fault we should have followed up with them) and in that case they had to shut down the store for cheating in the kind of chicken we use.
The lawyers are sorting it out i hope this was helpful

Thanks

🙁 I love this restaurant, last time my husband and I went at like 4pm, it was so empty, it was really nice, just the two of us, wonder what they were doing?
Getting cheap meat? Prices too high?
‘cheating’ – hmmm…

I’d love to know the reason specifically. I hope they were not serving expired food or dog meat, since I ate there a lot.

relax, it cant be expired meat. The officials have destroyed last year 2700 tons expired food per day (even on holidays), as per a newspaper report 😉 there is no capacity to import more….
Arab Times 10.01.11 ..

I love that restaurant. That sucks.

I know of a lot more companies that have cheated. I hope they get the same.

Looks like I am the only one who has eaten there which means I should pass by once they open up. Anyone tried their tabbouleh by any chance?

NOT EATEN !? You Mean?

I was disturbed when my wife sent me a pic of the closure sign…its one of the best rest. here in kuwait , the staff are friendly, the food is good, and the atmosphere is calm and relaxing..we go there at least 3 times a week….dang that sucks but would really love to know what they mean by Gosh tejari..!!

not sure if Mark was being sarcastic ‘looks like im the only one that has eaten there’ – lol.. have you or haven’t you?
Honestly, I loved it. Really sad that they have shut down, what gets to me is, so many ‘nice’ places get closed down but yet places like the fatayer place in Salwa are allowed to remain open – has anyone seen the dirt on the floors in those places?? Surely healthy and safety (hygiene) comes before ‘cheating’? LOL

The sticker says:”Closed by the Ministry of Commerce due to the violation of Article 62 of the Anti Commercial Cheating Law of 2007”. I take “cheating” here to mean “price gouging.”

You notice the law is fairly recent, so apparently many establishments were getting away with it prior to 2007 because it wasn’t illegal to cheat!

There is a sustained campaign to watch prices by the government that started after the announcement of the KD 1000 gift to every citizen. I guess this is one of its fruits.

I think this is a case of someone at the “Ministries” going overboard..I believe this place has the best tasting Lebanese in Kuwait and it appears that they were trying to improve the quality of the chicken by changing supplier and forgot to send in the paperwork….I think there are more important things that could be inspected by the “ministries” elsewhere in Kuwait!!
