New Caprice

My contact at Alghanim Automotive sent me the following email to publish on the blog:

Hey, some news for you and your audience. The new Lumina’s and all new Caprice’s are in Kuwait!! You know how popular with Kuwaitis these cars are. They will be launched in the next couple of weeks all over Kuwait. Not only that, there is a new Epica and the new SUV that just came out, the Captiva. The Captiva will arrive end of December and is a very sexy SUV. I tried the new Lumina and OMG… it’s a freakin’ monster under the hood. The buttons, dials, and inside trim quality is so far above what you’re used. Honestly, it’s German level stuff (and im not talking VW) inside and outside. The time of big, ugly, floaty, gas guzzling American cars is way over. We’re planning to take on Audi A6 with the Caprice.

Here are pictures he attached to the email.

I tried the previous caprice it wasnt too bad, it just felt a bit too plastiky.. I have to say that I really do like the caddys..

And I think the SS models are pretty good, but the problem is the crowd of people that use em are usually crap.. and if you buy it people think you are part of that crap!

The captiva looks like the volvo to me.. and suprisingly its manual!

Ive tried it…trust me….they have come a long way. They finally woke up after they were losing the car market to Germany and Japan (and Korea to an extent). This lumina is like none other. A lot better than their Ford Fusion 2007(which is pretty good too)

the Captiva exterior looks like the new audi q7 and the interior looks like the 2001 to 2006 pajero, and why they used the australian holden sign? are they getting rid of the American chevy?

Holden Cars reach the Middle East under the Chevrolet Badge. The Monaro is the Lumina Coupe, The Holden Commodore is the normal Lumina, etc, etc

These pictures (except for the one with the Chev badge) are the official pictures of the cars which are still dressed in Holden clothing 🙂

Only in Arab lands are these cars doing well. We’re always 50 years behind the rest of the world.

Other than the horrible styling GM make shit quality cars, and you only have to look at North American sales to figure that out..

the lumina SS has always been a great preforming car and now it looks really good too. but yeah marzouq you are right about the type of ppl that buy these cars which is a real shame.

hmmm , i like the Caprice . But the SS feels like a kuwaitie From Khaitan with bumper sticker ” if u chalange me, u lost ” lol

Omar I think you are mistaken about the quality of cars.. its not that which is affecting them so much..

its basically you can get more car for your money when buying japanese.. but in kuwait… some people just dont care! So thats the case..

Look at the trucks.. chevy trucks are extremely reliable.. We have been using one for 15 years non-stop with only small problems nothing really major, and we arent the only ones in this type of case..

but you cant even question japanese quality period..

im amazed how a car agent representing alghanim is talking is posting in a popular blog with these words .. ” sexy ” and ” freakin ” … man .. Be Professional ! … we are not kids so that you think u can advetise on us with these words trying to act cool and friendly .

and about the 2006 caprice .. we have one .. first months it was Nice and SOLID interior .. after few months .. it starts to make sounds in the interior .. expanding from heat and all .. and feeling more plasticy .. and the speakers make weird sound .. the quality is shit .. i haaate the interior .. even the technology .. NO CHANGES at all .. just basic mechanics from the 90s … look at the new Yukon .. only a new shape .. same old shitty plasticy interior .. nothing new technologicly .. Plus .. they still dont give u Xenon Lights or even Lenses on the head light .

i swear .. there is a mitsubishi mini bus which is like 2004 model .. that has Lenses in its head lights .

German cars RULES ! and japanese are kicking american cars ass in quality also and durability

Everyone can agree that American Cars are NOT built as superb as one might expect. They also get really lousy HP from a huge engine. They are NOT good cars but they are really fantastic. I have been in several Luminas and they are amazing! American cars always have and might forever have cheap plastic interiors but still their cars are good. In my opinion. German, then Japanese, then American… but you cannot say the Lumina is a bad car, or that its weak or that its ugly. Simple 🙂

Fiancy, i think the second paragraph is Mark’s own comment not the Email he recieved. I dont think an official email would contain that! and one more thing, Buying an American Car is like buying cigarettes, you know its bad, but you still buy it. Thats what I think…

” it’s German level stuff (and im not talking VW)”
German level ?? is that a joke or something? and what’s with the ” i’m not talking VW ” ??? i have a VW since 2002 and it’s working just fine, the material used in “German VW’s” is way much better than any shitty American car.
German Level ?? take a Caprice out in the rain, drive it like 40 km/h and turn the steering wheel quickly and see what happens, you’ll end up swirling around, take any “German VW”, on the other hand, and drive it like a maniac in the rain (which i always do !!) and see the German Safety for yourself !!
German Level my ass!!
i went through a curve once in a 2005 Lumina LS doing 80 and the car drifted and i hit the pavement, while in a 2002 Audi A4 i went through the same curve doing 140 , now that’s “German Level” !!!
even the engines, a German V8 4.0 or 4.4 L engine will produce up to 420HP in a normal sedan, not a sport car, while american V8 5.7L engines produce 300HP in the caprice and up to 325HP in the SS, that’s not technology, that’s just lame!!

I didn’t take the VW comment as a slur against VW quality. More like an (OVERSTATED) suggestion that an American can can match the quality of the “premium” German cars (Mercs, Porsches, etc.)

Bottom line – standard level German cars don’t have as many buttons/gadgets to press as the standard level Jap cars, and I need something to keep me occupied while driving.

American cars have come a long way. You’ll notice the focus on reduction of size and improvement in the interior in a lot of their models. I’m sure you’ve seen the interior of the Chrysler 300C and its not all that bad.

At the end of the day, you also have to look at what you’re paying. Yes the engines are huge yet don’t give comparative output to German models but the prices are also much lower. These cars are a very good alternative for people who can’t afford the German stuff but are still conscious of performance and looks to some extent.

Well that’s interesting on so many levels, I mean did the guy actually tell you “Hey, paste this on your site.”?

I mean especially when he went “The Captiva will arrive end of December and is a very sexy SUV. I tried the new Lumina and OMG… it’s a freakin’ monster under the hood.” Really Mr. Chevrolet Marketing? Really?

Sabah makes a great point. We all know German will still be a reference for most of us for years to come, but comparatively, the new generation of GM cars are a bold new change. GM has started getting its act together and their stock price already started increasing.

I owned German (VW), Japanese (Honda), and Italian (Alfa Romeo) before. German cars are notorious for performance and engineering, Japanese for build quality, and Italian for beauty and design. New GM cars, while still having big engines, have been packing more power (new SS 360bhp!!), better control, better interiors, and much more attractive design than before. I’m never going for Jap. until they start giving importance to design, their cars look like copies of each other and their interiors suck royally.

Anyway, all we are doing is talk. Im sure Mark (and everyone else) will get a chance to test drive them pretty soon at the dealer, and then each of us will be able to get their own opinion whether these new cars kick ass or not.

The Captiva looks like a Kia Sportage on steroids and the Epica looks like something the Ninja Turtles would drive. Yuck! Talk about pointless front end treatment.

As for the Caprice, I am willing to admit that it looks half decent, though for some odd reason, I can’t get over the fact that it looks like the bastard child of a Scoobie and an Audi, or even a Vauxhall Omega (especially in profile view – the chiselled back end and the curving roofline). Take another look and it’s an Accord.

In a nutshell and imho, American cars don’t look good because they lack class.

American cars are good bc they offer the best bang for your buck in terms of engine power and they are constantly improving.

to match the HP of say the lumina SS, you would need a higher end german car like the M3 which is also almost double the price with 60HP less. you get an overall better car in the M3 but not everybody can afford an M3 however the SS is very affordable by almost anybody

also while big and inefficent compared to more refined german motors, american engines usually have a higher displacement that give them that lovely low-end torque.

I will keep my sarcastic comments about anyone thinking they can “sell/market” cars this way to myself (for now), but I can’t stop myself from agreeing with the fact that it is not at all professional to use such words; I doubt that you really represent the business, I thought alghanim are better than that, having someone like you with such immature experience in the market and the people. And I wonder if you are that desperate to keep the job that obviously too big for you to handle. Go find yourself a place where you can learn how and what to say, and please next time don’t try to outsmart anybody here, we are not kids to fall for the cool impressions you are trying to use.

About the language – if if you liked it or not that guy got you talking about it…

About the cars – American car companies are definetly getting their act back together. LOL Despite our support for them we bought a Jap this year!

HMM I’m still wondering why they haven’t launched the Equinox SUV here
