I just read on Zawya that the parliament might soon scrap the coeducation ban. That would mean both genders will continue to attend school and university together but I am also guessing this means the walls that currently divide the guys and girls in some university classes will also be removed. This is one proposal I’m hoping will get passed. [Link]

Well hopefully it will Chess, but I think that schools should be able to choose whether they want to maintain the segregation policy or not. Let the students choose which type of school they want to attend.

Girls don’t get troubled by boys at school in just about everywhere else in the world.
It has nothing to do with co-ed v single-sex.
It has everything to do with the culture of the society they are living in.

A valuabe point is that when these students enter the workforce, the workforce will be co-ed and they (women) will compete for positions with other men. The outside world is not co-ed, so they should not be or should be able to be given a choice in colleges to choose whether they want to be in a co-ed environment which will prepare them more for a co-ed work environment or choose to be segregated and not prepared for a co-ed work environment.

At GUST there are plans for “some” higher level courses to be coed this fall and the university will provide portable clear dividers for separation. This is progress. The result should be positive socially, educationally and economically in many ways — better use of faculty, classrooms, etc. Happy to see this advancement. We have some outstanding male and female students who can learn from each other. … When the student is ready the teacher appears!
Kuwait University are not segregating females from males. Only high density classes (200 – 400+)have sections for females and sections for males. Higher level classes are not segregated. Students share the same classroom but girls set on one side and guys sit on the other side (but this was happening naturally before the coeducation ban rule by the Islamist parliament).
Also i thought that private schools (like Bayan, ASK,…) are coeducation.
I remember in school this was like a default “trend”. Half and Half like exactly split in the center lol
Funny thing is, the teachers wouldn’t even say a word, its just like fixed into your head somehow..
They were trying to pass laws to get private schools to segregate, some of them already have.

At AUK only 100 level classes are segregated, and will no longer be starting this fall semester. Personally I find it much better with girls in the class. I graduated from a private mixed school and the concept of segregation was very weird to be honest. I am happy to see that the government is finally taking a step forward, hopefully a law will pass to stop censorship too!
It is very good in terms of some male unable to continue studying have to delay their own course plans because a subject is available only for female section, same goes opposite, this might help alot in term of getting in courses.
on the other hand, if classes has females on side and males on other side would be perfect, as well as nowadays females and males are actually more closer to social network, so the idea to separate them kinda fails when there are more than one way to talk to each other.

I mean, how about giving people the choice? If you dont wanna hang out with guys, fair enough, go hang out with your girlfriends elsewhere, but forcing a silly wall and making people feel like total weirdos is just pathetic.
With regards to boys chasing girls, well thats basically down to culture and how they were raised. Co-ed education might at least get people to chill out a little bit more.

for those scientific reasons you asked for, girls effect the average of the class which means cancelation of curves because simply the average is “high”, and for your knowledge, girls work against each other’s, boy’s work with each other, like what happened when I want to pick up the solution of a homework from the copy center, couldn’t find it that day and why? some girls want to the semester guide and asked him to remove it, I didn’t do my homework that day.

In January 2012, a study of the University of Pennsylvania was published, involving a randomized experiment, considered the experiment with the highest level of scientific evidence. The data comes from schools in Korea, where a law was passed randomly assigning students to schools in their district. The study by Park, Berhman and Choi titled Causal Effects of Single-Sex Schools on College Entrance Exams and College Attendance: Random Assignment in Seoul High Schools concluded that ““Attending all-boys schools or all-girls schools rather than attending coeducational schools is significantly associated with higher average scores.”

@Klay – I went to an all-girls high school in the US and this study is true, however, we are discussing college level here. Colleges prepare you for the workforce by giving you the foundational skills to enter the workforce where men and women work together. High schools prepare students for college, not the workforce, so this initiative does not affect co-education in private schools. Building walls between genders at the university levels hinders the students productivity level, but bottom-line is that ‘governments’ should not be implementing these laws, it should be up to the colleges to incorporate this policy due to the cultural aspects of this society and students should be able to choose which college to attend. Kuwait has FAR more pressing issues that Parliament should be discussing, like a new airport and metro, not segregation in schools, that once again, hinders future generations. Are the youth of this nation ignored in government policy in general, maybe the youth should discuss their future in Kuwait and the society that they will now inherit.

I feel schools have more to do with just academics and higher grades. They basically prepare students to face the real world. It will be pointless if you churn out a bunch of nerds who are not able to interact normally with the people around them, for example the character of Raj Koothrappali from the Big Bang Theory.
Whatever the studies say… single sex or segregated schools and universities should be a CHOICE, and not ENFORCED ON THE ENTIRE POPULATION!!!

The problem, Klay, is that gender segregation does absolutely nothing to fix the underlying issues here. We know that boys don’t do as well in English classes if there are more girls in the class, but it’s not simply because girls exist (I know the studies offer explanations, but the way these articles are written tend to simplify things). For example, the decrease in sexual harassment? All that says to me is that there is a sexual harassment problem in general. Taking away the primary targets of harassment does nothing to change the fact that some people are harassers who will just do it off school grounds. The proper way to decrease sexual harassment is to teach people about respect, what constitutes harassment, etc. and to take proper action when there is an issue instead of sweeping it aside. That would result in a REAL decrease in sexual harassment, rather than a displacement. The studies as to why girls perform better in all-girls’ schools cite sexism as the issue. What are we really solving by separating girls and boys this way? It won’t improve sexist attitudes. They will still encounter them outside of school, whether in the workplace or in social settings.
That said, we haven’t seen any of these studies in full so we don’t have that much to go on. Does the systematic review you mentioned take into consideration the quality of the studies here? It’s probably not all that skewed (if at all) with such a large amount, but that’s not a guarantee. Terms like “improvement”and “decrease” here are vague. Improved/decreased by how much? Significant or insignificant?
This will only work if they start the process with the new generation. Kids that started kindergarten this year are the ones who should move into coed schools. If they suddenly lift the ban all hell will break loose and it wont fly.
Most ridiculous law I’ve ever heard of- outside of the public school system there’s been co-education at private school KG- Yr 12 for years….
I’m glad I got out of the system before things take a turn for the worse. Now I’ll just sit back and watch what little value our education system has get thrown out the window.

Progress is bad now?
The whole point is that segregated education should always be a CHOICE for the parents/students. I will not like my future child to develop and be educated in a segregated school, possibly with segregated teachers as well.
The point of education is to allow a child to know how to function in real life; and what’s segregation teaching our society? (which is already a bit distant to start with).
Besides that, the most important aspect of co-education is that genders WILL LEARN to respect each other’s boundaries.
Some might argue that segregation is what Islam calls for. When in fact nothing about Islam is segregated, and it does not call for segregation to be enforced (by people). The Islamist N.A. we had for a while used Islam as a means of gaining popularity and votes. For a point of time, recently, if someone mentions Islam, everyone nods in silence. People seem to forget that Kuwait is a country of Laws and a constitution, where Islam is only considered the national religion and is considered a “source” for making laws.
