Portraits with my new 85mm

I picked up a second hand Nikon 85mm F1.8D AF prime lens from World Photo last night for KD35. It’s a very cheap price for one considering a new one costs over KD150. The reason its so cheap is because neither the autofocus or the electronics work so I have to manually set everything which isn’t too bad. On my way to work I tried the lens out on some workers near the office and you can check the pictures out below. Will try to get some better ones tomorrow.

nice pics! 🙂 to me i choose setting the focus manually better than the outo.
i would like to drop few comments about ur pics composition (hope it won’t bother u)

1st one: very intresting colors & texures (his clothes) created a nice look and is eye catching element.

2nd: the man is almost in the center and there is nothing interesting about him. i’d rather take a detailed pic of his hand holding the tool and reveal the contrast between wood and heavy fabric glove and show abit of the background rather than capturing the whole thing .

3rd: the cropped head is a annoying also the white handle which is out of focus, though the man’s posture is interesting also the gestures in the photo is the best of all three.

i get it when u snap the shot u don’t get to figure it out till u see the image and analyze it, this is what i think u may not agree w/me 🙂
thank u for giving us ur time downloading ur pics and showing them to us

thanks for the feedback. I usually don’t do portraits because I am too shy to ask people for their photographers but I’m going to try and do more and hopefully get more comfortable spending time composting a shot with a stranger.

I had focus issues because I was focusing with my eye and most of my shots came out of focus. I had forgotten about the little green LED that lights up when you’re manually focusing to tell you if the subject is in focus or not. Next batch should be better.

“some workers”

they have names. Did you even bother to ask? they are people, too. Not there for your photographic amusement and to work.

iza: I don’t need to know their names to take their pictures and “some workers” isn’t an offensive term either. I was very polite and asked them if they minded I take their pictures and they didn’t have a problem.

Wow good pics mark, when i saw the pics i had 2 things in mind :

1- “some workers” are models 🙂
2- this an ad for Nikon cameras

needs moar bokeh! im loving the sharp subjects and out of focus background..i think my favorite lenses are the fixed zoom lenses, i seem to use them and favor them more than my zoom lens

mark, if you still own any old film slrs try using the lenses they came with on your digital slr but you might need to get an adaptor for it first..works really well, i’ve tried it with my canon! used some old lenses (maybe from 70s/80s..?) on it with some pretty results

The advantage of Nikon is all my old lenses work without needing an adapter 🙂 I have my 50mm 1.2f lens from the late 70s which works great still.

i was referring to older lenses made in russia and japan like jupiter, m42, yashica, kiev and fitting them onto your digital nikon

but yeah that’s a sweet lens, i love 50mm lenses.. bonus points for the 1.2! mine is a 1.4..need to get myself a wide angle

Mark

Appreciate your positive comment on toasta feedback though you are a Professional photographer.

Good job.

Does anyone know if World Photo sell any decent Canon lenses? Sorry, but can’t use Nikon after years of Canon – it’s just too much change!

Very nice! It didn’t appear that you used a second owned lens. Thanks for sharing your new found World Photo shop. A must visit to save more KD’s. 😉

Mark ! i know those guys .. one of them SCREAMED at me once when i was about to step on the curbstone by mistake :p you should see what they do with the newspapers when it’s too sunny outside :p
