The Art of Buying Meat

I mentioned the other day that Geo my dog will be on a raw meat diet. This means I have to buy him fresh meat every other day and luckily there are 3 butchers near my apartment. The problem I figured I would face buying 1KG of the same meat every other day is the curiosity of the butcher. If I start passing by the butcher every other day, over time I will become a good customer and I am sure he will also want to start a conversation with me and maybe even ask me what I am doing with the meat. I don’t want to tell him the meat is for my dog because I don’t want him to give me the crappiest meat he has. I want the best for Geo and thats why the butcher must never find out the meat will be going to my dog. So I had to create a story in case he does ask me what I will be doing with the meat and its a good thing I did because yesterday he asked.

Around 4 days ago I past by one of the butchers which was recommended to me. It was my first time visiting a butcher but I had spoken to my mum earlier and she told me what to tell him. So I go in and I tell the butcher and I need 1KG of cow meat. I want sirloin, without fat and diced up and split into two packages each containing half a kilo. Five minutes later I walked out with the meat, it cost me KD2.

Yesterday I was planning on going to another butcher so that I could spread out my meat purchases so that I don’t arouse suspicion but my mum recommended I stick to the same butcher all the time that way I can get the best meat. I guess it works like sushi places, the more you visit the better the quality of fish you get. So I went back to the guy and I repeated the same thing I told him last time, except this time he started asking me questions. He was like you want it steak? I was like I want the same thing you gave me last time. He is like but you want it steak? I was like umm, you know chopped up into pieces.. like 2 days ago. He was like what will you use it for? I told him I just started a low carb diet and I am grilling the meat. He was like in that case take the fillet, its a lot better. I was like how much does a kilo cost? He was like KD2.5. I was like no its ok, just give me what I took last time, I don’t want to spend this much money for dinner. He was like listen I will give it to you for KD2, and I am telling you once you have this meat you can’t go back to the other one, you will love it. So he gave me the meat and it looked really good, so red and soft and no fat at all. I paid him KD2 and left.

Geo is really getting the star treatment from Nat. yesterday for breakfast he had 2 boiled eggs and 3 brown toast. For lunch he had chicken with basmati rice and for dinner he had leftovers from lunch followed by honey on toast. Now if she will only start cooking food for me!

Update: I just realized something, the older Geo gets the more food he will eat. What am I gonna tell the butcher when suddenly I am buying 5KG of meat every other day?

Update 2: Fuck I just realized, 5KG of meat every other day means I will be spending KD150 on raw meat a month. Fuck! I miscalulated. Its KD150 if I am feeding him 3 times a day but once he becomes an adult its only once a day meaning KD50 a month which is pretty decent.

i dont know. our old dog was a lot smaller and we used to feed him regular dog food. this is the first large dog i own and the first time i am trying the raw meat diet :S

Buy a freezer, if you don’t have one already and then buy the meat in bulk, say once a month. You’ll get a better price. My parents used to live in one of the remotest parts of Africa, and this is what they did. They had BIG strong healthy dogs!

if he ask you more questions just replay with
” oh the wife told me to get it like yesterday
and you don’t want to anger the wife hahahaha ”

close more topics , replacing wife with family also work

OK this is gonna sound really bad but…Your DOG is eating better than like 80% of the world’s population…That’s kinda sad. I mean, I love animals and I’m all for pampering them, but this is a weeeee bit much, no?

My dear friends, I would like to suggest buying fresh beef meat from the Souk (I forget the name). It’s the one in City, in the old market: Fisher bldg. / near the Old Ladies Area. There’s a Mosque just near it. Beef meat cost KD1.5/KG

Another suggestion, you get brazilian frozen beef meat (like 5kgs-6kgs a pack) at the cost of KD0.9/kg in Shuwaikh. Near the Vegetable market. I get that kind for my family. It’s cheap & really taste nice as Roast / sometime steak! :))

chicken is cheapest and you should alternate, my dog seems to love those chicken wings from nayef, boiling them takes 20 minutes and they last for the week. the pack is for 600 fils and contains 12 to 15 wings.

baaa! we are never cheaper than cows! lamb costs more!

as a puppy he needs raw meat for developmental reasons. it is safe to switch to canned/dry dogfood when an adult. If you tend to discriminate on the quality of dogfood you want feed to Geo, you can always get organic canned dogfood, assuming you can find it in this country.

If you ever decide to get frozen beef, i suggest buying the australian frozen beef/lamb brands. Cheaper than the local, non-frozen variety.

goodluck.

… and when feeding your dog chicken wings (or any other part), always remove the bones! Dogs are more at risk of choking on a chicken bone due to its smaller size and because its weaker than cow bones, may also splinter in the dog’s mouth.

Cow bones are best for strengthening dog’s teeth.

goodluck.

What you are doing is wrong.Buy a good dry food a give him only one time per week fresh meet. If you like we can talk about. I use to have dogs since i’m 3 years old in germany…

Jens

also, you don’t need to remove the bones from chicken. They are soft and the dog like it. Only the bones from ducks and similar are dangerous. At the international hospital they have now Eucanuba, a good dog food.

Jens what I am doing is not wrong at all. I am giving my dog the healthiest food I can give him. If you want do a bit of research online and read the Salon.com article on the raw food diet and you will see why feeding raw meet has so many advantages.

Hi Mark, you can get easy 3 books with 3 different suggestions for dog food. Ok it is maybe not wrong but not neccesary. Dry food is good for cleaning the teeth (tooth). But it’s your dog is was only a suggestion because I have now my 4. dog and nobody is a better teacher than the live 🙂

Jens

By the way, your website is really good and I enjoy to read it, also the old one with the pics every day…I was a litle unhappy to see a pic from inside my company but I hope it will not happen again 😉

Most breeders here in Germany use High Quality dry food for raising their dogs too. Feeding Toast and eggs sounds really weird to me, but I am no expert on that.
But hey, its your dog 😉
