The Avenues Phase III

I just found an article with pictures of The Avenues Phase III and it looks completely different from Phase I and Phase II… and in a good way. The picture above is one of the shots and the caption talks about how it was designed to look like an outdoor space while the picture below is supposed to be a section that’s modeled on a traditional Kuwaiti souk and would contain an exhibit for the rich cultural heritage of Kuwait. Check out the article for more details and pictures. [Link]

I think this is brilliant, we need more outdoor spaces like this where people can walk, go to a cafe and generally not feel they are in a mall. The Jumeirah souk-like area also looks good and could be a great place for traditional or Arabian goods.

This is why the Avenues is still Kuwait’s #1 mall.

Finally a mall (or at least a part of it) that has a spatial relationship with the outdoor space. I really wish they would have shop fronts on the other side rather than parking lot entrances. Can’t wait.

I WISH it turns out like the old souq layout! it would be like souk mubarkiya meets madinat jumeriah!!! I so wish! 🙂

The open area looks great but I don’t think the old look area will work. Going from modern shops, cafes, restaurants etc. to a blast from the past? They should start a new project(s) with just these kind of nostalgic experiences occupying the entire space. Better alone than mixed in. That’s just my person opinion anyway 🙂

Wow, I like it, it’s covered, so you won’t get really effected by the heat in the summer while enjoying the sun. Looks very similar to the Khabary Al Fahaheel project which is on hold.

The picture can really get you tempted when you in a wheelchair :p

The whole thing is scheduled to open sometime in 2012. Because, you know, Kuwait clearly needs more malls and retail space.

I read about this a while back and the only thing that really kills me about it is a part of phase three designed as an outdoorsy, Bohemian-themed space with trendy, youth-oriented shops called the SoKu. SoKu. South of Kuwait. Like SoHo in New York.

God, the name is agonizing. Dare I say [un]original? Ugh.

Great work, cant wait for the opening. !!!

Anyone knows how could we rent a space there ?? The website and the phone numbers of the Avenues mall is not helpful, since we all know its all reserved for certain people !!!

I know that. But if you read the article Mark linked above, it says that the SoKu was inspired from New York’s SoHo, not London’s. I only mentioned New York because of its relevance to the matter.

Either way, SoHo has the same name in both cities and actually sounds decent [with the rhyme and all]. SoKu, on the other hand… Yeah, no. Looks like a misspelling of the word ‘souk.’ Visually and phonetically displeasing.

looks nice….however am sure alshya’s will spoil the experience by putting 10 starbucks and 50 mediocre restaurants of his company………. not paying full rent of course….

I love how we’re expected to park our cars underground and observe the souk with the ‘old Kuwait’ feel. Quite contradictory.

I do however, agree with everyone here that we need some open, urban spaces in Kuwait, and I mean all over Kuwait, not just inside malls.

@ Alex

Actually, the traditional souk of the Avenues is a copy cat of Al-Mubarakiya Souk in Kuwait and not Souk Waqif in Qatar.

Cheers!

the first one is a total marina rip off
the second one looks even worst than mubrakia souk if that’s possible

joe: wrong. Mabani Company owns the mall and Alshaya` who bought his shares in it in a very shady transaction, owns 60% of it. so there are the other 40% owners whom are getting ripped basically since Alshaya`s shops dont pay market price rents.

additionally, the land is leased from the government at dirt cheap prices (not Al Mabani’s fault, but still questionable transaction nevertheless)

Get your facts right before you speak ..joe
