Thousands of stations in your car

Now that I finally have an iPhone with a 3G connection I can finally do what a lot of other people are doing and that is listen to satellite radio and other international stations in the car. All you need is a 3G capable iPhone, an iPhone radio app and a way of connecting the iPhone to the car stereo.

My setup is an iPhone 3GS with the WunderRadio app and an Alpine iDA-X001 head unit with which my iPhone connects to using the dock connector. If you aren’t as lucky you could use an FM Transmitter or RCA inputs. With WunderRadio you can connect to XM and SIRIUS stations in addition to thousands of other stations from around the world. For example I can listen to Lebanese radio stations like Radio one or Mix FM if I want to. Its not perfect since sometimes the connection disrupts for a few seconds every now and then but thats mostly only with the XM and SIRIUS stations, haven’t had trouble with the rest.

Yeah its subscription based, you need to subscribe to XM or SIRIUS but if you don’t want to you don’t have to since there are over a thousand free stations.

I bought 2010 Toyota Tundra fully loaded for a friend in Kuwait last month. It had a USB port to connect your iPhone or iPod (total control using your car stereo and it charges as well) and you can stream music and calls using Bluetooth. I tried it before I shipped the truck to him and it was awesome. My next car MUST have USB and Bluetooth streaming πŸ™‚

can i listen to q8is stations like marina fm ? cause im studying abroad ..

if i get a conformation for this .. i will spend a hell of money this month .. i dont have anything from those .. no iphone 3G no alpine unit and no software ..

good stuff mark,
got a question though, i have the 3GS with 3G option enabled, yet what i’m seeing all the time is the letter “E” right next to the operator’s name. one i’ve seen a circle instead of the E, so i assumed that’s the 3G workin. enlighten me if im mistaken. thanks mark πŸ™‚

hello πŸ™‚

this is really great!! ive been looking for smth similar to this! but im wondering if there a device that just has the radio option. i mean, i dont want a whole iPhone… i just want a radio that i can use & has the ability to let browse non-local stations… any ideas?

I have been using WunderRadio on my old HTC Tytn-II for quite some time. For those who dont have the iphone, it is available for $14.95 on http://www.handango.com and also http://www.jeyo.com and currently supports only iphone and windows mobile/smartphone above WM5. and of course you need an unlimited internet connection.

Mark,

You should see 3G if it is connected properly. If not, there may be a network problem, or problem with your iPhone.

If it can’t connect to 3G it will say E (Edge), or if it can’t connect to edge, it will say G (which is even slower). If it can’t get any of these, a circle will be displayed.

Not to be a party pooper, and to each his own; but I’ve been using most of the ‘new’ features on the iPhone for over 10 years now on my imate, and HTC mobiles, and I’ve been using 3g for the last couple of years; with a “copy/paste” function to boot πŸ™‚

Not really saying anything, as I’m sure the iphone experience is smoother, and prettier; but the way the hype is, you’d think that we were using square wheels, and we thought that the Earth was flat, before we were graced with the presence of the iphone.

The iphone is great, and has probably surpassed HTC in usability; however it is not as groundbreaking as we are led to believe, and to borrow a common phrase from the Mac enthusiasts, they copied it from Windows (mobile)

Thats so true, i have been using most of these features like podcast and internet tethering on my nokia N95 and now n97 with no problems at all and just out of the box. its not a big deal.

I did not want to talk about it, but you want imagine the things that i do with my nokia. I agree the interface and smoothness of iphone is much cooler. but regarding the specs, no way to compare it to nokia or HC.

I’ve been sing Wunder Radio since the very first release and its great. Unfortunately, some channels aren’t live broadcasting as they claim. Some channels are only offered through 3g, I’m depending on the wi-fi link but your idea is really great!

My E63 did it, and my E71 does it, I have Internet TV and Internet Radio at a click of a button. I’ve always streamed Kuwait radios when I am in the Gym, but its here in Australia, unlimited phone calls, internet and txt for only 25 KD a month, I have lastFM, 6 different emails (including uni), all my business applications and 3 different GPS (from Garmin to Gmaps+external gps).

I just cannot be any happier.

to mentabolism & everyone who got me links, thnx πŸ™‚
those were surely useful.. yet, im still lost.. im gonna be needing to be more inforemed πŸ˜€

im no expert when it comes to technology… for ex, what is 3G?

dude it isn’t satellite radio if its streaming through an internet connection , you are just listening to radio stations that stream their content regardless of the original format. welcome to internet radio ( you had it available on your e71 by the way)
