Sky Cinemas – The new Cinema Operator in town

skycinemas

I’ve been hearing rumblings of a third cinema operator coming to Kuwait for awhile now but I didn’t think it would ever happen. The market is just too small and Cinescape is so dominant that I figured it just wouldn’t make financial sense for a third cinema operator to want to come in and compete. I guess I was wrong.

Sky Cinemas is the new cinema operator in town and they’ve just soft launched their first location in Dalal Complex on Salem Al Mubarek Street. If you’re wondering what building that is, it’s the new tower opposite Zahra Complex [Map]. Right now they have one theater operational and it’s playing Ant-Man but by next week they’ll have two more theaters operational as well as more movies to choose from including the new Mission Impossible.

Their ticket prices are KD3.5 which is exactly like Grand Cinemas and Cinescape plus they don’t have IMAX, so I don’t really see what their advantage is. They’re also located right in the middle between Cinescape Fanar and Cinescape Marina Mall so they have their work cut out for them. If you’re interested in trying them out, check out their website [Here]

The mall they’re located in is fairly empty at the moment with I think 4 shops open only.

Cinescape or KNCC company has a major stronghold because of all the cinemas that have been here since the beginning of 60s & 70s.

But slowly things are moving in. Grand cinemas with Hamra & Gate. As you mentioned Sky cinema is another. I saw another one in Khaitan, called TRIO cinemas in TRIO mall. I think the markets are opening up slowly, hope it keeps the prices in control compared to right now where its head to ‘Ridiculous’.

Cinescape literally had a legal monopoly for 50 years FYI. The reason you see more companies now is their exclusivity contract expired and competition is now allowed – but like you’ve noticed 50 years of monopoly will not go away overnight.

since there are very few entertainment here , people c lot of movies here. Why the price is always high. In dubai cinema tickets cost approx 2.8 kwd. cinemas r the only form of entertainment available for expats here. y it is not made affordable for them. here new born also had to pay full ticket cost. in other places it does not work like that.

most expats are from India and south asia. cinema isn’t the only entertainment available for indian. they (south asian expats) have concerts, celebrities perform for them, theatrical plays, festival, and so on.

remember south asian are majority of expats, not westerners

More of the same.

There is no proper cinema in Kuwait that shows classical, independent, or foreign movies. I am sure there is a market for this.

yeah thank god it’s not a proper cinema, it’s much more casual and perfect for watching indie and classic films with friends. please don’t come!

I don’t see the point of any of this… not only are the movies censored, it’s same small number of movies playing everywhere. This new cinema is literally walking distance from Fanar, Laila Gallery, Plaza and Marina malls.

i checked sky cinemas website and tried to book tickets for 2 Bachelor guys .. they allow you to book in the lower 3 rows only for bachelors .. and the rest rows is for family’s !!! Wth sky cinema!

at grand the first 3 seats exclusive for family’s and the rest is mixed .. not the opposite as sky cinemas !!
