New Song: Hindi Majnoon by Zahed Sultan

Local musician and artist Zahed Sultan has a new track out and I really like the new more personal approach he’s been taking with his music. His previous track “Layl” was related to his father while “Hindi Majnoon” is about how he was bullied for being half Indian while growing up in Kuwait. I’ve embedded the YouTube link above but the song is also on Spotify and Apple Music.

That someone should be pilloried for being half Indian half Arab in Kuwait goes beyond the pale. There are several prominent merchant families right here in Kuwait such as the Al Shayas and the Jashanmals who have a strong India connexion to them. The Jashanmals are originally Sindhis from India who moved to Iraq and subsequently to Kuwait in the 1920s. Further and more, have it on reasonably good authority the dearly departed Baba Amir was himself half Indian. It’s strange that a country that traded in the Indian rupaaiah 60 years ago is now obdurate in embracing its deep historic, trade and cultural linkages with India. Sad and most unfortunate.

Jashinmals were Indian, 100% Indian not Arab at all. Al Shaya’s like many other trading families traded in India- not Indian. And the Amir wasn’t Indian. You don’t have to conflate things to make a point but yes people shouldn’t be bullied for that.

I find it so ridiculous when people talk about half Kuwaiti and pure Kuwaiti as if it something to be proud of and being a half is not. It also reminds me of the way people are referred to in Hogwarts- half blood, pure blood. In the end, you are all people. Culture, differences and races should be appreciated and not looked down upon.
