Pizzeria Amami

amami1

Pizzeria Amami used to be located in Salmiya near AUK and behind Smash Burger, but last week they moved to a new location in Symphony Mall. I hadn’t tried the place until earlier today when I passed by for lunch with a friend of mine.

The place was empty and quiet so we picked a table near the window overlooking the Gulf Road. Once we sat down an Italian waitress came up to us with the menus. From what I could tell everybody working there was Italian which was a great first impression. The menu on the other hand was fairly disappointing being just A4 sheets of paper printed and then enclosed in transparent plastic. Mine was all bent and it just looked very cheap. The waitress recommended us the Parmigiana di Melanzane to start with which was fried eggplant with cheese and tomato sauce. I also ended up ordering the closest thing to a simple mushroom pizza I could find on the menu which was a pizza called Capricciosa containing, tomato sauce, mozzarella, mushrooms, olives and artichoke (I asked them not to include the artichoke). The waitress asked me if I wanted fresh mozzarella with my pizza and I figured the alternative was frozen mozzarella or something so I said yes. Once the bill arrived later I realized by fresh mozzarella she meant extra cheese on my pizza. Not cool but it must have been a lost in translation moment.

The first thing that arrived was the Parmigiana di Melanzane starter. Although the presentation wasn’t appealing the dish did taste better than it looked. But, I’d still order something else next time since it tasted more like a pizza topping than a standalone starter. Our main dishes arrived once we were done, my pizza was pretty big and looked delicious. I was hesitant to ask the waitress for ketchup since I know it’s usually frowned upon at Italian pizzerias but turns out they didn’t have any issues with ketchup and I was able to get a bottle. The pizza was good although I found it pretty heavy the rest of the day. I left there feeling like I had eaten something very unhealthy but I think that had to do with the fact my pizza had all the extra cheese on it which I hadn’t asked for (I should have said no to fresh mozzarella).

My biggest issue with the place was with their prices. My pizza cost KD5.5 while my friends Penne Al Formaggio (cheese pasta) cost KD6. With two mains, the starter, three soft drinks and 750fils for the extra cheese, the bill came out to KD19.250. The pizza barely makes it into my top 5 favorite pizzas in Kuwait ranking, maybe at #5 so combine that with the restaurants atmosphere and interior which was bland and the total experience just wasn’t worth it for me. If you’re interested in trying out the place they’re located on the Mezzanine floor of Symphony Mall in Salmiya [Map]. They’re open daily from noon till 11PM except for Fridays when they open a bit later at 2PM. Their phone number is 25770733 but the waitress told me it will only be active from next week.

hmmmm, off the top of my head it would look like this:

1) OFK (their Funghi Con Panna haven’t tried anything else)
2) Solo Pizza (their garlic bread is the best as well nom nom nom)
3) Margherita (terrible service this past weekend but food still good)
4) Papa Johns (late night munchies)
5) Amami (without the extra cheese)

Actually I just realized, if you don’t include international franchises we really don’t have a lot of options for pizza places.

people are kinda retarded in Kuwait !!
they spend 5-6 KD on a pizza ! WTF ?? its just a pizza that won’t cost 1 KD homemade (and tastes better cuz I can top it with whatever I want)
and a total of 19.250 for that order is just a rip off..

I’ve been noticing that all new restaurants either sell Italian food or burgers , which both cost nothing especially Italian food (an ordinary pasta can cost 4 kd without any protein !!) and the food doesn’t taste good at all.
Allah y3eeeeeeeeena

Well thats not a fair assessment, I’m willing to pay KD5-6 for a pizza even though the actual cost might just be KD1. The thing is when you’re paying that much for a pizza you’re expecting a certain dinning experience in return which I think they’re lacking in.

You are ignoring the cost of renting the place and the salaries of the employees. Try opening a restaurant in a mall and bill your customers 1.250KD for pizzas, then lets see how long you can survive before going bankrupt.

The end customer doesn’t care about the business expenses. if the combination of service+atmosphere+taste & overall quality is overvalued, I rather watch that business go bankrupt than my wallet go less amount in X KD.

I went a couple of times to their old place. I liked the atmosphere and the service was good. It really looked different from the other more commercial restaurants and had its own character.
I’m disappointed that they moved. Judging from the picture it looks less cosy than before but I must check it out myself because if the food quality and staff are still the same it would still be one of my favorite Italian restaurants.

I didnt try their new place but, my collegues and i eat there weekly because we actually found their pizza extremely good. Although we didnt choose your order.

The only downside was the price. Ignoring that, it is one of my favorite pizzasand to us, their pizza are light :/

Italian staff? Something tells me that waitress doesn’t get KD120/month. Of course the food is going to be super expensive.

Ketch up on Pizza, obviously written by a food expert. Hahahaha…… Have to wonder if u have ever been to Italy….

Ketchup taste is overwhelming and it destroys all other tastes and flavors that you’re supposed to enjoy when eating Italian food.

Sami, I believe that everyone is entitled to their own opinions and tastes. No need to impose your own on others. Cheers to enjoying your pizza however you like it

When a server give you the option of fresh mozzarella, it means you can have the standard processed mozzarella that most pizzerias use, or the type that is packaged in brine or a water solution to retain its moisture. It is softer and creamier than the packaged stuff. There is a considerable price difference. Sultan Center sells both types and you can check out the price difference there.

Dominos charges KD4.600 for a large thin crust pizza… I would personally spend an extra KD1 for a pizza made by authentic Italian pizziolos in an upscale restaurant with a nice view overlooking the Gulf.

I like the decor of Pizzaria Amami and found the furnishings to be of high quality. But what I really like is the fact that it is an Italian restaurant run by an all Italian staff.

That might be the case in some places but in this specific case it was a lost in translation moment. By fresh mozzarella she actually meant extra cheese since the menu only had an option for extra cheese for 750fils and my bill clearly says extra cheese for 750fils.

HI Mark
I Like your blog very much and I find it very usefull but I cannot accept someone to review and Italian Restaurant in a good or bad way if one puts ketchup on the pizza. At this point you should try Pizza Hut that is fried pizza and maybe that could improve the taste. In order to review properly a cuisine you must know how to eat it and appreciate it

I think they mean Buffalo Mozzarela by fresh. Buffalo mozzarella is a mozzarella made from the milk of the domestic water buffalo. It is bit softer, creamier, and stringier in texture. It’s taste is more robust, saltier, and full-milky-flavored. The only thing I do not like about it is that your pizza will become soggy if you use a lot. (Usually it is used in Neapolitan pizzas)

The other thing is yes 4-5 KD for a Neapolitan pizza is very expensive. I tried the best two Neapolitan pizzerias in the world (both in Napoli), and it was only for 1 KWD (normal margarita of tomato sauce, basil, olive oil, parmesan, and mozzarella). 2-3 KWD for other kinds of pizzas.

I went there 2 days ago I ordered a 4 kd salad and and it came without dressing.
I had to ask the waiter for olive oil to mix the salad
The pizza was ok

They’re gone. Closed. Still showing up on Talabat for some reason but the location in Salmiya is kaput. No sign, nothing. Hopefully someday someone can find out what happened…

Hey they have an insta and fb account which gets updated regularly. They are moving to a new location – to be announced soon. As of now they are fully available for any catering services or events.
