Why Burgan Bank Sucks While Traveling

My primary bank is NBK but due to various issues, mainly this one time when their ATM network was down and I wasn’t able to withdraw money before traveling, I decided to open a secondary bank account with Burgan Bank as a backup. I chose Burgan Bank primarily because they were located in the building adjacent to my apartment building and I liked how the branch looked like. As I found out recently though, turns out for traveling, Burgan Bank was the wrong bank to go with.

Last month while in Cape Town the owner of the bed & breakfast I was staying in asked me if I could pay him in cash since that way he wouldn’t have to pay the credit card transaction fee. So I went to an ATM to withdraw money using my Burgan Bank card. The ATM had a limit on how much I could withdraw at once so I had to withdraw the amount in two parts. After withdrawing the first half I tried to withdraw the second half and got an error. I then received a message on my phone from Burgan Bank saying my card had been declined and I needed to contact them. So I called Burgan Bank up using roaming and after getting a hold of an employee I was told that due to security reasons, Burgan Bank has placed a limit on South Africa and that I could only withdraw a maximum of KD25 a day. I went apeshit over the phone. I told the employee I’m on vacation and they have no right to limit my spending to just KD25. I told him KD25 wouldn’t be enough for me to spend per day and I also needed to pay for my accommodation now and I couldn’t because of this stupid limit. He told me he would put in a request to increase my spending limit temporarily. I was like I needed the limit lifted now so he put me on hold for a few minutes before letting me know my limit was lifted.

I came back to Kuwait and basically forgot about the whole incident until this past weekend while I was in Bahrain I ran into another issue. On the day I arrived to Bahrain I tried to use my Burgan Bank ATM card but it got declined. I thought it might have been something with the sellers machine and decided to use my NBK card for the purchase instead. I didn’t use my card for the rest of the trip since I was using my NBK credit card. When I landed in Kuwait Saturday night I headed to the Burgan Bank ATM machine at the airport to withdraw money to pay for parking but I got a declined error again and a message on my phone saying the bank declined my card and I should contact them. So I called Burgan Bank and ask their customer support why they’re declining my transactions and the employee told me it was due to security reasons. I was like what?! He was like when someone uses the ATM card in two different countries in the same day they automatically block my card and I need to call the bank to unblock it. I went apeshit again. I told the employee I had breakfast at the airport and then traveled to Bahrain and wanted to use my card there, are you telling me I am not allowed to do that? Are you saying that if I have breakfast at the airport I am not allowed to use my card again until 24 hours later after arriving to my destination? He was like it’s their policy. I was like I can’t be the only Burgan Bank customer that has complained about this. I was literally yelling at this point and asked him if Burgan Bank customers ever travel??? I told him this was the dumbest shit I’ve ever heard and that IF they were to block my card it should be when someone tries to withdraw a large amount like a KD1,000 or KD5,000 but not KD10! I told him I was fed up with them and that I hated being put in awkward situations because of them. I told him they have no right to keep blocking my card like that because they have no idea what situation I could be in while abroad and needed money but because of their incompetence I would end up being screwed. I told the employee to unblock my card and to put a note to never ever block it again. I told him even if five different people in five different countries try to withdraw money from my card at the same time to let them. Even if someone in Nigeria is trying to withdraw all the money on the card to let them. I just couldn’t handle it anymore, I hate being treated like a child by my bank. If they’re concerned about any transaction on my card they should call me and check on it like NBK does. But to block my card without warning is ridiculous.

So in the next few days when I have some free time I’m going to sadly be closing my account with Burgan Bank. I say sadly because I actually love the branch near my house and have had a pretty good experience with them. Even though both their app and online banking sucks I liked passing by their branch and their bank employees are actually really friendly. But their security policies have completely killed it for me. The whole point of opening an account with them was so that I have a backup system to use when I travel and the one thing I wanted them for they’ve failed in miserably. Now I need to find another bank instead so if anyone has any recommendations let me know below.

Update: Burgan Bank ended up calling me regarding my post and according to them they’ve reengineered some of the processes so that people don’t end up having these issues again. This is the email they sent me:

Dear Mark,

Thank you for raising your customer experience with us in regards to recent issues on your debit cards, firstly we regret the inconvenience caused to you. Due to the recent spate of frauds in card related transactions across the region each bank including ourselves had put in parameters in order to protect & safe guard our customers. same thing. you have to call them too lift the block.

i withdrew cash once when i was in HK. then got blocked in Dubai airport (had to use my credit card). at Kuwait airport, still blocked.

called their Hayakom number and was given a specific mobile number to call.

the solution to this is to inform them beforehand that you will be travelling and not to block the account.

Hi Mark,

I have been with Gulf Bank for years and never had a problem like you.. Mark you, when I have been planning to be away for a while, I have always told my branch manager a day or so in advance. currently in Australia with absolutely no problem

Cheers!

dear all

gulf bank service is disappointing too

1. Cant use the danah card as a KNet card its only allows deposits. So wanted to transfer amt to my current account to pay for a car … transfer limit on phone kd 500… limit online kd 1000/- in the branch they wud charge me kd 1 for the transfer..why no idea… withdraw money from danah and deposit in current account at the same time .. no charge … funny rules…
2. charges sms service fee of kd 10 even though we don’t want to … and call them in advance and email them .. no reply (its a small amt but its my damn money )
3. Credit card needs to be cancelled 60 days before.. rule no telebanking service agent knows ……..

thanks

This whole story is such a downer because it reminded me of what I went through with my bank in America, Wells Fargo. They used to do the exact same thing to me. It’s not just Burgan Bank, it’s a global epidemic it seems haha.

It’s common practice in America to notify your bank before you travel so that they know your identity isn’t being stolen when your card is being used in multiple places/countries.

They don’t just assume you travel because if they do and your identity is being stolen you’d call them going apeshit as well.. My best advice is to just let it go. This isn’t at all unique to Burgan Bank and don’t let it get to you to that extent. You’re only compromising your health by stressing out.

That might be common practice in American but that’s because Americans don’t travel abroad as often as we do in Kuwait. Burgan Bank should apply a similar policy to NBK where if they notice an odd transaction they should call you to verify it.

I’ve been in a situation before where I couldn’t use any of my cards and I needed to do so urgently and it was really messed up. Its why I have two bank accounts now and unless you’ve been in a situation like that before you’re not going to understand why having your card blocked without any notification while you’re in a foreign country is the dumbest shit they can do.

yeah right, notice an odd transaction indeed.

i had to call NBK to unblock my wife’s card for an online air ticket purchase.

apparently, anything not from kuwait/gcc/usa website must be “odd” for them?

I used to use Couchsurfing.com but no matter how big a gift I used to give my hosts for having me stay in their extra room, I’d always feel guilty, I always felt like a moocher. That’s why I’m using AirBnB these days. G-d I love it. Isn’t it great?

Boubyan, simply put the best service. the easiest app to use, and you always get a VIP treatment if your visiting there branches.

I currently have Wells Fargo in the states too. I have to call them to make “travel plans” before traveling so they don’t block my card. Its not too bad to be honest.

What happens if you use credit card outside Kuwait. Isn’t credit card created for those type of situations. Why are you using an atm?

Commercial Bank of Kuwait

-They have 24 hour branch in the airport.

-ATM works in most countries.

-They call you if they have any security concerns.

-The have the best prepaid visa’s (can withdraw cash from them unlike other banks)

-If u need a new ATM card they print you a new one from any branch while standing.

This ^

I’m with CBK for more than 5 years, traveling without any problems. If they suspect anything they will call you, but won’t block your card in advance. Actually my dad had 500KD refunded to his account few months ago, although he has drawn the money himself and now they won’t take it back. lol

No they don’t call. I am a student in the US and have a card with CBK. I had my card blocked and had to call them from the U.S. for them to unblock it. Then had an argument with the call center guy because he wanted me to call them every 4 months to activate it again. When I told him that this is bullshit and that I am abroad for longer than that, he said the bank is going to activate the card for as long as I want as long as they hold no responsibility if any fraud happened on the card.

That’s just 1 story. They are a nightmare in general.

Most banks will decline your card if they see suspicious activity, it happened to me with NBK more than once while traveling. The best way to avoid this regardless of bank is to call them ahead of time and let them know you’re in that country.

I disagree, with my experience NBK have never blocked my card but they have called me on more than one occasion to check on suspicious activities.

In any case with Burgan Bank even if I call them it wouldn’t matter since their system automatically blocks your card if its used in two different countries in the same day. So if you have breakfast at Kuwait Airport and then get to Heathrow Airport and want to use your card to buy a train pass you’re out of luck.

I mean you can disagree but it’s not an opinion, NBK have blocked my card without telling me. It’s the only account I have too, the first time I was stranded waiting to pay for something and had to do a roaming call for the 20 minutes it took for them to unblock it.

Had my card blocked by NBK. I carried out 2 transactions, the first got through, the second one of lower value got blocked. It got screwed over anyway because I was buying a flight ticket home and was at the airport when it happened. Had to scrape clean my other accounts and borrow from my friends. I was in an embarrassing situation and frustrated, but the airline staff explained that it was a common thing. I did not flip at the bank though, since they were only doing their job.

Well my choices are embarrassing situation which I walk away from or card fraud where somebody makes an unauthorized transaction using my card, for which I will hold the bank responsible. Lengthy process of following up and eventually either the bank or me would be held liable to lose the amount due to carelessness. The bank is covering its behind by scrutinizing suspicious transactions.
I think the alternative to this is a pre paid credit card. Worst case scenario, if your card is compromised, you lose only the amount on the card.

This isnt my credit card that is being blocked though its my atm card which even if someone had my number wouldnt be able to use it unless they had my pin code as well. So for someone in a foreign country to use it would mean they managed to get a hold of my atm card and pin code while i am in kuwait and the likelyhood for that to happen is very very unlikely so their extra security is overkill in this scenario.

But then again if they really were concerned they should call me instead of automatically blocking it.

I had a bad experience with Burgan Bank airport branch too, I went there to encash a check, after handing over the near 2000 KD cash to me the teller asked me to step aside so he could serve other customers I told him I am not going to leave the counter until I count the money he was like please step aside so I got upset and raised my voice at which point the branch manager kicked in and repeated exactly what the teller was saying “Step aside”.

I was very annoyed and I thought they were insulting me so I told the manager this is a bad way of treating the customer and I should not be leaving this place until I count the cash, he said there is a room over there you can sit in there and count your money I was like how am I suppose to prove to them if the amount is not correct, I asked him that and he said our teller has already counted it in the machine.

I was like I don’t trust your machine, I only trust my own counting, that machine is for your satisfaction not mine.

Some people really don’t make sense, customer service at its worse.

so by your logic, if someone drawn 20,000KD he should also not step aside and count his money for the rest of the day, wasting customers time ?

Yes even if it was 20k kwd I would still want to count it, serving other customers is their job, mine is to ensure I get my money right.

NBK did exactly the same to me when I had travelled to the states. Used my card twice in same store and card blocked and then had the expense of phoning to get unblocked.

I used my NBK credit card twice in Thailand. As a matter of fact, I used DOUBLE transactions at the SAME place within the SAME hour. Never got my card blocked. Happy NBK and KFH customer ๐Ÿ™‚

Dear Excellent Sir Mark

I am Prince Abuja Jojo Benihana of Nigeria and an inheritor of $100,000,000 of my late grand-aunty’s assets. She died when a Vespa rammed into her and now, out of all the people in the world, I have chosen you to share my wealth with.

Please provide me your Burgan Bank Credit Card number, no worries – its only to transfer my wealth into your account.

I love you.

Jojo Benihana ๐Ÿ˜€

“Please provide me your Burgan Bank Credit Card number, no worries” or he will definitely sue you for not providing your credit card details to him! O.o

Thank god someone complained about this on a blog because this scenario happened to me exactly but in different countries. It really made me pissed off and ruined my trip. when i came back to kuwait i went to burgan to close my account i had to wait another 45 days for them to close my account which is unheard of. Other banks in Kuwait usually open the limit on credit cards when you travel and if they feel something is going wrong with the account they usually call you for verification before freezing the card ( credit card or Knetcard). BURGAN BANKS SUCKS and the customer service need to get a reward for not knowing anything .

I’ve been using KFH cards for travel with no issues. My AUB card doesn’t work in Kuwait sometimes so I don’t use it for travel. In my opinion, KFH had the best online application and web site. I also hear good things about Boubyan. Try them or KFH but stay away from AUB.

I would recommend Gulf Bank after three transactions is when they decline your card and also you can call and tell them when your traveling to unblock your card so no surprises happen aboard. The web interface and application are very easy to use. Gulf Bank accounts had the best accounts but now you can only get the basic account type.

Why don’t you just tell them earlier? :s you mentioned it’s next to your house and they are really friendly………

I use my Gulf Bank ATM when travelling. I always call and advise them beforehand of the countries I’m going to so they don’t suspect fraud. My ATM was used fraudulently in London once, so I made a habit of calling before travelling. No problems sine then.

Dormant bank accounts are the ones usually targeted for unusual activity by the banks. Africa, in general, is a hotbed of online fraud. Plus, it’s not a common destination for people travelling from Kuwait.

This procedure, while inconvenient, was for your protection, as well as the bank. 700 pounds were withdrawn from my account via ATM in London while I was in Kuwait. I complained, and the bank launched an investigation and immediately refunded all my money. For that, I put up with the hassle of having to call them every time I travel.

This happens all the time. One time I was paying for my hotel accommodation using my KFH credit card, but the payment didn’t go through. I called them asking them what was the problem, they told me that KFH themselves did not allow the payment because the name that appears on the credit card statement has the word casino in it, as in “JW Marriott Hotel and CASINO” !!

For me NBK is the best bank for travelling, never had any problems with them.

My main account is with NBK but I have a backup account with AUB (BKME) and because they aren’t a ‘popular’ bank the lines are always low and the branches are almost empty all the time.

I only use it for shopping locally, so I don’t need too much. However I heard a rumor that if you try to buy alcohol when travelling or using it at a nightclub it gets declined (Islamic bank etc) but I cannot confirm this.

I suggest you with Gulf Bank. I travel very frequently between countries and never have I faced such an issue. However, I always keep NBK as my secondary account and maintain enough balance to feed me for few days abroad. Needless to say that I don’t trust Kuwait banks enough.

Gulf Bank? Are you serious? I opened a premium account with them. In Bahrain I couldn’t pay for anything using a Point of Sale machine because their cards are not supported (wtf?)

Spoke to be bank manager and he said “yes, we face the same problem – I suggest you get a credit card because it does not have this issue”.

Closed my account the same day.

I cannot advise u which bank but I could certainly tell u NBK is no better. I had my card stopped once when I was traveling and the call center excuse was ‘the amount was too big and we blocked it for ur security’ it was 100 kd btw….1- who are u to judge what amount is big or not…2- who authorized u to take such a decision on my account 3- at what point will u stop acting as if u created banking security!

Globally they have security protocols in place to avoid theft during traveling, none how ever is on the expense of leaving u in such an awkward situation, they simply innovate with technology and deploy customer centered solutions. This has been the case for quite sometime, so not a random incident.

Also for NBK, any use of card in a recurring daily transaction in or out of kuwait, especially on the web they will automatically block your card and need to call them every 24 hours to unblock. They refuse to keep it unblocked for a longer period, even if it’s the same destination and calling daily!!!!

If withdrawing is ur only problem and nothing else, stick to burgan and negotiate or find a way to sign a form to keep it unblocked, its not worth the shift they are all the same just in different ways…otherwise, try a foreign bank.

As we have discussed numerous of times, all banks in Kuwait are sh!t. Your value as a customer is equal to the amount of Dinars in your bank account. With so many millionaires in Kuwait, it is highly unlikely for you or any of us to be treated as a valued customers.

With that being said, no bank have positives over-weighing another’s negatives. For example you’re complaining that Burgan is terrible when traveling, but the branch is close from your house, they treat you personally well and you probably know other advantages of using them. Some people may claim Gulf Bank is better… but then you’re going to be be left out without online backing!!

NBK has a superior online banking, but don’t even consider them for taking a lone… their tactics as known among Kuwaitis is increasing your loan, making you fail to make payment and then send you to prison to make your relatives pay them back!!! WTF?! Boubyan Bank is offering you Islamic financing so you’re safe from refinancing your loan however they’re not far away from NBK’s tricks and they make you sign promissory which they also use in a very nasty way. You can avoid that disadvantage by going with KFH but then again many people don’t like dealing with KFH staff!!!

Tough choices, personally I don’t respect who does not respect me… I hold very little respect to most local banks. I love my NatWest and Raiffeisen Bank services. They both treat me as if I was a diplomat or a billionaire… they both provided me direct phone numbers to my account managers who personally take care of all my dealings with the bank… and if you look at my accounts balance, its really nothing more than few hundreds! Why do they respect me and take care of me? They are a respectable banks. Simple.

Mark,
I would recommend CBK over NBK and other banks anyday – service wise and offerings wise they are top notch. I have travelled extensively with them and they have been almost good.

The almost is the shi!!y process they have of some bank processing they do between 6-9pm or something like that. There’s a chance that your transaction will get rejected during that time period. I followed up with them a million times on this but they haven’t fixed it. But outside of that window they are pretty good.

The choice I seem to be hearing from people is Al-Ahli bank and I’m thinking for reviewing their offerings and moving to a bank where a credit card really works as its supposed to do – 100% no matter where I am!

ok, so lots of your readers are all reporting about NBK blocking their cards after multiple transactions in a foreign country…… My credit card was stolen whilst I was on holiday, I tried to cancel it on the NBK app on my phone and tried calling the bank from the number they listed for calling from outside Kuwait( nobody answered, I tried many times). I went straight to the police and got a police report. I was in Paris at the time and I knew there was an NBK there, I even went to the manager to express my concern that I had been trying to reach the bank to check my cards were cancelled, they let me chat to someone from the call centre in Kuwait, I was assured my cards were cancelled and I was informed that my card had been used many times but not to worry and that my money would be refunded. Upon my return to Kuwait, I was told that my card had not been cancelled before the transactions and therefore they would not refund my money. I explained that I tried to use their app to cancel my cards, but the app only had the option of restricting the ATM card and that nobody answered the phone when I called the bank direct. NBK have told me repeatedly that there must have been a fault with the international phone lines, they also say it’s their policy not to refund money to your credit card if it is reported stolen after the transactions have taken place . My card was used multiple times within an hour of it being stolen. A very sweet employee at NBK advised me to leave my Credit card in my hotel room next time I travel. She also told me that NBK are updating their app to now include the cancellation of Credit cards. Well that’s just great, it doesn’t help me get my 800KD back though does it. So while lots of your readers are complaining that there cards were blocked after being used in Foreign countries here I am thinking why oh why didn’t they block mine?!?
It seems like we all have a story to tell , it all boils down to the same sh** though, customer service is nowhere near that in the UK or America where I’m sure my money would have been refunded without doubt……the banks treat their customers with care and do their best to keep their customers!
Good luck Mark in finding the perfect bank in Kuwait , personally I don’t think there is one. I’m still chasing my case with NBK …. I wonder how many of your readers have had a similar experience.

Same as kfh it happened to my family they used their card
In the airport and then at a hotel in dubai it was declined
They called kfh, kfh staff told them you must call us before you travel
So we can put instructiones on the account that the person will
Travel to this country on this date and when will they come back

My mom had a bad experience with Gulf Bank, She used her card for purchase in Belgium and the bank blocked it and my mom called the bank and they said she would have to visit her branch IN PERSON in order to unblock the card, how crazy is that?!

i can withdraw over 3000KD a day in south africa with my Burgan Card. i have no idea what kind of card and account you have with them

customer care in Kuwait is generally bullshit, i am with Zain for long long time (my main line) and i have ooredoo & viva,
every month for a while now they cut my line although it has the same month’s bill only (51 kd plan / month – contract finished) and i notified them many time, NO USE…. i told them today i will change to ooredoo, their simple answer
we cant please 2 million customer!!!
regarding banks, i have been with NBK for 28-29 years, by far its the best available in kuwait, yet they have some issues every now and then, overall, they are excellent
i have another account with CBK as back up account only, i think they are good
i wanted to open account with HSBC but they dont have for customers, only Corporate
i heard lots of great reviews about Boubyan, they say its excellent, did not try it
at the end, my Bank of America account is the best, i think it has the best service i had

NBK blocked my cc card while I was purchasing my 2nd air ticket from an online site and I was in kwt…had to call the bank to unblock it.
these banks need to have a way that we can unblock our cards through the online portal or mob bank app as its not always convenient to call the bank & pay a huge roaming bill especially when they post adverts on their phone systems.

Dear Mr. Mark,
We are always ready to serve you and be part of your daily activities and trips with pleasure.
Don’t hesitate to contact us and/or visit the nearest branch to your location.

Dear NBK, unless u are an automated bot with an automated response. Could u please have the curtsy of enlighting us with why u beleive he or anyone of us should consider NBK. The least we expect after having people including myself share ‘failing’ experience with ur bank is to atleast answer or correct our statements. But having such a response is either a bad content strategy or u haven’t read and just responded to the title of this post! Either the case proves the point of how u are disconnected when it comes to ur customer understanding. #epicfail

Why bro! Their response is out of this world. Everyone is ranting about how they have problems with their ATM blocking travel, including NBK with over 20 mentions in the same post. So NBK response is ‘we would serve u with pleasure, pass by any branch’! A proper response would either be a product that could solve the problem or clarification on why the overkill with the security… that’s why I think it was very random and immature to have such a response. They could have simply stayed quiet if they have nothing to say. Its like u complaining about a service to the manager and after 30 minutes he tells u: hi how can I help u today! ๐Ÿ™‚

My main account is with NBK… but I have Ahli’s Emirates World Master card… Limit of 5000, never had any problems. Was in the US for about a month, and my limit was reached (no problem whatsoever). You do get Priority pass (access for you and a guest to lounges in 600 airports), also, the Emirates miles. I pay 100 KD per year, but every year I get flights on Emirates worth about 300 KD. Totally worth it.

Not the best website/customer care, but the card makes up for it.

I’m not one to post comments, or to troll at all, but I feel so passionately about this that I feel compelled to scream it to every innocent bank-account-holding Kuwait resident.

I have lived and worked in 3 countries and tried my fair share of banks, if that counts for anything. I will therefore say this with full confidence: Burgan Bank is the worst banking institution I have ever seen, dealt with, heard of, or had the misfortune of being forced to use. In fact, they must be one of the worst commercial institutions in general, in the world (in my humble opinion).

The agency I’ve worked for here has them as a client, and we were therefore all forced to open a bank account with them, otherwise for the first few months I had to go deposit cash or a cheque into my primary NBK account (so I’m in the same boat as Mark). I was then given a Premier account.

Over the course of the last couple of years, I’ve had my salary deposited into an account without being sent an ATM card for 3 weeks, I’ve had my account blocked while abroad, I’ve had my account blocked while in Kuwait, I’ve had transactions that were apparently backed up for months on their system and was all of a sudden stuck with KD800 in overdraft, I’ve been ignored for over an hour at their branches while the Premier Banking employee sips tea and coffee with his little friend, I’ve had my online banking gateway blocked, I’ve had many “comments” put on my file and nobody ever gets back to me or calls me back, I’ve seen them lie to colleagues and friends and say that their system is down in the branch because they want to close early on Thursday (but when we called their Marketing Manager to check he said nothing was wrong), and I’ve had a colleague walk into a branch only to find every single employee – including security guards – off their desks and lined in the middle of the branch for prayer time. How the hell my money can feel safe with them, I will never know.

Whatever you do folks, don’t use Burgan Bank. It will be a horrible, horrible experience (and it has been for every single person I know who’s had one with them).

As for Mark, my husband and I keep our savings in Gulf Bank, and they’ve been nothing but super helpful, courteous, and pleasant. Use Gulf Bank instead!

i realise this is old news but I feel I need to write again as to how disappointed I am with NBK, after my last comment on this page NBK asked me to contact them ….. I was slightly hopeful that I may get some result and promised myself that I would update the 248 readers with a success story if it happened, letting everyone know how great NBK really are. So, I emailed NBK, the following day I received a phonecall from someone at NBK asking for my civil ID number so they could follow up with my case……. And that was it. The end. I’m a very positive person so I still have hope …. IF I do hear from NBK again I will be sure to update. Sigh.

Mark, my wife who has her account with CBK, had a terrible experience with their prepaid cards. We took a prepaid card account with about 100 KD in it and when my wife tried to use it in India to pay for her shopping, it got declined. So,she called me in Kuwait and asked about it. Pretty embarrassing needless to say..As it was a weekend here i told her to use the local account there.
Long story short..we later approached CBK with the card, at the branch where it was taken. The guy coolly types something on his PC for about half an hour , gets up and comes back and hands it over. “Its OK now..we activated it now”
DUUUUHHHH….!!

No sorry..nothing..its just another day ..move along ..Neeext!
We cancelled the card.
