First Impression: Canon G11

I have a ton of cameras but recently I noticed I had a gap in my collection. I didn’t have a digital camera that fit between my Nikon DSLR and my Sony point & shoot. It’s not really a problem but since I love cameras it gave me an excuse to buy a new one. After a bit of research I had two options, the Canon S90 and the Canon G11. I passed by the local Canon dealer in Kuwait City to check them out and right then on the spot decided to go for the G11. The S90 is a great camera but it felt flimsy and it was too similar to my Sony W300 as in they’re both pocket cameras. If I got the S90 it would compete against my W300 and I wanted a camera that would compliment it instead. The G11 on the other hand was love at first sight, it felt indestructible and I loved the way it looked.

The dealer was selling the G11 for KD235, so I checked Amazon and noticed they were selling it for KD127. That’s over a hundred dinars difference!! So the same night I placed an order for the G11 from Amazon with one day shipping and the total came to KD133 (I sent it to my DHL mailbox so I didn’t pay the 8% NY tax). I received the camera today and it cost me KD14 in shipping and custom fees bringing the total cost of the camera to KD147. Thats still a HUGE difference compared to the price of the local dealer. I really want to buy stuff locally but some local dealers over price their products.

I’ve been playing with the camera all day and I love it. The camera is very solid, very well built and it sits really great in the hands. I love the old fashioned dials on top which makes setting the ISO or exposure extremely easy. The camera also shoots in RAW format which is one of the features I was looking for when researching cameras. The screen on the back also swivels so if you want to shoot something over your head or from your waist you can. The only downside to the camera is that it doesn’t fit in my pocket but I knew that before I bought it.

If you’re interested in this camera it’s available on Amazon for KD127.

i loved the g10 because it felt like a brick; has the feeling been compromised by the Vari-Angle LCD on the g11? does it feel like it might snap off?

Actually it feels more secure becaue you can flip the LCD inwards so its protected. that way you don’t have to worry about the screen getting scratched or breaking when you throw the camera in the bag.

Nobu: P5100? nope, last Nikon P&S I had was the nikon coolpix 2500. When it comes to point and shoots I only go with Sony and Canon. For DSLR’s I go for Nikons.

Actually the micro four thirds cameras lie between the G11 and DSLR. They’re bigger than the G11 but smaller than a dslr. I’ve scheduled it in as my next camera and specifically the Leica X1 (Dear santa, i’ve been a good blogger all year….)

Hmmm. I thought I read a review of it on your blog. Maybe it was somewhere else. Anyway, I own the P5100 and I’m quite satisfied with it, but, good luck with the Canon. It looks good.

Mark:

Leica’s are available at Best Electronics. Just passed by there today on the hunt for some lenses, Best has been a treasure of stuff you don’t see at the local suspects. Porsche design toasters? Leica cameras? Eneloop batteries? Its turning out to be one of my go-to places for electronics. Might want to put that in your note to Santa.

You are right re: the Canon dealer. Their “normal” markup is on average 100 KD, depending on the product. Its only worth it (even then, a difficult pill to swallow) to buy high end equipment from them for the local warranty. Their prices are insane. 200 KD difference between their price and the price in Dubai for the same lens!

Why not the G10 Mark? It shoots at 14.7megapixle compared to the 10 megapixel for the G11. Personally i don’t like the vari-angel LCD screen.. it has more chances of snapping.

zaitsev: what can you do with 14MP that you can’t with 10? The G11 has less noise at higher iso’s which was one of the selling points unlike the G10. I would rather have less noise than higher MP. If you’re worried about the LCD screen snapping then you don’t have to swivel it, keep it fixed.

Guys, I am looking for a camera that is not so professional. I want a camera that if I fully zoom, the image isn’t blurry and that captures an image fast. Please any suggestions I really need help !!

its huge .. thats the only down side i see in it .

i need a camera for traveling .. but definitely with highest specification .

wish me luck .

OMG!! the two cameras you were talking about were the exact same ones i was comparing! im so going for the G11 πŸ˜‰

Mark, why don’t you go to the dealer with a print out of your Amazon order and tell him to give you a similar price or risk losing the sale?

And didn’t you ask for a discount? That’s standard procedure in Kuwait!

can anyone recommend aa place to find good SLR film camera in kuwait? the only one i found in kuwait was a Pentax MZ 10, does anyone know where i can find canon or nikon manual film cameras? or if anyone uses the pentax is it any good?

Can you please tell me where is canon dealership in kuwait city,, I need to buy a camera with a dental kit ( I think they call it a ring flash or so)
to take picture of my cases

Quick questions:

1. Does it come with a memory card? If yes, what’s its capacity?
2. Does it have manual control of the zoom and focus? (adjustable from the lens?)
3. Is the lens removable in case I want to use a different lens?

1) no, no memory card
2) it has manual controls but not adjustable from the lens
3) no

I think what you’re looking for is a DSLR. This is a point & shoot.

Pediatric Dentistry: I am not sure what the street is called, do you know fahad al salem street? There is an NBK branch over there. its on the first street behind the NBK branch. if you are standing outside the NBK branch, keep it on your left and walk towards the Kuwait City graveyard, you will pass by a tall blue glass building then the fountains for that building, take a left there and walk straight. You should see a bunch of stationary shops on your left then the Toshiba dealer and then the canon dealer.

you can’t change the lens on the g11; but you can add a TC-DC58D tele converter to slightly increase the zoom to 7 optical but its not worth it considering the lens is $100 plus you need an adapter $40.

d,
I have a Nikon F-4 if you’re interested.
Sole owner, not a scratch & mild usage, but would sell it in its package not without lens, flash etc.

the s90 is good but has a bit slower shooting speed, worse battery, no hdmi, and doesn’t have the heavy metal feel. plus the s90 is half the weight not size; they are similar in size but the s90 is thinner. with all that its only $50 dollar cheaper. the g11 is defiantly the better choice.

I took the Canon Xti I bought online to the local dealer to check if it is covered by warranty. The seller smiled saying no, that’s why you should have bought it here so you get warranty. I said I will gladly throw this camera in the garbage if it ever needed fixing, and buy a brand new one, online, again. I’d still have paid less than buying it from you πŸ™‚

(I wasn’t exaggerating, they were selling it for over 200% more than what I paid online)

I bought the camera from Saudi for an equivalent of 200KD and have been very impressed with it.

I own a D-80 Nikon DSLR and wanted a point and shoot camera that is slighly smaller in size (i dont like the compact cameras though)

this felt perfect and it takes perfect shots. I have no experience of the G10 but overall i think Canon makes the best point and shoot cameras around (the night shots with a canon are second to none)

overall, an immaculate camera for novice to experienced photographers alike.

For all those looking for Canon official dealers:

Salhiya (Behind Kuwait Municipality)

Fax: 224715961

Head Office & Service Center (Al Rai )

Easy way to get to the Canon dealer in the city (although I didn’t see any ring flashes there a few days back):

1. From the Sheraton/Jahra Roundabout, take Fahad Al Salem Street.
2. Take RIGHT on the SECOND traffic light ( Ali Al Salem Street)
3. Take first LEFT (at the traffic light) (Salhiya Street). You know you are on the right street if the communications tower is directly in front of you.

Canon is on your left, parking is on your right. You can also take a U-turn and park.
