First Impression: Sony DSC-W300

Sony W300

After a very difficult decision I went ahead and purchased the Sony DSC-W300 digital camera. It was a difficult decision to make because the other camera options I was considering were all exceptionally good. I really wanted the Canon G9 for its SLR like features, the Ricoh GX100 for its strange look and the fact it took beautiful film like shots while the Sigma’s image quality alone was enough to tempt me to buy it. In the end though I REALLY needed a camera that I could carry around in my front pocket and I wouldn’t be able to do that with the three cameras I just mentioned. That brought down my choices to the Fuji F100fd, Nikon S600 and the Sony W300. The Fuji’s interface and usability I read would be a problem, the Nikon S600 lacked in certain features and I tried the S700 version at a Nikon dealer and didn’t like the feel of it so my final decision was to go with the Sony. I own two other Sony cameras at the moment, the Sony N1 and the Sony cult favorite the F717. Both cameras really exceeded my expectations and I never had problems with them so it only seemed fair I go with another Sony.

I purchased the camera from a store in Muthana Complex. The Sony dealer didn’t have the camera in stock and they were selling it for KD124.900, Carrefour also ran out of stock on the camera but they were selling it for KD123.900. But, I found a Sony reseller in Muthana who had the camera in stock and I managed to haggle my way and get the camera for KD118 with a 1GB Sony memory stick. The store if you are interested is located on the Mezzanine floor of Muthana between Andalus and the official Sony store.

First impressions so far is great. I’ve only taken shots in my office under the neon lights but the white balance did a good job. I also don’t need to turn on macro mode for macro shots, the camera automatically turns it on for me which is a nice little feature. I also shot inside at 1/30 with fairly shaky hands and the steady shot feature automatically came on to help keep my pictures sharp. The camera turns on and is ready to shoot in like under 2 seconds. Powering down takes around 3 which I actually find annoying since with my older Sony N1 I would hit the power off and then straight away put it into my pocket. Now I need to wait a second or two longer which means I have to change my habit. Other than that the only problem I can see at the moment is with the rear screen. With my Sony N1 the rear screen had a raised border around it which helped protect it from scratches, with the W300 the screen doesn’t have this border which makes it scratch friendly. This will only be an issue for me for the next week or two while the camera still has its “new smell” after that I won’t care much about it.

I will try to take a bunch of shots today in various conditions and post my second impressions. For now though I think I made the right decision. The camera has a ton of features and most importantly it fits into my pocket easily.

FYI: The reason I didn’t purchase the camera from Amazon was because after taxes it would cost me around KD100 then if you include shipping it would be around KD105 which isn’t a major saving. I would rather pay KD118 here, get the free memory stick, have a 1 year warranty and support a local store.

Update: This is a random shot I took outside on my way back from lunch. You can download the full untouched straight from the camera image by clicking [Here]. I shot this at the 8MP setting and not 13MP.

Update 2: Here is a shot of Nats MacBook Pro’s keyboard. It was shot at 13.6MP in macro mode using iso 1600. I am really impressed, keep in mind this is a P&S camera not a DSLR. The JPG is 4.38MB so its better if you right click and save as. [Picture 4.38MB]

Without going into a lot of detail but the W300 is a better camera in general. At least with the W300 I have buttons to press. The N1 i have is touch screen and I prefer using buttons instead of flipping through touch screen menus. Also the W300 has a brighter lens, closer macro capabilities, faster startup time and better battery life.

I actually think Canon and Sony make the best P&S’s but I really didnt like the 890. Visually alone I thought it looked ugly and cheap. The body is made from plastic, its also kind of bulky and according to reviews not a very fast camera.

Nice one, I always stayed away from Sony from the early days where they forced you to use their stupidly expensive memory sticks. Now the price of memory sticks has come down to acceptable levels this is no longer an issue.

I look forward to seeing the results

Congratulation mark on your new camera πŸ˜› i was really waiting for your decision, since i believe in your electronic choices … i will defiantly go after work to purchase it and i hope i will be getting for the same price πŸ˜‰

KD118 with a 1GB memory stick
KD120 with a 2GB memory stick
He was also giving me like a cheap leather pouch for it but I told him I didn’t need it. The store is called Digital World and their number is 2414274

Thank you so much & i will thank you again when i post my first feelings for it. i think i will go for the 2 GB since it’s worth it’s always preferred to have more free space in your camera’s memory stick.

I read some concerns ‘n want to share it with you guys:

1. Low zoom range (3x optical zoom : 35mm), whereas other manufacturers like Nikon and Fujifilm are dishing out compact shooters (FinePix F100fd) with 28mm wide-angle lens and a higher zoom range.

2. The movie-recording feature shoots clips at only 640 x 480 pixels, whereas Panasonic’s Lumix FX36 ;which are capable of shooting 720p (1,280 x 720-pixel)-quality video.

3. The weight ( with the scales at 187g with battery and memory media, it hardly classifies as featherweight). Measuring 94.3mm along the width and 26.8mm thick, the W300 may leave a bulge in your pocket, so ladies. take note. (Mark… pocket! does it ring a bell?)

I read about those concerns here is my take:

1) I spent a year shooting my miskan project with a 75mm lens (50mm x1.5) so 35mm now is more than wide enough for me. Also my N1 widest was 35mm and although a few times i wished i had a slightly wider lens it wasn’t an important factor for me when choosing a cam. The Ricoh for example had a 24mm lens but I wouldn’t have minded if it was also 35.

2) For shooting video I have my Sony miniDV cam. The videos I shoot with my camera are the ones that I will upload to youtube and 640×480 is more than enough for YouTube.

3) This you need to judge by yourself. I personally find the camera very small and any smaller I dont think I can hold it properly. I am wearing a tight diesel jeans today and the camera fit into my pockets very easily and snugly. Yes it leaves a small bulge but with tight jeans if you put a credit card into the pocket you will get a bulge lol

The images in the background are blurred and the text looks double
Might be due to the heat or a shaky hand, dunno
But I have seen images from the same camera and the results are really spectacular and the background normally comes out very sharp too

cajie: Shutter lag is nearly instant. I tried some shots at 1600 in a room with no day light and just neon which by itself is a terrible setup. shots were bright and looked great at 640×480 but when u view at 100% u can tell there was noise reduction so i now decreased the strength of the noise reduction and will try shooting again later. the funniest feature has to be the smile detector. how it works…

1) you need a friend and then turn on smile mode on camera
2) have them stand in front of the camera and press the shutter button all the way as if u r taking a shot
3) camera will focus but not take a shot, it will turn on the smile meter
4) the camera then scans the image to find the face it then starts detecting the smile
5) once your friend smiles the camera takes the shot

I hate to burst your bubble but it is 88KD on ebay with a leather case, a Tripod and a cleaning kit.

And if you do not care having it in a box NIB it is 76KD.

However, it is fun to pay some more and to have it NOW πŸ™‚

Mabrook anyway

UncleBenz: I hate to burst your bubble but it is 95KD ($359) on ebay with a leather case, a Tripod and a cleaning kit. Its the same price as amazon except they include junk for u on ebay, charge you big bucks for shipping and its generally a hassle to buy from ebay. Its cheaper to just get it from Amazon without the junk.

I have a tiny Sony Cyber shot and a Nikon D80. Now I need something in the midrange and I’m thinking about the Nikon P5100, but I think I’ll wait for the next iteration coming sometime this Christmas. P5100 seems to have concerns in low light situations.

I have a Canon IXUS 65 and was thinking of getting the Sony W300, anyone in the know with a quick comparison of those two?

Cheers

I am planning on getting a high-zoom camera from sony (DSC H-50).

Irrelevant question: do u know when the blackberry bold 9000 will be released in kuwait?

why did you use that much iso? point a lamp to it and take a second pic with low iso, you’re gonna love it even more, i think.

I just recommended it to a friend based on your review and the fact that my brother got the older w200 and he love it too.

What about x-cite(al-ghanim) and Eureka are they selling at the same prices? i want to get one..but im not too good at photography, and it looks really complicated! Should I get this one or something simpler like the T200?

Thanks Mark.
I have no idea about photography, that was just a lay man observation.
Btw, thanks for the enlightenment, now I now what is exif data (I misread it as exit data at first :P)

Just off the record, since you have / continue to review quite a lot of consumer goods, why don’t you start off a consumer goods review blog / site? q8consumer has a good ring to it.

UncleBenz the link you gave me is only camera without tripod, cleaning kit, leather case etc.. but even then I would rather pay a bit more and get it from amazon instead of ebay. Keep in mind with this ebay seller if you use paypal he will only ship to your paypal confirmed address which would be Kuwait.

Mark in general I agree with! I am the worse buyer.. I always buy things at a higher price cause I dont know how to wait! But I am sure for those who like to hunt prices, the Web is full of good deals.

Here is an even better deal from amazon (the site you told us about) the only problem is a slight damage in the BOX πŸ™‚

$315

By the way it is a good camera! Did you try it with moving objects? how is the stabilization? I

haven’t tried it with moving objects yet but i did try the stabilization, its my first camera that has such a thing and for someone who has shaky hands like me its really a great feature. I was talking pictures at 1/15 and they were coming out sharp as if i was shooting at 1/30 or 1/60

You must have this if you ever want to take pics when riding your bike with the group. I have the Canon SD850 and it has great stabilty got it just for biking.

Hi Mark,

Thanks for the prompt response

I like the Cannon SD 850 and the W300 Sony and I think both cams are just great; since you have both which one would you really recommend.

The cam is for my wife so its for someone who likes to take shoots from time to time.

Hey Mark,
i use to have a Sony 12.1, but sadly i lost it, anyways i was just asking if it is worth buying, because im a person who likes to just take it out and take a quick shot. the real question is, does it take fast and clear pictures.

Hi Mark

Thank you for your review. There aren’t many out there! I’ve just ordered my W300 on Amazon, and can’t wait for it to arrive. I take food photos for my blog, mostly in restaurants, and it sounds ideal for me (maybe more than I need, but who cares!). I’ve been using my Sony Ericsson K800i Cybershot all this time, but have decided it’s finally time to upgrade and take some better quality photos…

Bought this camera yesterday. 2 large dust particles in lens ruin every shot. Would be easy to touch up in Lightroom, but they are so big it just doenst look right. Right of of the box. I’ve had plenty of other point and shoots. Never had a problem. Must be a design flaw. I really want to like this camera. I guess I will exchange and try another.
Then as far as keeping it in my shirt pocket…would prob need to keep in a ziploc sandwich bag. Might as well stick with a DSLR if I want to look that geeky taking photos in public.
