Breakfast at Yellow Lemon

yellowlemon

Yellow Lemon is a new small breakfast place that opened up around two weeks ago in Salmiya near Sultan Center Shaab. It’s been awhile since a new breakfast place opened up and I’ve kinda started getting bored with my usual spots so I was pretty excited to check this place out.

When we arrived to the place it was empty except for one other table that was occupied. In total there are only five tables in the place, two large ones enough to fit four, and three small ones that fit two. The menu is divided into three main parts, omelettes, pancakes and more eggs which are different dishes made using eggs. I opted for the Turkey Muffin, a no carbs dish consisting of baked eggs wrapped in smoked turkey and filled with tomatoes and feta cheese while my friend went for their signature Lemon Pancakes. We also ordered a small bottle of water and orange juice for our drinks.

There wasn’t any music playing so it was a bit awkward having a conversation in such a small place since it felt like everyone could hear us. But, just as our food arrived, more people came in and filled the place up creating a much more cozier and comfortable atmosphere. My dish looked great and had a side of chopped watermelon. It was a very light carb free protein dish that might have been just a tad undercooked but was still fine since I prefer that to it being overcooked. My friend enjoyed the lemon pancakes as well so we were both pretty satisfied with our choices.

My biggest issue with the place had to do with the price of the water and orange juice. A small bottle of water costs KD1.000 while a teeny tiny glass of orange juice was for KD1.500. There is absolutely no reason why water should cost so much at a small hole in the wall and the same goes with the orange juice. The food was more reasonably priced with my Turkey Muffin costing KD3 while the Lemon Pancakes KD3.750. Nothing on the menu exceeded KD4.

The question on would I go back is a difficult one to answer. On the one hand my favorite hole in the wall breakfast place is The Early Bird and one of the best things there is the atmosphere of the place which this place lacks. Yellow Lemon feels like they want to be an upscale hole in the wall breakfast place targeting posh girls, and you know what, that might actually work. On the other hand I would only go back if I’m looking for a quiet private place, maybe for a morning business meeting.

Dear Mark,

I have noticed recently in kuwait especially in small coffe shops like this that prices are becoming ridiculously higher. It kind if reminds me of the Lebanese restaurant philosophy where ‘we jack up the prices as much as we want and you will still play’. Last week I went to this cafe in A to Z called cafe bazza and water was also 1 kd as you mentioned. More so I ordered yoghurt and cucumber salad which came literally in a small little ‘bzurat’ bowl. When I put my spoon in it, it made me sad because my spoon did not even reach half way in (a max of 3-4 spoonfuls). It was literally half a yogurt cup and a finely finely grated half cucumber at most for 1.250 kd..I was thinking to my self come on please you can’t be serious how much does Laban and cucumber cost why are you doing this? It is kind if frustrating really as I know kuwait for being generous and not super greedy and profit oriented. However I understand in some cases it’s the quality of the food, service and so on. But if your going to serve easy to make plates with reasonably cheap products so high, at least get me a portion that feeds more than an infant baby. It’s really a shame how high the prices are getting and te portions get smaller, such a shame I’m not going back to that cafe, and I think such places should be boycotted in order to keep the Kuwaiti food standard as generous as it is.

Btw from what I saw cafe bazza, it is far from an upscale restaurant, and it’s a small cafe. With alright service and alright food, also a very generic design. If on a Kuwaiti restaurant scale I don’t think it makes the cut as ‘up scale’.

If you don’t agree with a place’s price don’t go there, that’s how it’s always been. There are lots of places I think are overpriced but I don’t ask them to lower the prices, I just go somewhere else.

Yeah that’s exactly what I said aaa. But I’m just feeling this trend catching on where people think it’s classy to pay more for small amounts of food. I think it’s ridiculous unless your eating in some super classy place where the quality of the food is noticeably different and is made with quality products not yoghurt and cucumber like I mentioned above. This is how it starts next thing you know everything will be just as expensive and small shops and what are now cheap corner stores will start charging I.e. 5 kd for what is now maybe a 1kd sandwich. Inflation is catching on to kuwait. For those who can afford to pay that everyday gd for you, but in my opinion your wasting your hard earned money.

I am wondering What is the total number of restaurants in Kuwait?!!!! I see every week a new restaurant/cafe opens up!

Mark, by the way there will be a new burguer franchise in town 😉 Steak ‘n Shake is coming all the way from Houston, TX

An excellent question Firas, I was wandering the same thing. Would anyone be able to give an accurate estimate of how many restaurants, food businesses, food delivery services, food operated home businesses there are in Kuwait all together. Im talking about every single one. (that includes every fast food franchise outlet store in every district/area). Then we can divide the total number of restaurants by the population of the country. My guess – i say 9,000 food related businesses. Lets here your number!

Can u guys blame it on the rent instead? The rent in kuwait is very high and this place looks like there has been effort in it unlike early bird which is a cheap place

Hey mark! Go try Dough, i thought of you when I was there. New breakfast spot in Mangaf facing the sea, amazing food + they serve poutines all the way from Canada 😍Their instagram @mydough
