The Volkswagen Golf GTI

Last week after posting my review on the Lexus IS 350 I got a phone call from VW regarding the Golf since I had left a comment about how they don’t want me to drive their cars. Awhile back I had sent them a couple of emails requesting to test drive the car but no one had ever gotten back to me. Actually one person did the first time I sent an email and they told me they didn’t have the car available for a test drive, but they’d call me back once they did. The second email just never got through due it turns out to a technical glitch from their side. The marketing manager was fairly apologetic about that and told me they had a Golf GTI ready and that I could pass by and pick it up anytime I wanted to. So an hour later I was leaving the VW dealership in a hot red hatch for the weekend.

I have a personal connection with the Golf. My granddad in Lebanon had the original Golf MKI which my family used to use during our summer holidays. It was a great car, compact and really reliable. The car I believe was a 1977 model but stayed in the family up until the late 90s. When I moved to Lebanon for university my first car was also a Golf, the MKIII. It was the car I learned to drive on and in the two years I had it, I managed to get 14 flat tires (stupid potholes) and 7 accidents. Sounds bad but it’s because of the Golf I’m a much better driver today. The car then moved on to my sister who continued the tradition of carelessly driving into giant potholes as well as hitting other cars. Sadly though, she still sucks at driving today. The Golf took a lot of abuse before we finally sold it. I still miss the car and wish I still had it but it’s probably in a better place now. Since then the Golf has gone through four facelifts and the current model is the Golf MKVII.

So yeah I love Golfs and I was in love with the current model even before driving it. And now after spending the weekend with the car I’m seriously contemplating getting one. I tend to do this with every car I test drive which isn’t healthy obviously, I even did it with the Ferrari 458 Spider and the McLaren. You can just imagine the conversation I had in my head trying to convince myself how it’s possible the 458 could replace my FJ Cruiser as my daily driver. Most of the time though the itch wears off a few days later and I start looking for another car to test drive. This time, I’m not sure if the feeling is going to go away.

The new Golf GTI is just a blast to drive. The seating position is fantastic, the handling is ridiculous and it just takes a few minutes to feel super confident driving it. I was also driving like a douche, cutting people off and trying to squeeze between cars. Its how I used to drive my own Golf and I guess I was just reliving the old days. Because of the extremely accurate handling, Golfs are known to be great for “inbetweens” which is the art of trying to squeeze yourself between two cars by creating a new lane between them. Luckily, no sideview mirrors were lost in the making of this review. Seriously though the car is so much fun to drive and the more powerful Golf R is supposed to be even more fun which is insane.

One thing that surprised the hell out of me was the car’s AC. I wouldn’t usually mention the AC in a review but this past weekend the weather was really hot and the car spent a lot of time parked in the sun yet the AC was so powerful it would give Toyota a run for their money. On the other hand I found the sound system disappointing with really boomy bass, a small claustrophobic screen and no navigation. For those of you who’re interested in the back seats, there’s pretty good legroom and like all Golf’s the rear seats fold down turning the already large trunk into an IKEA friendly one.

There are two Golf’s available to purchase in Kuwait, the Golf GTI and the Golf R (they don’t get standard non GTI or R Golfs). The Golf GTI in Kuwait comes fully loaded with features such as the performance package, auto parking, rearview camera and sunroof and costs KD10,600. If I was getting the GTI I would custom order it (which is possible) and not have the auto parking option (because I can park myself) and instead get the upgraded sound system with navigation. The Golf R is the most powerful version of the Golf with more horsepower than the GTI, an all wheel drive system, upgraded sound system with navigation and leather seats. But the Golf R also costs KD14,800.

I’m having a real hard time trying to decide if I’d be willing to swap my FJ for the Golf. I’ve already been researching Golf bike mounts and roof bars that can hold wakeboards. But, I’ve also kinda gotten used to being able to drive over anything and on anything so thats going to be something hard to let go of. If you’re interested in test driving the Golf or if you’re looking for more information, then check out the dealers website [Here]

I too have loved the Golf through the years. On a serious note though, why are so many new owners selling the current gen with such few miles?

Exactly, need to check with an owner who will be honest to tell why exactly they are parting with the car.

A brand new VW is covered by 3 yrs maintenance (45K kms) and 5 yrs manufacturers warranty.

The GTI’s listed for sale are 2014 with under 15k km.

After posting this review a friend contacted me and told me he had a GTI and sold it for two reasons. One he was speeding a lot in it and two his AC had an issue. Whenever he turned the AC he would get a rotten smell and the dealer couldn’t fix it.

Ah that explains it! The dealer not being able to resolve an issue with a brand new car is not a good sign.

For those who are interested, the GTI can be optioned (3~4 months wait!) with upgraded Dynaudio speakers for Kd250 or so.. and Dynamic chassis control “DCC” which allows you to select 3 defferent levels of suspension damping: comfort-normal-stiff (included with the R golf) – also an option for KD350 extra
I’m getting mine with those options by mid august or so..

ha! looks like calling out vw helped after all!

on another note, really enjoyed your pictures for this review, you’ve taken a slightly different stylistic approach to it this time around. i especially like that first one.

holy fuck, that before is insane. i was actually quite curious where you took that but the before picture looks so much more familiar now lol. makes me wonder, did you take the before shot already knowing how you wanted the finished product to look? or did you just decide to take a more spontaneous approach with no real vision as such?

When I took the shot I had a general idea on how I wanted the shot to look like. I figured I would do minor retouching on it but when I got home I realized it needed more work than I had originally anticipated.

Agree. I especially liked the clouds and the exceptionally green grass.

Adobe Photoshop CS FTW.

But seriously, good work on the shoot Mark.

I really admire and like the Golf. It’s a great choice because it’s small but fits adults in the back, fun to drive and the hatchback gives you great trunk space, all at a reasonable price.

Personally for me, every time I consider a Golf GTI I always end up looking at the Subaru WRX / STI and thinking it’s better. It’s quicker (GTI 0-60 5.9s, WRX 0-60 5.1s, STI 4.7s), much more reliable (based on statistics) and cheaper to own and run. The Subaru’s interior isn’t as nice, and you lose the hatch, but the driving dynamics are superior thanks to the AWD and it’s quicker. If you’re more into the driving the Subaru is a better choice, but the Golf is really nice on the inside and it’s a great all around car if you know what I mean.

well…VW is an average brand with a very good marketing.
but since you got a car for test drive, allow me to say that I would expect some technical details too…engine is Euro5 or Euro6…CO2 emissions? fuel consumption?

for the mid-class sport cars (and please lets be fair…golf GTI is not a Ferrari or a lambo)the best option for Segment C sport car is Renault Sport (Megane RS or CLIO) ….its not an “accident” that Renault has joined F1…is it?

Last but not least, comparing Gold with the FJ is … just cannot…how are you comparing a Segment C car with an Segment SUV car…totally different target group…totally different driver mentality.
that my opinion….

Well majority of my readers are not car fanatics and would fall asleep if I started going into details on the car specs. Plus there are a ton of reviews online discussing the technical aspects of the car. Fuel consumption? CO2 emissions? Is that really anything that people care about in Kuwait?

Regarding comparing it to the FJ, I think you misunderstood my comments. Clearly I can tell one is an SUV and the other is a hatchback. My comments were based on the question if I would swap my car for a Golf and my car just happens to be an SUV.

In any case thanks for your opinion.

One question Mark…

Why do you need navigation in Kuwait? O.o First time when I moved to Kuwait I was using my Nokia for navigation heavily, but after 6 months I stop using it.

Even my Kuwaiti friend using it and I never understand why, it’s not like he need it… it’s just on every time and he never looking at it. He admits he’s never using it, but he just likes when it’s on and he pay additional ~300kd for it 😀

I use navigation the whole time but I use google maps. The reason I was suggesting getting the navigation option in the GTI is because it has a larger screen so its less cramped

Hey Mark! Love the review about the Mark 7! I own a MK7 GTI and I love it so much that I created a Club and got sponsored by VW Kuwait. The car is great in every way but I agree with your friend it has a slight problem with the AC that it smells bad for first couple of months. Most people are selling the GTI because it has Turbo problems when it comes to tuning the car. Almost everyone who buys this car wants or thinks about tuning it. The Turbo charger on the GTI is defected from the Factory. Many people tuned their GTI and ended up with a blown turbo which got replaced by the warranty, people just got bored of the whole process, started selling their cars and thats the whole story. Driving it just as it is (Stock), the car is almost perfect and a great daily driver.

I ordered a full option few years back with
Sunroof
Black leather interior and Black Exterior
Navigation
Electric seat
Dynaudio speakers
Park assist
Zenon light
10.400KD i think it was

Love it even more 3 years later. You can quickly get out of “situation” and it is so much fun to drive. Never had a problem with it, at all. Plus the service center is amazing. Ali the manager is an angle.
Go for it, I say. You can easily fit a bike rack on the back, get it from Extreme and no issue for the roof rack either. I fitted 4 dining chair from The One in that car ones, no problem.
Gunther is my baby.

I’d rather have a beetle sport its just soo classic :3. Please do a test drive on the Beetle pleeeaaassse
